Before the pandemic, Simon Cowell was the epitome of a workaholic, known for working into the early hours. But as he prepares for the live semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent, the 62-year-old is a changed man, looking fitter and more refreshed. Sitting on a sofa in his London home, Simon insists life is no longer all about work and says he now puts son Eric and fiancee Lauren first. Though he would later say he’d happily take on an X Factor reboot, he tells me: “I do think I have got the work/life balance right, particularly with Eric because he’s eight now. “The only good thing about the coronavirus was that during the lockdown we spent a lot of time together – and I love his company. “Once we came out of lockdown, I had to make a decision, which was do I go back to what I was doing before? Or do I do a little bit less and I’m able to spend more time with him? That’s what I decided to do. Simon is focusing on his family ( Image: PA) He has been getting … [Read more...] about Simon Cowell reveals why he cut back on work and if there will be X Factor revival

Google Maps mystery: The unstable volcanic island used for nuclear tests in the 1950s
Remote places all over the world can be explored at a click thanks to Google Maps. The website allows users to go wherever they like and see more of the planet from the comfort of their own home. But one island off the coast of Alaska is hidden on Google Maps and has a dark history of nuclear testing. Amchitka is a volcanic and unstable island around 116 square miles in size. It has been part of the United States since Alaska was bought from Russia back in 1867. In the Second World War, the island was used by US forces as an airfield and marked as a possible target for Japanese troops. Users who search for the island will find more than half of its surface blurred from view. Sen. Edmund S. Muskie, right, talks with the Rev. Joseph V. Brownsville Bishop: ‘Don’t Tell Me that Guns Aren’t the Problem’
Brownsville Bishop Daniel Flores said this week that the real problem behind mass shootings is the availability of guns, which are “easier to obtain than aspirin.” “Don’t tell me that guns aren’t the problem, people are. I’m sick of hearing it,” Bishop Flores posted on his Twitter account Wednesday. “The darkness first takes our children who then kill our children, using the guns that are easier to obtain than aspirin,” added the bishop, who is chairman of the U.S. bishops’ committee on doctrine. “We sacralize death’s instruments and then are surprised that death uses them.” Asked to explain what he meant by the tweet, Bishop Flores told the Pillar Catholic said that “any attempt to control weapons that can cause grave damage — some of which moves have been enacted into law and others which have been resisted — is countered with a description that [gun ownership] is basically an individual’s sacred right, that no matter what the cost, it must be preserved.” “To say … [Read more...] about Brownsville Bishop: ‘Don’t Tell Me that Guns Aren’t the Problem’
Knotty supply chains deepen global chip shortage
If the pandemic had a partner in crime, it must be the global chip shortage. The duo has hit established economic systems world-wide, and made several organisations scale back production and rework their manufacturing and supply chain processes. Toyota Corporation on Tuesday apologised to its suppliers and customers a third time in less than two months for delaying making new vehicles and changing production plans for the June ending quarter. On March 17, the Japanese automaker said it is pressing the brakes on production targets to rework a plan that will not max out factory capacity, push employees to their limits, and make do through overtime work. A month later, the Japanese automaker cut its global production target for the period between April and June by 1,00,000 to 7,50,000 vehicles in May. And then again, on May 24, it said ,“Due to the impact of semiconductor shortages, we have adjusted our production plan by tens of thousands of units globally from the number provided to … [Read more...] about Knotty supply chains deepen global chip shortage
To father with love
“My father wanted me to be a curator of an art gallery. This show is my small tribute to him,” says Anupriya Bharath, daughter of renowned photojournalist and artist Bharath Bhushan, who passed away due to cancer in January this year. An exhibition and sale of 135 of his acrylic works is currently on at the foyer of Ravindra Bharathi in Hyderabad Simple strokes and vibrant colours on canvas depict various Telangana-centric themes including its people, the State festivals of Bonalu and Bathukamma, birds, animals, gods and portraits. Bharath, whose photographs also highlighted Telangana’s art, culture and people, began to paint around a decade ago. “He probably created around 10,000 works in the last 10 years,” says Anupriya, a management professional working with Accenture. ‘Ganesha’ by Bharath Bhushan | Photo Credit: Special arrangement Even while living with multiple health issues, Bharath’s source of comfort was his art and photography. “His day used to begin at 4 am and … [Read more...] about To father with love

Watch: Homeless North Carolina Veteran Gifted Home from Local Charity
A homeless veteran living in North Carolina has received the keys to a Winston-Salem home thanks to a local nonprofit that provides veterans with permanent housing solutions. “First thing I said was thank you Jesus and thank you God for the people who allow me to even come in the house,” veteran Dworn Ricks told WXII. “That was the greatest thing, to know that I have somewhere to go.” Ricks – who served his country for 14 years, most of them in the National Guard – has lived “in and out of his car” over the past couple of years, WXII reported. “ In 2021, 19,750 veterans were experiencing sheltered homelessness,” which accounts for “11 out of every 10,000 veterans in the country,” per the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Thankfully for Ricks, Housing 4 Our Heroes was able to step in and provide the North Carolina veteran with a home. “ Housing 4 Our Heroes is a permanent housing project” by the North Carolina-based nonprofit organization … [Read more...] about Watch: Homeless North Carolina Veteran Gifted Home from Local Charity
Ukraine fears repeat of Mariupol horrors elsewhere in Donbas
KRAMATORSK, Ukraine — Moscow-backed separatists pounded eastern Ukraine’s industrial Donbas region Friday, claiming the capture of a railway hub as concerns grew that besieged cities in the region would undergo the same horrors experienced by the people of Mariupol in the weeks leading up to the port’s capture. Ukrainian officials renewed their appeals for more sophisticated Western-supplied weaponry. Without it, they said, Ukrainian forces wouldn’t be able to stop Russia’s offensive. The fighting Friday focused on two key cities: Sievierodonetsk and nearby Lysychansk. They are the last areas under Ukrainian control in Luhansk, one of two provinces that make up the Donbas and where Russia-backed separatists have already controlled some territory for eight years. Authorities say 1,500 people in Sievierodonetsk have already died since the war’s start scarcely more than three months ago. “Massive artillery shelling does not stop, day and night,” Sievierodonetsk Mayor Oleksandr … [Read more...] about Ukraine fears repeat of Mariupol horrors elsewhere in Donbas

The Asus Zenbook 14 Flip OLED laptop recently debuted in India, and it comes with a 360-degree “ergo-lift” design. It essentially means that the keyboard gets slightly tilted in the clamshell form for a better typing experience, but users can also use the notebook as a tablet, thanks to the screen’s 360-degree rotation capability.
