Somewhere in a landfill in Wales, there is a hard drive which, even after this week, contains a trove of bitcoins with a value of more than £100m. But that, surely, is nothing compared with the sacred artefact that we now know must exist somewhere – most likely in some kind of rubbish dump in the vicinity of Alderley Edge. I speak of the document that, before today, we did not know existed. It is a handwritten note, fresh from the pen of its author, Coleen Rooney . It contains the 13 seismic sentences, each one note-perfect, beat-perfect, and magisterial in its economy, that lead to the four words and nine dot-dot-dots that shook the world: “It’s ……… Rebekah Vardy’s account.” On her second day of cross-examination, Rooney revealed that she had first written the post out by hand, as she likes to do, before typing it out on WhatsApp and sending it to her brother to post on her Instagram while she did the same on Twitter. The note, she said, has now been lost. And even … [Read more...] about Day five of Wagatha Christie – and the dark heart of the case has been laid bare

Entrepreneur beats disability, sizzles with food stall at Navi Mumbai mall
At first glance, ‘Aditi’s Corner’ in Bhoomi Mall, CBD Belapur, looks like any other eatery: a couple of chairs and tables neatly laid out; packets of chips hanging on one side; microwave atop a clean marble platform and a glass shelf displaying pastries and cupcakes. However, there is something unique about this stall. Aditi Verma, 22, who runs the eatery, has Down Syndrome, but it is barely evident, as she meticulously takes down lunch orders, greeting every customer with an endearing smile. “I always loved cooking, and would surprise my mom with dishes I picked up from YouTube videos,” she says. Her parents and brother wanted to nurture this passion — besides making her self-reliant — and gifted her with the eatery on New Year’s Day last year. Within the third month itself, Ms. Verma had achieved break even. For her parents, it was heartening to see the distance Ms. Verma has covered. They were devastated when she was born with Down Syndrome. At the age of two-and-a-half, she was … [Read more...] about Entrepreneur beats disability, sizzles with food stall at Navi Mumbai mall

Depp v Heard: Actress carried a make-up kit ‘at all times’ to cover bruises, court told
Photographs of Amber Heard with red marks, bruises and swelling on her face - the result, she alleges, of her and Johnny Depp's final fight - have been shown in court. It came as Heard told jurors of the "torture" of re-living "the most intimate, embarrassing, deeply humiliating and personal things" she has ever gone through. On Monday, she concluded giving her evidence, with a third day centred on the final months of her marriage to Depp . The trial is now in its fifth week, and jurors have seen multiple photos of Heard throughout, that purport to document the abuse she said she received during their relationship. Several of the photos shown on Monday had not previously been seen by the jury and showed redness and swelling much more clearly than earlier photos. Advertisement But in cross examination, Depp's lawyer, Camille Vasquez took issue with the claims and asked why no photographs were produced of one particular moment Heard said Depp hit … [Read more...] about Depp v Heard: Actress carried a make-up kit ‘at all times’ to cover bruises, court told
This is the Republican Senator determined to bury Madison Cawthorn
Thom Tillis is not someone who particularly riles up voters on either side of the aisle. When the North Carolina Senator spoke at a Republican rally in Fayetteville 2019, he was met with boos for being insufficiently conservative. Conversely, while his 2014 race against incumbent Democratic Senator Kay Hagan was the most expensive race in history at the time, his Democratic opponent Cal Cunningham raised far less than Amy McGrath or Jamie Harrison in their 2020 suicide missions against Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham. This, despite the fact that by all usual metrics Cunningham had a better chance of beating Tillis (whether Cunningham’s farcical sex scandal cost him the race is a question for debate). Nevertheless, Tillis squeaked out a victory both times, and is now set to become North Carolina’s senior Senator when Richard Burr retires at the end of this year. These days, it appears Tillis is mostly known for using his entire operation to end the career … [Read more...] about This is the Republican Senator determined to bury Madison Cawthorn
Donald Trump’s enemies flock to Brian Kemp in bid to thwart MAGA surge
Former President George W. Bush is reported to be attending a fundraiser in support of Georgia governor Brian Kemp in another example of recent and longtime enemies of Donald Trump publicly rallying against the MAGA president's endorsed candidate, David Perdue . Bush is scheduled to appear at a Texas fundraiser on Monday for Kemp at the home of real estate developer Harlan Crow, according to Politico. It was previously confirmed that former Vice President Mike Pence , whose relationship with Trump fell apart after the 2021 U.S. Capitol riot, would be supporting Kemp as the Republican candidate during a rally held one day before the May 24 primary. Charles Bullock, a professor of political science at the University of Georgia, said that with Kemp being "target number one" for Trump, Republicans who do not support the former president and his vision have seen that "the biggest blow they could deliver to begin freeing the GOP of Trumpism" would be to beat his candidate … [Read more...] about Donald Trump’s enemies flock to Brian Kemp in bid to thwart MAGA surge
New plan to help first-time buyers get cheaper mortgages unveiled – how it works
First-time buyers could be offered cheaper mortgages if they take out an insurance policy, under new plans to help get people with small deposits on the housing ladder faster. The insurance policy would protect banks if they defaulted and would therefore allow them to offer the buyer lower mortgage rates. Michael Gove , the housing secretary, is examining the Canada-style plans to make loans more available for those without big savings,. He raised concerns that restrictive mortgage financing is shutting a generation out of owning their own homes. Gove said that by looking at how other countries have allowed more families to get loans with small deposits , he will "fix our dysfunctional housing market". Banks are less likely to lend to people with small deposits because they are considered risky and are more at risk of defaulting. Gove said that "we need to make access to finance for ownership easier" for young people, pointing out that just a quarter of those aged 25 to … [Read more...] about New plan to help first-time buyers get cheaper mortgages unveiled – how it works

The disappearing hotel: Where has all the service – and the butter – gone?
After a full two years of idling rooms, dwindling guests, and shrinking services, hotels across Asia are turning on the fairy lights once again. Returning guests gratefully collapsing at the altar of this renewed five-star devotion would do well to examine the miracles of 2022 with a healthily jaundiced eye. As with the nouvelle cuisine trap, the art of the restart revolves around the promise rather than any proffered tangibles. That one buttered pea rolling around your expensive bone china plate in an orgy of solitary ecstasy and the boast of a brand marquee that excites smartphone shutters, is considered enough to silence any dissenting murmurs. But we do recall that 500-thread count linen in finest Egyptian cotton, the Bose surround sound, the Carrara marble that moans, “prego” every time you step on it with calloused feet, and the butler service (to turn on your taps): “I know naathing... I’m from Barthelona.” Well, perhaps we might do the flamenco as someone explains to me … [Read more...] about The disappearing hotel: Where has all the service – and the butter – gone?
