Planned Parenthood issued a statement condemning the Supreme Court 's ruling that overturns Roe v. Wade , the decision that protected a woman's right to seek an abortion. "The Supreme Court just overturned Roe v. Wade , ending our constitutional right to abortion. We know you may be feeling a lot of things right now — hurt, anger, confusion. Whatever you feel is OK. We're here with you — and we'll never stop fighting for you," the organization, which provides sexual and reproductive health care across the U.S., wrote. In another statement provided to Newsweek, Alexis McGill Johnson, the president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said that with the decision, the Supreme Court "has now officially given politicians permission to control what we do with our bodies, deciding that we can no longer be trusted to determine the course for our own lives." "Due to centuries of racism and systemic discrimination, we already know who will feel the consequences of this horrific … [Read more...] about Planned Parenthood issues statement after Roe V. A ‘Lone-Wolf’ Shooter Has an Online Pack
Wolves are not a particularly special species. They are not as menacing nor as powerful as mountain lions. They are not as big as many other predators, nor as strong, nor terribly wise, nor do they have sophisticated tools or genetic dispositions that make them individually dangerous in the animal kingdom. Their ability to capture prey worthier than themselves results from collaboration—from the pack. Once prey is targeted, the pack first disperses, then surrounds the victim—some wolves from the front, others from the back. The wolf pack’s defining feared feature is that it does not work alone. The lone wolf, in the animal kingdom, is not powerful; it is weak. The wolf, acting alone, is not something to fear. Lone wolves do not massacre, because they can’t. Eighteen-year-old Payton S. Gendron allegedly went hunting yesterday at a supermarket after traveling more than 200 miles from his home. Police say he was heavily armed, wearing protective military-style gear, and proceeded … [Read more...] about A ‘Lone-Wolf’ Shooter Has an Online Pack
High oil and gas costs may be forever, top banker warns
Former Bank of Canada Governor Stephen Poloz has warned that Canadians may need to adjust to permanently higher oil and gas prices. During an interview this week on CBC News Network's Power & Politics , Poloz argued the inflation rate in Canada may fall but oil and gas prices may remain high . "The main thing is all this is is a price increase. If oil prices and energy costs stay roughly where they are today then, of course, over the next 12 months what we would get is a gradual unwinding of that effect in the inflation rate," Poloz said. "That is really important for people to bear in mind. The fact is most of it really is nothing we can control and it will be transitory." Despite his claim that inflation in Canada would decrease, he explained why this may not be true for gas and oil. "We might have to pay more for oil and gas forever," Poloz said, according to the CBC report. "And if that's the case, that's not inflation. It's a higher price that we'll have to pay … [Read more...] about High oil and gas costs may be forever, top banker warns

How Roe v. Wade ruling changed from leaked draft
The U.S. Supreme Court has overturned the landmark 1973 case Roe v. Wade which had found that a woman's right to abortion was protected under the 14th Amendment of the Constitution. The Court issued its opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization on Friday and a majority of the justices officially overturned the precedent set down by their predecessors almost 50 years ago. Associate Justice Samuel Alito authored the majority opinion and that opinion was joined by Associate Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch , Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett . Chief Justice John Roberts wrote a concurring opinion as did Thomas and Kavanaugh. The justices' decision has been the subject of fraught speculation for months. That speculation intensified on May 2 when Politico published a leaked draft majority opinion authored by Alito that showed a majority of the Court had decided to overturn Roe and the 1992 case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which upheld … [Read more...] about How Roe v. Wade ruling changed from leaked draft
Where is abortion legal? In red states, women navigate a chaotic abortion landscape
ATLANTA — The impact was immediate: the moment the U.S. Supreme Court struck down Roe vs. Wade , Robin Marty, the operations director of the West Alabama Women’s Center in Tuscaloosa, told nurses, desk staff and a doctor on Friday they could no longer provide abortions. “I can’t believe they f—ing did it,” she said via phone. “You have to stop now!” Just as Roe was a landmark case for women’s rights in 1973, its reversal Friday is a resounding, if expected, ruling that will again reshape abortion in this volatile and divided nation. It left millions of women in conservative states wondering what their options are. Marty’s clinic staff had to tell more than 20 patients in their waiting room that they could continue their ultrasounds and counseling, but could not have their abortions. Then they began calling up about 100 patients, one by one, to cancel appointments and refer them to a clinic about 200 miles away in Atlanta, where the procedure is still legal. But the Atlanta … [Read more...] about Where is abortion legal? In red states, women navigate a chaotic abortion landscape
