Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson, while playing in the house that Ruth built, was living in a house of horrors, according to a lawsuit filed Friday. Donaldson, in a nine-page complaint filed in Connecticut Federal Court, alleges the $55,000-a-month Connecticut rental property where he relocated before Opening Day with his pregnant partner and their 17-month-old daughter was “unfit and uninhabitable for his family.” The residence suffered from a widespread mold problem, an unusable pool, an infestation of ants and squirrels, nonworking showers, water damage to the bathrooms and faulty electrical wiring, the lawsuit claimed. The squirrels also found a home in one of the house’s bedroom ceilings, according to Donaldson’s filing. The sprawling five-bedroom residence sits on 4.5 acres, its furnishings a mix of “high-end European elegance and modern Art Deco,” according to a listing for the property. The master suite comes with a balcony, while the 4,400-square foot residence … [Read more...] about Yankee Josh Donaldson sues Greenwich landlord over lease for ‘moldy’ mansion

Yankees fall, 3-1, to ageless wonder Justin Verlander and Astros
Playing in front of a sellout crowd at Yankee Stadium that could best be described as feral, the Yankees and Astros were locked in a staring contest for five innings. The Astros finally broke through in the sixth, thanks to a three-run, bat-flipping homer by Kyle Tucker. At just 25 years old, nestled in the Houston batting order after mainstays Jose Altuve, Michael Brantley and Alex Bregman, one slot behind breakout sensation Yordan Alvarez, Tucker is often the overlooked man in this monstrous lineup. After making a spring-loaded jumping catch at the wall on Thursday and pumping this critical home run on Friday, Tucker is making sure Yankee fans will remember his name. They already knew Justin Verlander, who had made 22 career regular season starts against the Yankees entering Friday. The 23rd was spectacular, as the ageless wonder threw seven innings of four-hit, one-run ball. Luis Severino kept pace with Verlander through the first five innings but cracked in the sixth when … [Read more...] about Yankees fall, 3-1, to ageless wonder Justin Verlander and Astros
Astros throw combined no-hitter to hand mighty Yankees second-straight loss, 3-0
The 2022 Yankees, a galactic force, were brought back to this planet on Saturday. They didn’t just lose, they got no-hit, as Astros’ pitchers Cristian Javier, Hector Neris and Ryan Pressly turned in a historic performance, leading Houston to a 3-0 win in front of a stunned Yankee Stadium crowd. This is the 14th no-hitter in Astros’ history and third time they’ve tag teamed one. It’s also the Astros’ second combined no-hitter at Yankee Stadium, joining a six-man effort on June 11, 2003. That day in 2003 was the last time the Yankees had been on the wrong end of a no-hitter. Houston’s three pitchers allowed four base runners. Javier walked a guy, Neris walked two, and third baseman Alex Bregman committed a throwing error. They teamed up for 15 strikeouts, picking on Giancarlo Stanton for three of them. The pitcher’s duel between Javier and Gerrit Cole went to Houston’s Javier, who threw seven no-hit, no-run innings with 13 strikeouts but was lifted after 115 pitches. Reliever … [Read more...] about Astros throw combined no-hitter to hand mighty Yankees second-straight loss, 3-0
Sears pitches major league-best Yankees past lowly A’s 2-1
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 35 NEW YORK (AP) — Last week, JP Sears was pitching before 4,209 fans at Toledo. Now he was getting a standing ovation from a screaming crowd of 38,051 at Yankee Stadium. “That was awesome. That's something that I really appreciate,” the 26-year-old left-hander said Tuesday night after stretching his scoreless streak to 12 2/3 innings and pitching the big league-leading Yankees over the worst-in-majors Oakland Athletics 2-1. “Watching a lot of baseball growing up, it was fun to watch from that side of the TV, so it was fun to be on that side of it tonight.” Wearing No. 92, the highest jersey number in Yankees history for a starting pitcher, Sears (3-0) made his second spot start and limited the … [Read more...] about Sears pitches major league-best Yankees past lowly A’s 2-1
Yankees struggles against Astros continue in 2-1 loss
The past week hasn’t been good to the idea that the Yankees are an unbeatable machine, one that’s destined for a long-awaited return to the mountaintop. Thursday’s 2-1 loss to the Astros is the Yankees’ third in their five games against Houston this week. The two wins both came on walk-offs in which they were losing in the eighth inning, too. If not for those two late-inning comebacks (or, if you prefer the blame game, meltdowns from the Astros’ bullpen), we’d be talking about a Yankees team that could set the franchise record for wins without ever beating the team most likely to block their path to the World Series. It’s the Astros’ starting pitching that has specifically doomed the Yankees. The most runs the Yankees have scored against a Houston starting pitcher is three, which came off Framber Valdez in the first game of the two teams’ recent meetings. On Thursday, it was Luis Garcia, who did not have an economical night but did have an effective one. Garcia needed 101 pitches … [Read more...] about Yankees struggles against Astros continue in 2-1 loss
MLB roundup: Alex Bregman’s double leads Astros past Yankees
Alex Bregman hit a two-run double early and the Houston Astros held on for a 2-1 win over the visiting New York Yankees on Thursday night. Thursday’s game completes a stretch for the Astros of nine games against New York teams. Houston went 3-2 against the majors-leading Yankees and swept four games with the Mets, who had the second-best record before being overtaken by the Astros. The Yankees were in town for just one game to make up part of a series scrapped because of the lockout. They’ll complete the series with a doubleheader July 21. Houston starter Luis Garcia (6-5) allowed three hits and one run with six strikeouts in 5 ⅓ innings for his third straight win. Ryan Pressly struck out two in a scoreless ninth for his 17th save. Jake Meyers doubled with no outs in the third before Aledmys Diaz walked with two outs. Kyle Tucker walked before Bregman’s double put Houston up 2-0. The Astros had a chance to pad the lead, but the inning ended after a malfunction of New York … [Read more...] about MLB roundup: Alex Bregman’s double leads Astros past Yankees
Gerrit Cole’s solid start, Matt Carpenter’s 2 homers lead Yankees to 13-4 rout over Guardians
CLEVELAND — The Yankees don’t let losses linger. After falling to the Astros on Thursday — and a rainout Friday — the Bombers simply got back to business. Gerrit Cole threw six solid innings, Matt Carpenter homered twice and the Yankees clobbered the Guardians 13-4 at Progressive Field Saturday in the first game of a day-night split doubleheader. The Yankees improved to 16-5 in games following a loss this season. Through 78 games, the Yankees have tied the second-best start to the season in the majors over the last 93 years. They tied the 2001 Mariners, who lost the American League Championship Series that season, and are one game off the pace of the 1998 Yankees, who won the World Series that year. They are now 18-5 against teams from the American League Central and 4-0 against the Guardians, who had a two-game winning streak snapped. Cole allowed two runs on three hits. He walked three and struck out six. He gave up two home runs. He has allowed 14 this season and only allowed … [Read more...] about Gerrit Cole’s solid start, Matt Carpenter’s 2 homers lead Yankees to 13-4 rout over Guardians

Bob Raissman: Draymond Green and the Warriors helping turn the NBA into reality TV
For Golden State, capturing the NBA title was almost as important as settling media feuds, social media scores, or whatever you want to call them. It wasn’t long after the Warriors won the title that Steph Curry was behind a microphone sticking it to (without naming him) ESPN NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins. In August, Perkins predicted the sharpshooter would not win another ring in the next four years. And along the celebratory parade route, the self-anointed “new media” guru Draymond Green found his chance to get even. He was not as diplomatic as Curry. “If they ever doubted — this is live TV, right — bleep ‘em,” Green said. More Green: “I warned y’all, so I’m just going to continue to destroy people on Twitter, as I have been, and Instagram stories.” Such is life in the NBA, where responding to Tweets, making Instagram deposits, amplifies the art of trash talking. Cats like Green, Curry, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Durant and a whole lot of other guys are more media personalities … [Read more...] about Bob Raissman: Draymond Green and the Warriors helping turn the NBA into reality TV
