Chinese officials told the Wall Street Journal that they are making plans for president Xi Jinping to visit southeast Asia and meet his American counterpart Joe Biden in November. If Xi Jinping attends the G20 leadership summit, which will be held in Indonesia’s Bali, it would mark the first time in the last two years that the Chinese president will be on an international trip. Xi did not travel outside China due to the Covid-19 pandemic. This is also the first time both leaders will be meeting in-person after Biden’s inauguration. The preparations for the visit indicates that Xi is confident that he will smoothly transition into his third term as Chinese president and Communist Party chief at the twice-a-decade congress set to take place later this year. He is expected to conclude the party congress first, following which he will attend the G20 leadership summit in Indonesia between November 15 and November 16. Xi will attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Summit … [Read more...] about Joe Biden and Xi Jinping Could Hold First In-Person Meeting this November: Report

Hope India Reiterate Its Support for One-China Policy, Says Envoy Amid Taiwan Tensions
China on Saturday called for India to reiterate its support for the ‘One-China’ policy in the backdrop of the crisis in the Taiwan Strait, a day after New Delhi suggested that there was no need for any “reiteration” on it. The comments by Chinese Ambassador Sun Weidong came amid escalating tension between China and Taiwan following US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to the self-governing island last week. On the eastern Ladakh border standoff, the envoy said both sides should maintain dialogue and work for a mutually acceptable solution even as he noted that Beijing will work hard to bring the bilateral ties back to the “right track”. “My understanding is that India’s ‘One China’ policy has not changed…We hope that India can reiterate support for the ‘One China principle,” he told a group of journalists. At a media briefing on Friday, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi avoided mentioning the ‘One-China’ policy, noting that India’s position on “relevant” … [Read more...] about Hope India Reiterate Its Support for One-China Policy, Says Envoy Amid Taiwan Tensions
Five Chinese state-owned companies to delist from NYSE amid U.S. tensions
Five Chinese state-owned companies, including oil giant Sinopec and China Life Insurance, said on Friday they would delist from the New York Stock Exchange, amid economic and diplomatic tensions with the United States. The companies, which also include Aluminium Corporation of China (Chalco), PetroChina and Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Co, each said that they would apply to delist their American Depository Shares this month. The five, which in May were flagged by the U.S. securities regulator as failing to meet its auditing standards, will keep their listings in Hong Kong and mainland Chinese markets. Beijing and Washington are in talks to resolve a long-running audit dispute that could see Chinese companies banned from U.S. exchanges if they do not comply with U.S. rules. Washington has long demanded complete access to the books of U.S.-listed Chinese companies, but Beijing bars foreign inspection of audit documents from local accounting firms, citing national security … [Read more...] about Five Chinese state-owned companies to delist from NYSE amid U.S. tensions
Four Killed, Nine Injured in Flash Flood in Southwest China
Four people were killed and nine others injured in a flash flood in southwest China on Saturday, local authorities said. Footage published by Chinese media showed water rising rapidly in a river on the outskirts of Sichuan province’s Pengzhou city. Tourists who had been playing in the initially shallow water could be seen running for safety and clambering over rocks as the water rushed towards them, but some were unable to reach the river bank in time. At least one person, a woman stranded on a boulder in the middle of the river, appeared to lose her footing and was swept away by the current, according to a video posted online by the state-owned Beijing Youth Daily. “As of 7.30 pm, the mountain flood has killed four people, severely injured three and lightly injured six others,” Pengzhou emergency response authorities said in a statement. The flood comes during a summer of extreme weather in China, with multiple cities including Shanghai recording their hottest days ever during … [Read more...] about Four Killed, Nine Injured in Flash Flood in Southwest China

AC Milan vs Udinese Live Streaming: When and Where to Watch Serie A 2022-23 Live Coverage on Live TV Online
Serie A returns to our screens this weekend, with the reigning Scudetto winners AC Milan locking horns against Udinese at the historic San Siro Stadium. The match will be underway on Saturday, August 13, at 10:00 pm IST. AC Milan was absolutely clinical and consistent in last year’s Serie A which crowned them as the champions of Italy. Although manager Stefano Pioli lost his dynamic midfielder Franck Kessie at the end of last season, the new signings of Charles De Ketelaere, Yacine Adli, and Divock Origi, will add some strength to their side. Meanwhile, the Udinese side played brilliantly in the sub-division last season to be promoted to the Serie A. However, the top fight is a different gravy and the Udinese side could be grasping at straws to avoid relegation by the end of the season. The new manager Andrea Sottile will be looking to field a strong line-up in the San Siro on Saturday. AC Milan are expected to reign supreme in their season opener but any complacency might result … [Read more...] about AC Milan vs Udinese Live Streaming: When and Where to Watch Serie A 2022-23 Live Coverage on Live TV Online

Click here to read the full article. After 11 seasons and more than two decades on HBO , Emmy voters are still finding “ Curb Your Enthusiasm ” to be, in Larry David parlance, “pretty … pretty … pretty good.” Since the comedy series’ debut in 2000, “Curb” has amassed a staggering 51 nominations — including two wins — with the most recent season adding four noms to its total. After 110 episodes, “Curb’s” tightly plotted yet semi-improvised approach remains fresh and admired enough to continue its enviable showing at the Emmys, not to mention a point of pride to executive producer and showrunner Jeff Schaffer. Rome Bank Heist Thwarted by Tunnel Collapse
ROME — Plans for an alleged bank heist in Rome were thwarted this week when a tunnel being dug to the bank vault collapsed, leaving one of the would-be thieves buried for hours, Italian media report. On Thursday, Andrea Grassi, a 33-year-old bricklayer, was excavating in the tunnel under Via Innocenzo XI with a pickaxe and shovel when the roof of the tunnel gave way, leaving him buried under the rubble. Firefighters managed to free Grassi after some 8 hours underground by digging a parallel ten-meter tunnel to extract him alive. He was taken to the San Camillo hospital where he is considered to be in serious but not life-threatening condition. Grassi, along with accomplices collectively referred to by Italian media as the “hole gang” had rented a defunct laundromat on the street. The basement of the laundromat served as the starting point for the tunnel, believed to be directed to a nearby bank, of which there are three within a 200-meter range. The excavated passage … [Read more...] about Rome Bank Heist Thwarted by Tunnel Collapse
Mets legend Mike Piazza wants you to buy his vodka … because it’s Italian
“We have to start off in Italian because it’s Italian vodka.” Mike Piazza expressed his gratitude in Italian, unprompted, by dropping a “grazie a tutti” four different times during a Friday night event promoting True Vodka, his latest business endeavor. “The Italian part is something that we’re very proud of,” said Piazza, who not long ago purchased an Italian soccer team only to sink them into bankruptcy. True Vodka, according to their own marketing material, is for rich people. They’ve identified their target demographic as people aged 30-50 with household income ranging from $125,000 to $350K, living in “aspirational urban venues and neighborhoods.” As one of the faces of the Mets, a team that’s always represented the city’s working class, Piazza is conveying a message that seems far more aligned with the yuppie Yankees. But, lest you forget, True Vodka is extremely Italian. This is not something that Piazza, who is from Pennsylvania, takes lightly. When asked about how … [Read more...] about Mets legend Mike Piazza wants you to buy his vodka … because it’s Italian
Book review: Jon Raymond’s “Denial,” a compelling novel on climate change
Acclaimed screenwriter Jon Raymond, known for First Cow, Meek's Cutoff, and HBO 's Mildred Pierce, has now written Denial, an enthralling new novel that reimagines the current climate crisis and questions the moral obligation that humans have to each other in a future dog-eat-dog world. In 2052, mankind knows that earlier environmental disasters were the catalyst for that world's global ecological problems. After massive fires decimated South America , cyclones in the Midwest destroyed U.S. agriculture, and the city of Venice has been submerged due to rising sea levels, humans point fingers at the leaders of the planet's fossil fuel industry. A global protest movement led by a group called The Upheavals helped break Earth's fossil fuel dependency, and powerful oil executives were convicted for crimes against the environment. Some of the oil executives got away, including Robert Cave, an engineer and oil pipeline genius. When Jack Henry, a journalist for a struggling … [Read more...] about Book review: Jon Raymond’s “Denial,” a compelling novel on climate change
