‘I hide in my car to get away from my kids – it stops me feeling overwhelmed’
A mum-of-three has admitted to hiding in her car for 90 minutes each week in order to escape her children and enjoy some much-needed time to herself. Claire Haiek, from Sydney, Australia, started making time for herself earlier this year when her seven-year-old daughter Olivia began taking tap dancing lessons, as she would stay in the car for the 30 minutes that the class took. But shortly afterwards, Olivia said she wanted to go to ballet classes too, which run for 45 minutes directly after the tap class, with a 15-minute break in between. This meant that Olivia would be busy for a full 90 minutes, and rather than drive back home to wait for her classes to be finished, Claire decided she would spend that hour and a half by herself in the peace and quiet of her car. Pfizer says tweaked COVID-19 shots boost omicron protection
Pfizer announced Saturday that tweaking its COVID-19 vaccine to better target the omicron variant is safe and works — just days before regulators debate whether to offer Americans updated booster shots this fall. The vaccines currently used in the U.S. still offer strong protection against severe COVID-19 disease and death -- especially if people have gotten a booster dose. But those vaccines target the original coronavirus strain and their effectiveness against any infection dropped markedly when the super-contagious omicron mutant emerged. Now with omicron’s even more transmissible relatives spreading widely, the Food and Drug Administration is considering ordering a recipe change for the vaccines made by both Pfizer and rival Moderna in hopes that modified boosters could better protect against another COVID-19 surge expected this fall and winter. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech studied two different ways of updating their shots -- targeting just omicron, or a … [Read more...] about Pfizer says tweaked COVID-19 shots boost omicron protection
US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters
Police fired tear gas to disperse anti-abortion demonstrators from outside the Arizona Capitol Friday night, forcing lawmakers to huddle briefly in a basement inside the building as they rushed to complete their 2022 session. Thousands of protesters had gathered earlier on the Capitol grounds in Phoenix, divided into groups both supporting and condemning the US Supreme Courts decision overturning Roe v. Wade. SWAT team members with the Department of Public Safety fired tear gas from second floor of the old Capitol building to disperse protesters in the mall between the current House and Senate buildings. KPHO-TV reported the officers opened fire when several anti-abortion protesters started banging on glass doors of the Senate building. Authorities said there were no injuries or arrests. The incident sent Senate lawmakers into the basement for about 20 minutes, said Democratic Sen. Martin Quezada. Stinging tear gas wafted through the building afterward, forcing the Senate to … [Read more...] about US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters
Avoid These Mistakes to Build a Strong Relationship with Your Child
Every parent wants to build a healthy relationship with their child. They want to be their friend, companion and guide in every step. However, sometimes the generation gap doesn’t let them bloom a friendship bond with their kids. Their thought process, upbringing and predetermined norms become a barrier in turning a friend to them. In that case, the relationship seems a little drifting. No matter how hard you try, sometimes this gap becomes, even more, bigger and your kid becomes distant from you. If you don’t want to make your children drift apart, you must stop these habits right away. Punishing your child From a very young age, children develop an understanding and fear of their parent’s behaviour. It is okay to scold your child if they make any mistake and make them realise the wrong, they have done. However, punishing them often leaves a scar on their mind and creates a fear of you. Ignoring your child’s idea A child’s mind is a mix of a lot of ideas which they want to … [Read more...] about Avoid These Mistakes to Build a Strong Relationship with Your Child
What GOP-named justices had said about Roe to Senate panel
WASHINGTON (AP) — The nine justices of the Supreme Court, in a landmark ruling Friday, made clear their views on abortion, with the conservative majority overturning the Roe v. Wade decision from 1973 and stripping away women’s constitutional protections for abortion. The vote was 6-3 to uphold Mississippi’s law banning most abortions after 15 weeks, but Chief Justice John Roberts didn’t join his five fellow conservatives in overturning Roe. He wrote that there was no need to overturn the broad precedents to rule in Mississippi’s favor. Justice Samuel Alito wrote that Roe and Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the 1992 decision that reaffirmed the right to abortion, were wrong had and to be overturned. Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan — the diminished liberal wing of the court — were in dissent. Every high court nominee, in one form or another, was asked during Senate hearings about his or her views of Roe. A look at how the Republican-nominated justices … [Read more...] about What GOP-named justices had said about Roe to Senate panel

PDP Chief Mehbooba Urges Youth to Shun Militancy, Accuses J&K Administration of Corruption
PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday accused the central government of “robbing” jobs, land, and minerals from the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The former J&K chief minister asked people to not feel helpless and to muster the courage to raise their voices for their rights. “They (those at the helm) might try to push you to a point of hopelessness and instill a defeatist attitude in you but you should not lose hope and be more determined to fight,” she said, adding that their situation might get worse than the situation in Gaza if one does not resent. Mehbooba urged the youth to shun militancy and save their lives, claiming that the security forces personnel won’t spare even a new recruit for a few days. “The security is getting incentives for killing militants. I would urge parents to save their kids,” she said, adding, “I hear every day three or four youths have been killed, which means the local recruitment here has increased.” The PDP chief also accused the Jammu and … [Read more...] about PDP Chief Mehbooba Urges Youth to Shun Militancy, Accuses J&K Administration of Corruption
‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
