Downing Street has denied that Boris Johnson suggested Sue Gray could just drop plans to publish her Partygate report - but refused to publicise the minutes of their secretive meeting. The Prime Minister - who is the Whitehall investigator's boss - met her at the start of this month after No10 officials said talks "may be something that she might want to consider." No10 are refusing to release any minutes. But it's now emerged Boris Johnson asked if there was "much point" in publishing her final verdict on lockdown parties after a police probe, the Times and Sky News reported. The PM's official spokesman said he "wouldn't recognise the characterisation that the PM asked her to drop or scrap the report or not proceed with it" after being repeatedly grilled on what took place. The spokesman said: "This was a legitimate meeting about the process rather than the contents of the report. "The Prime Minister did not ask her to drop the report or not proceed with the report. Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia has opened a long-anticipated new phase of the war in Ukraine , launching its eastern offensive in a bid to seize the country's industrial heartland. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the move Tuesday , saying the Kremlin's goal was to achieve the “full liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics,” which together make up the Donbas region. The full-scale assault on Ukraine's east came as the last fighters in Mariupol, the besieged port city that is crucial to Moscow's goals, continued to hold out despite a new Russian deadline to surrender. It also followed Russian strikes across the country, hitting supply lines and military infrastructure and killing at least seven people in the western city of Lviv . The United States is expected to announce another package of military aid, which is expected to be similar in size to the $800 million one the administration … [Read more...] about Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
Russia begins new offensive in the Donbas region
This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia began a new offensive Monday in Ukraine's eastern Donbas region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said. Russia in recent days had been building up its forces for an attack on what is Ukraine’s industrial heartland, where Moscow-backed separatists have been fighting Kyiv for eight years. “We will not give away anything Ukrainian, and we do not need anything that is not ours,” Zelenskyy said. Explosions also rocked Lviv on Monday in a rare and deadly attack on the western Ukrainian city — up to now a safe hub for refugees , Western officials and the media — as the world braces for a major Russian offensive farther east . At least seven people were killed in the Russian missile strikes, Ukrainian officials said, with Russian forces striking areas across Ukraine while readying a new ground offensive in the east. In Mariupol, the strategically crucial southeastern port city … [Read more...] about Russia begins new offensive in the Donbas region
Attacking transgender rights and banning abortion are part of the same theocratic worldview
This weekend Alabama passed a brutally cruel law criminalizing health care for transgender youth. Discussion of this escalation of state violence and tyranny has been muted because politicians and activists have mostly been focused on the Supreme Court’s sweeping, horrifying threat to gut abortion rights . But the attack on trans people and the attack on pregnant people are both part of the same Christian theocratic authoritarian weaponization of health care. It needs to be opposed everywhere, or reactionaries will build power and hatred to use against everyone. The Alabama bill, signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey this week, makes it a felony for doctors to prescribe puberty blockers, hormones, or surgery to trans people under the age of 19. The law also requires school counselors and nurses to tell parents if they believe their child is trans. There is a broad consensus among medical professionals that trans youth benefit from gender-affirming care. Trans … [Read more...] about Attacking transgender rights and banning abortion are part of the same theocratic worldview

Raccoon stuck headfirst after munching through roof caught in bizarre photo
A wildlife expert in Santa Cruz, California, directed a resident on how they can remove a raccoon that managed to get itself stuck headfirst after it chewed through a roof. The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter shared a post on Facebook and reported that Wildlife Emergency Services received the call on Monday. A photo accompanied the post, and it showed half of the raccoon's body sticking out of the roof of a house in the Santa Cruz Mountains. "Knowing that time was critical, [Wildlife Emergency Services] instructed the citizen how to push the raccoon through the hole so it wouldn't suffocate," the agency's post stated. According to the Humane Society of the United States , a raccoon most often builds a den in a house's chimney or attic, though it can make itself at home anywhere in the structure. If a homeowner discovers that they have a raccoon living in their ceiling or wall, they are encouraged to first knock on the spot they hear any noise coming from. "When … [Read more...] about Raccoon stuck headfirst after munching through roof caught in bizarre photo
How a mysterious Putin ally, the ‘Russian Gatsby,’ moves his billions
On the day Russia invaded Ukraine , Vladimir Putin summoned 37 of his country’s most powerful business leaders to the Kremlin. The Russian president told them the incursion had been “a necessary measure” and asked them “to be understanding of what is going on.” Russia’s stock exchange had just closed at a 33 percent loss, wiping out an estimated $71 billion in wealth, with a raft of new sanctions from the United States and the European Union already in effect and more on the way. For many oligarchs in the room, it would be their first taste of international financial restrictions. But for others, like Suleiman Kerimov, sanctions were nothing new. The enigmatic, Ferrari-driving billionaire and his family have gone to great lengths to shield their assets, documents suggest, an effort that would have helped to insulate him when he and other Russian elites were sanctioned by the U.S. in 2018 for benefitting from the country’s “malign activity around the globe.” … [Read more...] about How a mysterious Putin ally, the ‘Russian Gatsby,’ moves his billions
Missing Kaitlin Armstrong “did not” murder cyclist love rival, father says
The father of missing realtor and yoga teacher Kaitlin Armstrong, who police have accused of going on the run after killing a love triangle rival , has insisted his daughter could not be the killer. Michael Armstrong claims he "knows" the 34-year-old is not capable of committing the crime, and therefore she could not be responsible for gunning down rising cycling star Anna Moriah Wilson, 25. The athlete was shot multiple times at a friend's home in Austin, Texas, back on May 11, while Wilson was questioned by police the next day and disappeared the day after that. Speaking to Good Morning America on Tuesday, dad Michael Armstrong said: "I know her. I know how she thinks and I know what she believes. And I know that she just would not do something like this. I know her. I know her." When asked about the police's allegations that his daughter had killed Wilson, he replied: "That is what they believe. I know that she did not do this. There are a lot of unanswered questions." … [Read more...] about Missing Kaitlin Armstrong “did not” murder cyclist love rival, father says
Rail union leader says blackouts a ‘realistic possibility’ in biggest strike in a generation
Blackouts, fuel shortages or empty shelves are a “realistic possibility” if ministers refuse to back down over the biggest rail strike since privatisation, a union chief said today. RMT general secretary Mick Lynch spoke to the Mirror after closing a ballot of 40,000 workers at 15 companies and Network Rail - over pay, conditions and 2,500 Network Rail maintenance job cuts. A result is expected tonight or tomorrow morning - with Mr Lynch expecting members would overwhelmingly back strike action. He said walkouts could begin as soon as mid-June and refused to rule out them lasting into next year - or escalating into a general strike. He warned Tory ministers plan to “shut virtually every ticket office in Britain”, meaning the “end of passenger assistance” as the elderly and vulnerable are directed to apps and websites. Promising a “rolling campaign” of roadshows into left-behind towns and villages he added: “This is a regular industrial dispute. It’s not one with a political … [Read more...] about Rail union leader says blackouts a ‘realistic possibility’ in biggest strike in a generation
Facebook Leftists Leak ‘Trust’ Graph to Discredit Breitbart, But Hide Methodology
The Wall Street Journal published a single slide from an internal Facebook file purporting to measure “trust” in news publishers on the platform, but the source who passed it to the newspaper included no details about the methodology used to collect the data, which users were surveyed, or who conducted the survey. The slide shows a graph with news publishers dotted around in four quadrants: “false negatives, “true negatives,” “false positives,” and “true positives,” although there is scant explanation of what each of these categories mean. “We do not have access to the underlying methodology,” said a Wall Street Journal reporter. “Wish we did,” the reporter added. The chart was cited by Facebook leftists as part of a wider internal effort to suppress Breitbart News . In one of the discussions leaked to the WSJ, one Facebook employee expressed concern that using “trust” as an excuse to censor Breitbart News could result in publishers like CNN being censored as well, … [Read more...] about Facebook Leftists Leak ‘Trust’ Graph to Discredit Breitbart, But Hide Methodology
