Gail Collins: Bret, which do you think is more of a threat to Donald Trump’s political future, the classified document drama at Mar-a-Lago or the legal challenge to his businesses in New York? Bret Stephens: Gail, I suspect the most serious threats to Trump’s future, political or otherwise, are Big Macs and KFC buckets. Otherwise, I fear the various efforts to put the 45th president out of business or in prison make it considerably more likely that he’ll wind up in the White House as the 47th president. How about you? Gail: Sigh. You’re probably right but I’m still sorta hoping New York’s attorney general can hit him in the pocketbook. He’s super vulnerable when it comes to his shady finances — I’m even surprised he can find lawyers who have confidence they’ll keep being paid. Bret: No doubt the Trump Organization was run with the kind of fierce moral and financial rectitude you’d expect if Elizabeth Holmes had been put in charge of Enron. But the essential currency of … [Read more...] about Does It Matter That Investigators Are Closing In on Trump?

Fairness, decency, competence and hope are valuable political and economic currencies soaring in value for Keir Starmer while Liz Truss trashes the Tory Party’s reputation and the pound. Labour’s leader can’t believe his luck that the Conservatives declared class war on the country, championing a wealthy tiny minority over the struggling overwhelming majority. People aren’t stupid and know they’ll pay for bulging bags of swag gifted to a well-heeled elite, including high-rollers bankrolling the Tories, by Truss and sidekick Kwasi Kwarteng. Dividing lines between Labour and the Cons don’t come redder or thicker than fat bonuses for bankers when out of pocket workers are lectured to tighten their belts. 'Politics feels different this time, Truss misreading the national mood' ( Image: Tayfun Salci/ZUMA Press Wire/REX/Shutterstock) The Tory special financial operation is a suicide note, a moment as momentous as the so-called Winter of Discontent was forJim Callaghan’s … [Read more...] about ‘Keir Starmer can’t believe his luck that the Tories declared class war on the country’

Keir Starmer has blasted the Government for making "an absolute mess of the economy" as the International Monetary Fund issued a damning verdict of the Chancellor's tax-slashing mini-Budget. In an extraordinary statement, the IMF said it was "closely monitoring" the situation in the UK and urged the Chancellor to "re-evaluate the tax measures". It warned that Kwasi Kwarteng's plans risked fuelling inequality and pushing up prices. It comes as the pound fell again on Wednesday following the warning, with sterling back to 1.06 US dollars after reaching 1.08 US dollars on Tuesday. The Labour leader said the rare intervention from the IMF was "very serious" and insisted the Government would have to act before a promised statement in November. ( Image: PA) Mr Starmer told LBC: "I think the IMF statement is very serious, and it shows just what a mess the Government have made of the economy and it's self-inflicted. "This was a step they didn't have to take. Quite … [Read more...] about Keir Starmer demands Tories respond to ‘mess’ of economy as Brits ‘very, very worried’

With Liz Truss only a few weeks in office, the mood in the party once again appears divided as some MPs hit out at the tax-cutting plans announced on Friday by Kwasi Kwarteng, with one prominent backbencher calling his party leader’s plan “inept madness”. It comes as the Bank of England was forced to launched an emergency bond-buying programme to prevent borrowing costs from spiralling out of control and to stave off a “material risk to UK financial stability”. The International Monetary Fund, in a highly unusual move, has already flagged serious concerns about the mini-budget. The crisis has prompted Labour and other opposition parties to call for a recall of … [Read more...] about Truss plans branded ‘inept madness’ amid Tory concerns over market chaos
