Worst air pollution
A NINE-year-old girl died after repeated asthma attacks linked to air pollution on busy roads near her home, a report has found. It may become the first death directly attributed to illegal levels of air pollution in the UK – sparking calls for more to be done to tackle the problem. If the cause of death is confirmed it will strengthen the case for tougher penalties against high pollution diesel cars. Ella Roberta Kissi-Debrah died in 2013 after 27 visits to hospitals in three years due to asthma attacks. She lived just 80ft from London's South Circular Road in Hither Green, where pollution regularly exceeded legal limits. Prof Stephen Holgate, an expert on asthma and air pollution based at the University of Southampton, found a "striking association" between Ella's emergency hospital admissions and spikes in nitrogen dioxide and PM10 [particulate matter] pollution, according to The Times. She died after one of the "worst air pollution episodes in her locality". His report, … [Read more...] about First person to ‘die from air pollution’ is girl, 9, who suffered asthma attack

By Neha Dasgupta and Krishna N. Das NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Only a handful of India’s 100 most polluted cities have drawn up plans to combat air pollution despite being asked to do so three years ago, senior government officials said on Wednesday after a damning report by the World Health Organisation. India is home to the world’s 14 most polluted cities, the WHO said, based on the amount of particulate matter under 2.5 micrograms found in every cubic metre of air. Environment ministry officials said the WHO’s findings were embarrassing but not surprising. “It hurts India’s image, hurts the India story, hurts tourism, hurts medical tourism,” said one official, ruing that fewer than 30 cities had an action plan ready to fight air pollution. “India will eventually overcome the problem, but my frustration is with the timeline.” The ministry could spend about 7 billion rupees (77 million pounds) this fiscal year to help cities set up … [Read more...] about Indian officials lament inaction of cities with world’s worst air
Norwich is one of 32 UK cities exceeding air pollution levels set by the World Health Organisation, a new report says. Castle Meadow, left, has been partly blamed for the rate. Right, a morning of smong in Norwich. Picture: Simon Finlay/Archant Archant Norwich has been identified as one of 32 cities around the country exceeding air pollution levels. The World Health Organisation (WHO) data shows the areas have fine particle air pollution levels above its limit of 10 micograms per cubic metre. Norwich has a score of 11, the body says, and is joined on the list by cities including Thurrock, Leeds, Liverpool and London. Port Talbot, in Wales, has the highest figure at 18. Fine air particle pollution is linked to diseases including stroke, heart disease, lung cancer and respiratory infections, the WHO says. The report said that seven million people a year are dying due to poor air quality, and nine out of 10 people worldwide are exposed to levels of air pollution that are dangerous to … [Read more...] about Norwich has some of the worst air pollution levels in the country, report shows
