The third annual Los Angeles Women's March brought out a noticeably smaller number than in years past to the streets of downtown, but the crowds (estimated at about 200,000) were no less passionate in their anti-Trump, pro-equality message, as seen in the thousands of colorful and caustic signs, banners, costumes and T-shirts that flooded the area, and as heard onstage and in the streets all Saturday morning and afternoon. Though controversy concerning the founders of the national march sapped some enthusiasm for the protest, messages of resistance and mobilization remained at the forefront both in Pershing Square, where the march began (with Gloria Allred leading the way), and at City Hall, where speakers including Laverne Cox, Lance Bass, Anjelica Huston and the president of Planned Parenthood spoke out and rallied for the fight against our current government's discriminatory policies. Claims of anti-Semitism against the leaders of Women's March Inc. have rocked the movement, with some local organizers looking to distance themselves from the group. Two of the leaders were accused of saying at a private organizing meeting that Jews bore a particular responsibility for the oppression of people of color, The New York Times andTablet magazine reported — claims both leaders have denied. The controversy has amplified recent divisions within the Women's March over the group's inclusiveness, after millions turned out worldwide for the first demonstrations in January 2017, largely in response to the inauguration of President Donald Trump. Fallout from the dispute has had an impact on local women's marches across the country, which are grappling with how to respond. Adkins said the New Orleans march, which is affiliated with the national organization, had a "terrible time" fundraising since mid-November, taking in just over $600 of the roughly $8,000 to $10,000 needed … [Read more...] about Anti-Semitism claims rocked the Women’s March. The cases were reviewed by a task force established to evaluate sex abuse allegations in the entertainment industry in the wake of dozens of women accusing disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein and others of abuse. Representatives for Spacey and Seagal did not immediately return emails seeking comment.
