In late February, three weeks after she had an operation for a recurrence of cancer, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg went to Barack Obama’s first address to Congress. Given the circumstances, it wasn’t an event anyone expected her to attend. She went, she said, because she wanted the country to see that there was a woman on the Supreme Court. Now another woman, Judge Sonia Sotomayor, is about to begin the confirmation hearings that stand between her and a seat near Ginsburg on the high bench. After 16 years on the court — the last three, since the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, as the only woman working alongside eight men — Ginsburg has a unique perspective on what’s at stake in Sotomayor’s nomination. I sat down with the 76-year-old justice last week to talk about women on the bench and their effect on the dynamics and decisions of the court. I first met Justice Ginsburg a year ago, when she invited me to her chambers and to a tea for international fellows from Georgetown … [Read more...] about The Place of Women on the Court

Camilla was joined by dignitaries including Ukraine's first lady and Queen Rania of Jordan, as well as charity ambassadors and survivors of abuse at an event described by the palace as "a high watermark" of her work on the subject. In a speech, the Queen Consort spoke of how more than 2,000 women will be killed by a partner or relative during the current UN 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence - an annual international campaign to inspire action to tackle the issue. "Up to one in three women across the globe will endure domestic abuse in the course of their lifetimes," she said. On a hot Texas morning in 2020, Giselle, who goes by G, slipped her arms into a borrowed blazer, flipped up the nose ring in her septum so it couldn’t be seen and walked into the Coryell County Courthouse. It was the first time she had ever been to court. She was 17, 11 weeks pregnant and already beginning to show. She was going to ask a judge for authorization to seek an abortion. Her lawyer had explained that she needed to prove that she was mature enough to make this decision. G squeezed her lips around her braces, reminding herself not to smile. She didn’t want the judge to see her as a child. Because G was a minor, her access to an abortion was governed by the state’s “parental involvement” law. She could have either notified her mother or father and gotten consent, or she could have filed a petition in her home county, asking for what’s known as a judicial-bypass … [Read more...] about Was She Ready to Be a Mother? New York-based investor Leon Black is being sued by a woman who alleges the former Museum of Modern Art chair raped her in 2002. Cheri Pierson claims that 20 years ago, the infamous Jeffrey Epstein introduced her to Black at his Upper East Side mansion. She says she was there to give Black a $300 massage, something she’d done for Epstein five times before. Pierson says she would never consent to Epstein’s wish to include sex acts with the massage. So, he cut her loose. The suit says Pierson soon found herself “in desperate need for money,” so she reconnected with him. That’s when Epstein introduced her and Black. The 300-pound Black is alleged to have arrived with his $300 and two of them went upstairs for the massage. That’s when he allegedly attacked her, which included forced oral sex and biting. Pierson says she only weighed 125 pounds and was helpless against the much bigger man, who was 51 at the time. She met up with him a couple of times after, she admits. One time, … [Read more...] about Nolte: Investor Leon Black Accused of Raping Woman in Epstein’s Home

When the Facebook message that challenged her entire life’s story arrived earlier this month, Melanie Walden refused to believe it. “There’s no way that could be me,” she told the people who sent it. But the message, from two women who said they were her sisters and a man who said he was her father, insisted that she had been abducted as a 1-year-old in 1971 and that they had spent five decades, nearly their entire lives, searching for her. And they had DNA evidence. Ms. Walden, 53, who cleans houses and her local church, was settled in her life in Fort Worth, after several marriages and three children. “I couldn’t believe such a thing,” she said in an interview Tuesday. The women, Sharon Highsmith and Rebecca Del Bosque, and the man, Jeffrie Highsmith, told Ms. Walden that her real name was Melissa Highsmith — “Baby Melissa” in the missing posters — and that she had been taken away by a woman posing as a babysitter in Fort Worth all those years ago. After decades of … [Read more...] about A Baby Abduction, a DNA Match and a Tearful Reunion 51 Years Later
