‘Stop Raping Us’: Top Stripped with Pants Stained Red, Woman at Cannes Protests War Crimes in Ukraine
In an incident that disrupted the proceedings at the Cannes Film Festival for a brief period on Friday, a topless woman shouted down the red carpet with the words ‘Stop Raping Us’ painted on her body stark against the colours of the Ukrainian flag. According to reports, the lone demonstrator stripped off on the red carpet to reveal her body as a mark of protest against sexual crime against women in the ongoing Ukraine war. Clad in underpants stained red, the solo protester screamed and posed for photographers. Soon, security guards with a jacket managed to get a hold of her and cover her while leading her off the red carpet. The woman’s stunt briefly interrupted the parade of guests in evening wear, including Tilda Swinton and Idris Elba, attending the premiere of their film Three Thousand Years of Longing by George Miller. At the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival on May 17, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy launched a video appeal for aid for his country … [Read more...] about ‘Stop Raping Us’: Top Stripped with Pants Stained Red, Woman at Cannes Protests War Crimes in Ukraine
China Brandishes ‘Shotguns’ at U.S. over Taiwan Less than a Month After CA Church Shooting
The Chinese Foreign Ministry warned America on Tuesday it would “welcome with shotguns” and “jackals” anyone seeking to support Taiwan. The threat came a day after President Joe Biden claimed America had a “commitment” to defend Taiwan from a Chinese invasion and less than a month after a man opened fire on a Taiwanese church group in California, allegedly driven by Chinese nationalist “hate.” The Chinese Communist Party has taken no responsibility for the alleged actions of David Chou (Chou Wenwei), a naturalized American born and raised in Taiwan who is facing the death penalty for a mass shooting in Laguna Woods, California, that left one man dead and five people between the ages of 66 and 92 injured. Prior to the shooting, Chou had attended a meeting of an umbrella organization tied to a Chinese government “foreign mission” in 2019, holding up a banner condemning Taiwanese “demons.” More recently, he reportedly sent a manifesto titled “Diary of an Independence-Destroying … [Read more...] about China Brandishes ‘Shotguns’ at U.S. over Taiwan Less than a Month After CA Church Shooting
Passenger who landed plane says “hand of God” was with him
A Florida man with no flying experience who kept his cool while landing a small plane says “the hand of God” was with him after the pilot collapsed at the controls. Darren Harrison told NBC 's “Today" show that he was relaxing with his feet up in the back of the single-engine Cessna after a fishing trip in the Bahamas when the pilot told him and another passenger: “Guys, I gotta tell you I don’t feel good." “He said, ‘I've got a headache and I’m fuzzy and I just don’t feel right," the 39-year-old flooring salesman said. “And I said, ‘What do we need to do?' and at that point he didn’t respond at all." Harrison climbed into the cockpit and saw that the plane was diving, and fast. “All I saw when I came up to the front was water out the right window and I knew it was coming quick. At that point I knew if I didn’t react, that we would die." Running an abortion clinic while waiting for court decision
The people who run America’s abortion clinics agree: There’s no job like it. There are the clients -- so many of them desperate, in need, grateful. There are the abortion opponents -- passionate, relentless, often furious. And hovering over it all are legal challenges, and the awareness that your clinic may be just a judicial ruling away from extinction. That reality became more urgent last week with a leaked, draft opinion from the U.S. Supreme Court suggesting a majority of justices support overturning the 1973 Roe vs Wade decision legalizing abortion. If that happens it could spell the end of abortion in about half the states. The Associated Press talked with three women and one man who run abortion clinics in such states about their work. Some came to the work through personal brushes with abortion; for others it started as a job. For all, it has become a calling. ___ Recommended Monkeypox: British tourist tested for virus Boris … [Read more...] about Running an abortion clinic while waiting for court decision
Attacking transgender rights and banning abortion are part of the same theocratic worldview
This weekend Alabama passed a brutally cruel law criminalizing health care for transgender youth. Discussion of this escalation of state violence and tyranny has been muted because politicians and activists have mostly been focused on the Supreme Court’s sweeping, horrifying threat to gut abortion rights . But the attack on trans people and the attack on pregnant people are both part of the same Christian theocratic authoritarian weaponization of health care. It needs to be opposed everywhere, or reactionaries will build power and hatred to use against everyone. The Alabama bill, signed into law by Governor Kay Ivey this week, makes it a felony for doctors to prescribe puberty blockers, hormones, or surgery to trans people under the age of 19. The law also requires school counselors and nurses to tell parents if they believe their child is trans. There is a broad consensus among medical professionals that trans youth benefit from gender-affirming care. Southern Baptist Convention pledges to release secret database of accused sex offenders
The Southern Baptist Convention's executive committee on Tuesday promised to make publicly available a version of an internal database identifying known and accused sex abusers within its church. Its decision was discussed during a virtual meeting that followed the release Sunday of an outside report commissioned by the committee that detailed widespread allegations of sexual misconduct among clergy and a cover-up involving the upper echelons of the Southern Baptist Convention. The first step to create transparency, committee leaders said, will be to make public the list of sex abusers that was maintained by a former committee vice president, August Boto, who retired in 2019. The list will be released, however, only after the names of survivors and confidential witnesses are redacted from reports, as well as the names of alleged sex abusers whose actions remain uncorroborated, said Gene Besen, the committee's interim counsel. "It's our commitment and intent to review … [Read more...] about Southern Baptist Convention pledges to release secret database of accused sex offenders
Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
This live blog is now closed. For the latest updates please check here . Russia has opened a long-anticipated new phase of the war in Ukraine , launching its eastern offensive in a bid to seize the country's industrial heartland. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the move Tuesday , saying the Kremlin's goal was to achieve the “full liberation of the Donetsk and Luhansk republics,” which together make up the Donbas region. The full-scale assault on Ukraine's east came as the last fighters in Mariupol, the besieged port city that is crucial to Moscow's goals, continued to hold out despite a new Russian deadline to surrender. It also followed Russian strikes across the country, hitting supply lines and military infrastructure and killing at least seven people in the western city of Lviv . The United States is expected to announce another package of military aid, which is expected to be similar in size to the $800 million one the administration … [Read more...] about Moscow launches a new phase of the conflict
Cop buying Bible told to leave over store’s “police-free” stance: officer
A woman who claimed to be a police officer said a bookstore in Chicago asked her to leave and was told the business was "not a cop friendly space." In a widely-circulated Facebook message , shared on May 17, Jo Bridges said she had walked into Pilsen Community Books (PCB) to buy a Bible for her home. She added: "When I walked in, in uniform, I was told I couldn't be in there because of my equipment. I told her I was on duty and could carry. She went on to say 'this is not a cop-friendly space.' "As a gay Mexican-American, who's served her country and continues to serve her community, I'm shocked and heartbroken." The officer added: "My beloved Pilsen, my home, my barrio where I lived for 7 years and still own a home there…I'm embarrassed and heartbroken for the way she treated me. "I promise you, I didn't get mad as I walked out but my voice did crack when I told her how as a woman, a Mexican, a member of the community, I couldn't believe what she was doing.
