Family of Florida Woman Slain in Costa Rica Sues Airbnb, Resort Owners

· December 21, 2018 ·

Relatives of a 36-year-old Florida woman slain in Costa Rica are suing Airbnb and the resort where she was vacationing when she died. Carla Stefaniak's family filed the lawsuit Thursday in Hillsborough County, Florida. The Tampa Bay Times reports the lawsuit says the Villa le Mas resort and Airbnb failed to conduct a background check on a Nicaraguan security guard who was in Costa Rica illegally. Authorities in the Central American country say the guard, Bismark Espinoza Martinez, killed Stefaniak on Nov. 28 after she returned alone to the apartment she rented through Airbnb in the San Jose neighborhood of San Antonio de Escazú. Airbnb has removed Villa le Mas from its rental properties website. Villa Le Mas' attorney has said the resort's owners are cooperating with investigators. French PM to Announce Delay to Fuel Tax Hikes That Sparked Protests: Local Media

· December 4, 2018 ·

French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe will announce a suspension of fuel tax hikes, a major U-turn in an effort to appease a protest movement that has radicalized and plunged Paris into chaos last weekend, French media reported Tuesday. Both Le Monde newspaper and France Info radio said the planned increase, which has provoked violent riots, will be suspended for several months. Philippe is also expected to announce other measures aimed at easing tensions, just three weeks after insisting that the government would not change course and remained determined to help wean French consumers off polluting fossils fuels. Philippe will speak later Tuesday to lawmakers from President Emmanuel Macron's party. There was no immediate comment from his office Tuesday morning. It's unlikely Philippe's announcement will put an end to the road blockades and demonstrations, with more possible protests this weekend in Paris.
