Coco Gauff missed out on reaching a first grass-court final on Saturday when the 18-year-old American lost to Ons Jabeur 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the semifinals of the Berlin Open. Cheered on by fans waving Tunisian flags amid a heatwave in Berlin, Jabeur recovered from 3-1 down in the first set and dominated the second to set up a final against Belinda Bencic on Sunday. “You have to be this good to beat Coco, you know. She’s a great player,” Jabeur said. She added she had “no expectations” of her first grass tournament of the season and paid tribute to the Tunisian fans. “Everywhere I go they’re always here, they’re chanting all the time, it’s amazing,” she said. Jabeur will play her fourth final in a season where she has reached a career-high ranking of fourth in the world and became the first African and first Arab player to win a WTA 1000 event at last month’s Madrid Open. Rainfall Deficit Down to 2% as Monsoon Advances, Reservoir Capacity Improves Across States
With the southwest monsoons inching ahead, rainfall deficit across India has narrowed down to 2% from 32% last week, improving reservoir storage in most parts of the country. Out of 143 reservoirs monitored by the Central Water Commission (CWC), 103 reservoirs have reported more than 80% normal storage so far. It is still less than 50% for as many as 19 reservoirs. As of June 23, seasonal rains have been in the excess to the tune of 32% for north-east, where it seems the worst is yet to be over. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated heavy rainfall is likely to continue over sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura for the next five days. The region, especially Assam and Meghalaya, have been battling severe floods, with the June rainfall breaking its previous records at several places. ‘India, Russia should have direct trade and investment agreements’
As Russia’s access to its traditional markets of exports and imports are hugely limited following its Ukraine invasion and the subsequent sanctions, Moscow is looking to develop new trade and investment relations with partners in Asia, including India, China and Southeast Asian countries, said Russian aluminium tycoon Oleg Deripaska. Speaking on the sidelines of 25th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), also known as the ‘Russian Davos’, Mr. Deripaska, founder of RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminium producers, said there’s an understanding that “the new normal” would fundamentally change Russia’s economic reality. To facilitate such a shift, he said, Russia needed to create the same kind of infrastructure as it had built over the 12 years, from 1991 to 2003, with Europe. This includes setting up new logistics routes and related infrastructure, customs procedures, trade agreements, infrastructure for settlements, gaining access to debt capital markets and … [Read more...] about ‘India, Russia should have direct trade and investment agreements’
Chicago White Sox drop their 4th straight, falling to the Baltimore Orioles 6-2: ‘You get outplayed, you lose’
Tony La Russa had a simple answer after the latest setback for the Chicago White Sox. “The problem is whenever we’ve pitched well, they’ve pitched better, whenever we hit, they’ve hit better,” the manager said. “You get outplayed, you lose games.” The Sox dropped their fourth straight, falling to the Baltimore Orioles 6-2 in front of 29,282 at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Orioles scored four runs in the seventh to pull away. “They’re pitching us well,” La Russa said. “We’ll figure something else to do. There’s always something else you can do.” The Sox need to figure it out soon. They began the four-game series Thursday with an opportunity for some momentum ahead of a West Coast trip and a chance to get back over .500, playing a team that is last in the American League East. Instead they’ve lost the first three, getting outscored 14-3 in the process. The Orioles (34-39) have one more win than the Sox (33-37). “It’s part of the ups and downs of a season,” said Sox … [Read more...] about Chicago White Sox drop their 4th straight, falling to the Baltimore Orioles 6-2: ‘You get outplayed, you lose’
Man accused of being abusive shares last conversation with partner day before she died
A man accused of being abusive has revealed his last conversation with his ex-partner claiming they were "very much in love" when she was found dead the next day. An inquest into the death of Jessica Laverack, known as Jessie, heard how she had moved to East Yorkshire from Rotherham in 2017 to escape her ex-boyfriend Patrick Walsh. But Mr Walsh, who described Jessie as his fiancé, is said to have found out where she lived and sent her a letter before turning up at her home unannounced, Hull Live reports. Jessie, 34, was found dead at her home in Beverley on February 2, 2018, with a handwritten note which read "I'm sober and will stay that way. I also know I'm scared of you and that's so hard to say out loud and tell you that." The inquest at Hull Coroners Court heard how police had charged Mr Walsh with assaulting Jessie, but the case was dropped at court when she withdrew the claim. Jessie Laverak had moved to Beverley to escape her ex, but he denies these allegations … [Read more...] about Man accused of being abusive shares last conversation with partner day before she died
Japan, Australia to expand defense ties for regional order
Japan and Australia 's defense ministers on Wednesday vowed to step up their ties to support democratic values in the Indo-Pacific region and agreed to work more closely with Southeast Asia and the Pacific island nations where China is seeking to expand its influence. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles and his Japanese counterpart, Nobuo Kishi, said that region-wide cooperation is necessary to maintain and strengthen the rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific, where there is growing fear that Russia's invasion of Ukraine may embolden China to increase its assertiveness. The ministers’ talks came just three days after they met in Singapore on the sidelines of the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum. “It is clear that our region faces the most complex set of strategic circumstances we have had since the end of World War II and what the region does matters,” Marles told a joint news conference in Tokyo after holding talks with Kishi. “Only by working … [Read more...] about Japan, Australia to expand defense ties for regional order
