While several Republican lawmakers have called on President Joe Biden to increase domestic energy production in the wake of rising gas prices, energy experts warn that doing so could be detrimental to climate action goals that the U.S. is already not living up to. As of June 30, the American Automobile Association reported that the average price for gas sat at nearly $4.857 per gallon across the nation, leading some members of Congress to blame the Biden administration's "war on American energy" and restrictive policies for oil companies. But climate activists and progressives argue against the call to increase domestic production of oil, saying that doing so could undermine the president's climate-focused agenda and calls for transition to cleaner energy. Samantha Gross, director of the Energy Security and Climate Initiative at the Brookings Institution, told Newsweek that the two sides put Biden in a "real pickle" and that any policies moving forward will require a … [Read more...] about Increasing U.S. oil production could set climate efforts back decades

The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
Culture Art Relax. They didn't come from Mars or some distant, undiscovered galaxy. The 10 aliens (and their 24 tents) that appeared in the backcountry of Santa Barbara, California, in late January were conceived in the backyard of a hedge-fund manager turned yarn bomber. (For the record, this project can't really be termed guerrilla, since he got a permit from the Los … [Read more...] about The Guerrilla Art of the Yarn Bomb Goes Natural
Washington Blocks More Than $1 Billion in Russian Oligarch’s US Assets
The United States on Thursday blocked a US-based company worth more than $1 billion linked to Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov, saying the ally of President Vladimir Putin used it to funnel and invest shadowy funds. The Treasury Department said that Kerimov, a billionaire active in Russian politics, secretly managed the Delaware-based Heritage Trust which put its money into a number of large public companies. Heritage Trust, set up in 2017, brought money into the United States through shell companies and under-the-radar foundations established in Europe, Treasury Department officials said. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen vowed that the United States would keep taking action “even as Russian elites hide behind proxies and complex legal arrangements.” The United States will “actively implement the multilaterally coordinated sanctions imposed on those who fund and benefit from Russia’s war against Ukraine,” she said in a statement. The action comes weeks after Fiji handed to … [Read more...] about Washington Blocks More Than $1 Billion in Russian Oligarch’s US Assets
