Rishi Sunak has refused to rule out a further emergency cost-of-living package next year despite alarm among some Tories at the impact on the public finances of the latest measures. The Chancellor responded to weeks of mounting pressure over soaring energy bills with the announcement of a £21 billion giveaway to households, partly paid for by a £5 billion levy on the profits of oil and gas companies. In the Commons on Thursday he told MPs the Government could not “sit idly by” while families across the country struggled to make ends meet. However there was anger from some Conservatives , who said the “windfall tax” on the energy giants – which Labour had been pressing for since the start of the year – was “throwing red meat to socialists”. There were also concerns that a £400 discount on energy bills for every household in the country, regardless of how well off they are, would further fuel inflation which is already heading towards 10%. Johnny Depp trial is driving a new online economy. This ex-LA prosecutor is all in
LOS ANGELES: Emily D. Baker is exasperated. In the penultimate week of Amber Heard and Johnny Depp's defamation trial, Baker at times rises from her seat in her home studio or fans herself with a small blue book of the federal rules of evidence as she delivers a steaming critique of Heard's attorney Elaine Bredehoft. "This is preposterous, Elaine! You don't do speaking objections," Baker, 44, seethes as red lights flash to indicate another thousand subscribers have signed up to her channel. A so-called super-chat message flashes across the screen from a viewer who paid US$10 (RM44) to let the audience know she thinks the judge is being too easy on Bredehoft. "This is a mess, and the jury is going to see it's a mess," Baker adds. It is just another day in the weekslong trial for this former Los Angeles deputy district attorney turned YouTuber whose livestreamed commentary has drawn audiences surpassing that of mainstream outlets like Fox or Entertainment Tonight on the platform. As … [Read more...] about Johnny Depp trial is driving a new online economy. This ex-LA prosecutor is all in
Court bans expert from alleging cover-up of COVID-19 Chinese lab origins
A scientist who accused a COVID-19 expert of hiding that the virus originated in a Chinese lab has been banned from spreading "fake news" after a legal challenge. Hamburg-based nanoscience specialist Professor Dr. Roland Wiesendanger alleged in an interview with German magazine Cicero , published in February of this year, that Professor Dr. Christian Drosten from Berlin's Charite Clinic was consciously refusing to tell people the truth about the origin of the COVID-19 virus. Wiesendanger further alleged there was evidence that a botched experiment at a Chinese lab was at the core of the pandemic. The court in Hamburg refused to make any ruling on this claim. Instead, judges ordered Wiesendanger to stop "deliberately spreading false information" about Drosten, the country's leading specialist, who he accused of a cover-up over whether the virus first emerged from a research lab in Wuhan, in central China. In February 2021, Wiesendanger, a nanoscience expert, released a … [Read more...] about Court bans expert from alleging cover-up of COVID-19 Chinese lab origins
We must defeat Putin – the fate of civilisation depends on it
Since the last annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, the course of history has changed dramatically. Russia invaded Ukraine, shaking the European Union, which was established to prevent war from returning to the continent, to its very core. Even when the fighting stops, as it eventually must, the situation will never revert to the status quo ante . Indeed, the Russian invasion may turn out to be the beginning of World War III, and our civilisation may not survive it. The invasion of Ukraine did not come out of the blue. The world has been increasingly engaged over the past half-decade, or longer, in a struggle between two diametrically opposed systems of governance: open society and closed society. Let me define the differences as simply as I can. In an open society, the role of the state is to protect the freedom of the individual; in a closed society, the role of the individual is to serve the rulers of the state. Other issues that concern all humanity – … [Read more...] about We must defeat Putin – the fate of civilisation depends on it
The Playacting Over Masks Really Needed to End
Sign up for Tom’s newsletter, Peacefield, here. The U.S.-government mandate requiring mask wearing on transportation is now dead, and it was killed in the worst way possible. A judge deemed “not qualified” by the American Bar Association wrote a muddled decision that invalidated a regulation hated by the president who picked her, while overriding the authority of the executive branch and its expert advisers to make policy. And yet, Federal District Judge Kathryn Mizelle just did President Joe Biden a favor. She got him out from under a policy that served little purpose. His administration will challenge the Trump-appointed jurist’s ruling—and it should, not to reimpose the mandate, but to preserve the power of the executive branch to issue national health regulations when needed. But Biden should be glad, as the airlines clearly are, that the masking theater is over. Mask mandates were a stopgap, an emergency safety measure imposed by governments with few other options to … [Read more...] about The Playacting Over Masks Really Needed to End
Oil climbs on tight supply, prospect of EU ban on Russian supply
Oil prices rose on Thursday, extending a cautious rally this week on signs of tight supply while the European Union (EU) wrangles with Hungary over plans to ban imports from Russia, the world's second-largest crude exporter, after it invaded Ukraine. Brent crude futures gained 87 cents, or 0.8%, to $114.90 a barrel at 1001 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures climbed $1.02, or 0.9%, to $111.35 a barrel. A bigger-than-expected drawdown in U.S. crude inventories in the week to May 20, following soaring exports, buoyed the market on Wednesday. U.S. refiners picked up the pace of activity, boosting overall capacity use to the highest levels since before the pandemic. "The fundamental backdrop ... is getting price supportive as the driving season is approaching and will turn even more bullish once the EU sanctions on Russian oil sales are endorsed by all parties involved," PVM Oil's Tamas Varga said. European Council President Charles Michel on Wednesday said he was … [Read more...] about Oil climbs on tight supply, prospect of EU ban on Russian supply
‘Big bazooka’ support package will get UK through energy crisis, says PM
Boris Johnson has said the Government’s emergency cost-of-living support package is a “big bazooka” which will support families until the surge in energy prices abates. The Prime Minister acknowledged the country still faced a “bumpy time” due to the soaring costs of oil and gas, but said he was confident it would emerge in a “much, much stronger position”. Earlier, Chancellor Rishi Sunak – who on Thursday announced a further £21 billion of support for households – indicated that he could not rule out the need for further measures if global prices remain high. But speaking during a visit to Stockton-on-Tees, Mr Johnson appeared to suggest the measures set out in the Commons – with up to £1,200 for eight million homes across the country – should be enough. “What we are doing now is making sure we support people through tough times. It’s a big bazooka,” he said in a pooled clip for broadcasters. Recommended What Rishi Sunak announced to tackle the … [Read more...] about ‘Big bazooka’ support package will get UK through energy crisis, says PM

Checking in on the superstar shortstops the Yankees passed on during the offseason
It was not long ago that the baseball world cast an eye of confused suspicion on the Yankees. That was before the 32-13 start that’s caused the haters to clam up. But an offseason without any superstar acquisitions felt peculiar, especially as the Yankees could have, theoretically, taken their pick of any of the available shortstops at the right price. Instead, the increasingly frugal front office used the trade market to find their shortstop, with general manager Brian Cashman confirming that the team never even made an offer to Carlos Correa . It has more than paid off so far, as the Yankees have ridden the combination of improved infield defense and altered approaches at the plate to become a much more complete team than the talented but limited one they had in 2021. We’ll never know how Correa, Corey Seager, Trevor Story or Marcus Semien would have began their 2022 seasons had they signed with the Yankees. But through roughly 45 games with their new teams, a few have … [Read more...] about Checking in on the superstar shortstops the Yankees passed on during the offseason
Gleyber Torres homers, anchors defense in 2-0 Yankee win over Rays
ST. PETERSBURG — This winter, as he worked out on his own during the lockout, Gleyber Torres came to terms with where he was in his career. The 25-year-old knew changes had to be made. The big one, a move from shortstop to second base, was made for him before the end of the 2021 season. The other change was going into the Yankees minor league complex before the owners locked the players out and asking new hitting coach Dillon Lawson for help. The changes in Torres are paying off. Friday night. Torres homered and made two strong defensive plays to back up a stellar start by Jameson Taillon in the Yankees 2-0 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field. The Yankees (33-13) won their fourth straight game and guaranteed at least a split of this four-game series in the first meeting with their American League East rival Rays (26-19). They have won 11 of 14 series this season so far. They maintained the best record in baseball with their sixth shutout of the season. Taillon threw a … [Read more...] about Gleyber Torres homers, anchors defense in 2-0 Yankee win over Rays
