Boston may not be seeing the “deadly” cold that has settled on the Midwest, but New England is going to see some arctic temperatures of its own. An arctic cold front will cross the region starting late Wednesday afternoon, bringing with it snow squalls and damaging winds to impact the evening commute, the National Weather Service is forecasting. “Bitterly” cold temperatures and “dangerously low wind chills” are predicted to follow overnight and into Thursday morning. “While it will be bitterly cold, we will not see a historic arctic outbreak occurring over portions of the [Midwest],” the service said. “Our airmass will be delivered on a west wind as opposed to a northwest wind. Nonetheless…low temperatures across most of the region will bottom out between 5 below zero and 5 above zero.” Wind gusts, combined with the already cold temperatures in the single digits and teens, will create wind chills that will make it feel … [Read more...] about 11 maps forecasting how cold it will feel in Massachusetts on Thursday

News / UK and world by Press Association August 23, 2018, 2:02 am FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Daily newsletter A British-built laser satellite has been launched into space on a three-year mission to measure wind speeds. The Aeolus spacecraft took off on a rocket from Kourou in French Guiana at 10.20pm BST on Wednesday, 24 hours later than planned due to bad weather above the spaceport. Less than an hour later, the rocket delivered Aeolus into orbit. The European Space Agency (ESA) mission is expected to provide important data which could significantly improve weather forecasting around the world. Aeolus, named after the keeper of the winds in Greek mythology, was originally due to launch in 2007 but the project was beset by delays. The satellite was built by Airbus Defence and Space in Stevenage and – equipped with a powerful laser – will be the first able to directly measure wind speeds on Earth from space. Flying 200 miles … [Read more...] about British-built wind-mapping satellite launches into orbit
FAMOUS for its rainy weather, Britain has had a suprising run of blazing sun this year - but now there's rain on the way. Here's where it's going to hit and the latest from the Met Office rainfall radar, thunderstorms and all. Where is it going to rain? Tonight: Showers will ease in Wales and the southwest during the evening but probably continue overnight across parts of northwest England. Most of the UK will have … [Read more...] about Rain map UK – where is it going to rain and what is the latest from the Met Office rainfall radar?

It is expected to pick up hurricane speed winds at sea as it brings cooler temperatures and damp conditions for the UK. Early on July 10, the storm was about 210 miles (340 km) south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Chris had maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour (110 km/h). When will Tropical storm Chris hit the UK? Storm Chris is expected to hit the UK as early as July 13. But there is still "uncertainty" about the possible track it will take and if it will be an ex-hurricane before then. Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said: "(By the weekend) Chris is likely to join the jet stream and its remnants are likely to be carried towards the UK.
