In what is being seen as a very significant organisational appointment, the Bharatiya Janata Party has brought in its leader and strategist Sunil Bansal as national general secretary in the party fold. Bansal had a long stint as general secretary (organisation) of Uttar Pradesh. He has been replaced by Dharam Pal, general secretary (organisation), as UP’s Sangathan Mantri. While the reshuffling of responsibilities was on the cards for quite some time, senior party sources said that negotiations on the responsibilities with an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections took some time, to decide the right man for the right post. Bansal, many in the party believe, has been rewarded for his organisational tasks that helped the BJP win election after election following the 2014 Lok Sabha polls in a crucial state like UP that sends 80 MPs to Parliament. An erstwhile Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) karyakarta working in Rajasthan, he rose in stature when Amit Shah chose him for 2014 … [Read more...] about With Eye on 2024 Polls, BJP Gives Savvy Strategist Sunil Bansal Charge of Bengal, Odisha, Telangana

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday defended arrested TMC leader Anubrata Mondal stating the party will continue to “fight this battle to the end”. The TMC supremo also questioned the role of BSF in the cattle smuggling case and asserted the leader will not be cowed down before threats from the Opposition. Addressing the crowd during TMC’s Freedom At Midnight programme in Behala, Kolkata on the eve of India’s 75th Independence Day, the chief minister raised the reason behind Anubrata Mondal’s arrest and said the leader never aspired for any political positions including a berth in Rajya Sabha. In an apparent attack against the opposition, she said, “Why did you arrest Keshto (Anubrata)? You kept him on house arrest before every election… Yet you failed to stop us from winning elections… He never aspired for any positions… Never wanted to become an MP or MLA… Even turned down my request to go to the Rajya Sabha.” She further questioned how the cattle smuggling … [Read more...] about On Anubrata Arrest, Mamata Says Will Fight Battle Till End, Questions BSF’s Role In Cattle Smuggling

The new V-P Any neutral observer of current political affairs in the country would be at best lukewarm about the election of Jagdeep Dhankhar as India’s 14th Vice-President. As a Governor, he often exceeded his brief, leading to conflicts with the duly-elected West Bengal government. Given the relentless showdown between the ruling party and the Opposition, the Rajya Sabha, under his chairmanship, is unlikely to be a genuine forum for the voice of the Opposition. S. Sanjeevi Rao, Puducherry Taiwan and lessons Though the Indian establishment showed extreme laxity and seemingly adopted a questionable position in the aftermath of recent Chinese aggressions in the border areas, Taiwan’s defiance (backed by America) would hardly provide any constructive strategic thinking to deal with an assertive and belligerent Chinese state as well as to fix the border issues between the two countries. In connection with India’s conflictual and painful relationships with China, New Delhi has … [Read more...] about Letters to the Editor — August 8, 2022
Apart from the possible “Shiv Sena fate”, another reason that pushed the Janata Dal (United) to leave the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is the opportunity that Nitish Kumar may get to become the opposition’s prime ministerial candidate in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. According to JD(U) leaders, now is the time to run for the PM post against Narendra Modi, as said by Upendra Kushwaha in a tweet. Kushwaha is the national parliamentary board president of the party. But can Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, a master of U-turns who always seeks power but has seen a consistent political decline in his state, be considered PM material by the Bharatiya Janata Party’s rival camp? Nitish had a good chance to pursue his PM aspirations between 2013 and 2017, but 2022 is going to be a different ball game for him, particularly after his latest U-turn. How Nitish may have lost his chance Nitish Kumar broke the alliance in June 2013 when the BJP made Gujarat chief minister Narendra … [Read more...] about Can Nitish Kumar Become Oppn’s Prime Ministerial Face in 2024, Or Has The ‘Master of U-turns’ Lost His Way?
WHEN, a few years ago, the generosity of Mr. Alfred Mosely sent several English teachers on a tour in the United States, an American teacher contributed to a New York paper her impressions of those visitors whom chance had led to her own school. Her ungrudging tribute to their various excellent qualities reached a climax in her exclamation of delighted surprise: ‘So different from the teachers in Dickens!’ The discovery that Mr. Squeers is scarcely a type of the present-day English schoolmaster and that the methods of Dotheboys Hall do not fairly represent modern English pedagogics may appear somewhat belated. But one cannot very well describe this school-teacher’s mental attitude as exceptional, when one remembers how many people, otherwise well-informed, still derive from the same source their ideas about foreign missions and foreign missionaries. By many intelligent persons Mrs. Jellyby’s projects for the enlightenment of Borrioboola-Gha are taken as representing the real character … [Read more...] about The New Missionary Outlook
