Prince William and Kate Middleton have been hit by a fake break-up rumor picked up and spread by MSN.com. There is nothing to suggest the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are experiencing marital problems and they appeared happy together during a visit to Scotland on May 11. However, an article on French-language website Oh My Mag wrongly suggested Kate had walked out with the couple's three children, the website's publisher told Newsweek . MSN.com then ran a translation hosted on its own website, while a link to the story was posted to its 227,600 Twitter followers on May 17. Outlandish conspiracies about the British royal family appear in the world's media from time to time but what is notable about this example is the role MSN.com played in giving the story the potential to reach a mass audience in Britain and America. A spokesperson for Groupe Cerise, which owns Oh My Mag , told Newsweek : "This story is indeed false and has been published by accident. We are … [Read more...] about Prince William and Kate Middleton false break-up story spreads

Prince William and Kate Middleton’s Bahamas show of intimacy captured in viral TikTok
Prince Willliam and Kate Middleton put on a rare public display of intimacy as they were filmed walking hand-in-hand on their troubled tour of the Caribbean . The royal couple looked thoroughly loved-up in the Bahamas in a recently-resurfaced video. It was an infrequent royal show of affection as they walked through their hotel together on their way to an engagement. William, 39, and Kate, 40, are usually reserved when it comes to their royal appearances, but the pair couldn't resist getting close during their stay in March. American Jimmy Rex shared a clip on TikTok , which has quickly gone viral. Discovering krypton… much before Superman
When I tried searching “krypton” on the Internet, the top ten results almost alternated between two topics. While one set corresponded to krypton the chemical element, the other set referred to the fictitious planet Krypton – from which the comic book superhero Superman hails from. Back in the 19th century, a Scot by the name William Ramsay and his Englishstudent Morris Travers were searching for gases in the helium family. The two Brits believed that a lighter chemical existed to fit the gap left in the Periodic Table between argon and helium. In that sense, their discovery was in fact an accident. Their process involved boiling a sample of liquified air to get rid of the water, nitrogen, oxygen, helium and argon and finding a lighter element that they expected would fill the gap. The researchers, however, overdid the evaporation, leaving only a heavy gas sample behind. The residue was placed in a Plucker tube connected to an induction coil to produce a spectrum with bright … [Read more...] about Discovering krypton… much before Superman
Lawyers: Georgia man’s death sentence is unconstitutional
ATLANTA (AP) — Lawyers for a Georgia man whose execution was put on hold by a judge this week are arguing that he is ineligible for execution because he has cognitive impairments that cause him to function like a young child or someone with intellectual disability. Lawyers for Virgil Delano Presnell Jr. said in a filing with the Georgia Supreme Court on Wednesday that he is a “cognitively disabled man” whose execution is prohibited by the U.S. Constitution. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 2002 that the execution of intellectually disabled people is unconstitutional, and Presnell's lawyers argue that includes people like him with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. Presnell's mother's heavy alcohol use while she was pregnant “profoundly damaged his developing brain months before he was born,” his lawyers wrote. Though he is now 68 years old, he “remains childlike and gullible” and has “enormous difficulty acquiring and processing new information, navigating social interactions, and … [Read more...] about Lawyers: Georgia man’s death sentence is unconstitutional
One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion
The U.S. has now reached the once unthinkable toll of 1 million deaths from COVID-19 . How could this happen in the wealthiest country in the world? In a word, because of poverty—and the policy choices that perpetuate it. Our task now is to make different choices. Americans across the country have suffered during this pandemic. But new research by the Poor People's Campaign strongly suggests the poor and low-income have suffered the most. Even controlling for vaccination rates, they found that COVID-19 death rates in poorer U.S. counties were nearly double those in wealthier counties. During the deadliest phases of the pandemic, it rose to five times as many. White Americans still make up the largest share of America's poor and those who've died from COVID-19. But Black, Hispanic and Indigenous Americans are significantly overrepresented in America's poorest counties, and COVID-19 casualty rates run significantly higher for many communities of color. Poor Americans are … [Read more...] about One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion

Young Thug’s ‘torturous’ jail condition complaints dismissed by officials
Law enforcement officials in Georgia believe that a famous inmate is not being treated poorly while in their custody, disregarding claims saying otherwise. Jeffrey Lamar Williams, better known as Young Thug, and his lawyers have alleged that the conditions he is enduring in jail are "torturous" and inhumane, according to local outlet WSB-TV . Williams' lawyers contend, in a motion seeking bail that was filed last week, that he is being forced into a deplorable predicament. However, members of the Cobb County Sheriff's Office disagreed with that assessment of the situation, stating that to expect luxurious conditions in jail is setting oneself up for disappointment. "This is a jail, it is a detention center. It's not the Ritz Carlton, so you have to recognize that," a jail official told WSB-TV. The complaints from the rapper and his attorneys come after his arrest last week. The Go Crazy rapper was taken into custody at his Atlanta-area home for his supposed connection … [Read more...] about Young Thug’s ‘torturous’ jail condition complaints dismissed by officials
Town forced to shut down after sole clerk resigns over vacation denial
A small town in Maine has effectively shut down after its only clerk resigned. Christen Bouchard resigned from her role as town clerk of Passadumkeag, Maine, on April 7, the Bangor Daily News reported. The town has a population of 356 as of the 2020 census. The record number of Americans quitting their jobs since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has been termed " The Great Resignation ." Quitting rates have continued to soar this year, with over 4.5 million people leaving their jobs in March, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Bouchard stepped down because the board of selectmen denied her a two-week vacation, claiming there was no one available to take over her duties. Unfortunately for the officials, the job that would have needed filling for two weeks is now permanently open. During the time that Bouchard served as town clerk, she also became deputy treasurer and took charge of licensing pets, registering vehicles, maintaining records and liaising with … [Read more...] about Town forced to shut down after sole clerk resigns over vacation denial
Parsing Yoon’s inaugural address
Ko Jung-ae The author is an editorial writer of the JoongAng Ilbo. Inauguration speeches of past presidents were much of the same. They all praised the history of the Korean people, while describing the president as a leader who will open a new era and present many promises in all fields of national governance. For example, the last president made a promise that he will create a country that no one has ever experienced. President Yoon Suk-yeol’s address, however, was different. The difference was more significant than the simple fact that he mentioned “freedom” 35 times but never mentioned “unity.” His inaugural address was to the world audience. At the same time, nationalism was largely diluted. The speech was devoid of any mention of the Korean people. According to Yoon Pyung-joong, honorary professor at Hanshin University, nationalistic sentiments and collective unconscious is a habit of mind for the Korean people. Yoon, however, did not use it at all. In his inaugural … [Read more...] about Parsing Yoon’s inaugural address
