Whodunnit? When it comes to Wagatha Christie, we may never know
Those nine legendary dot dot dots, that triple ellipsis typed out by Coleen Rooney before the fateful words “ Rebekah Vardy ’s account” intimate that she’d given this matter quite some consideration. That she’d hovered, finger on the trigger, for a long thrilling moment, before firing what she thought would be the fatal shot. Her Instagram sting operation had been going on for almost five full months by that point. Five full months to wonder where this deadly road might take her. She’d had all the days and nights she could possibly have needed to work through all the angles, to look down the many branches of history that would fork their way forward from that defining second, when she chucked that irretrievable stink bomb in to the players’ wives enclosure of English football’s VIP club. But even she, surely, did not see that she would be setting herself on this precise path. That it would lead to here, the witness box of the Royal Courts of Justice, where she’d be … [Read more...] about Whodunnit? When it comes to Wagatha Christie, we may never know
Man convicted of murder in killing of Iowa state trooper
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (AP) — A jury on Monday convicted a man of first-degree murder in the shooting death of an Iowa State Patrol trooper last year. Michael Lang, 42, was also found guilty of attempted murder and assaulting a police officer for his actions on April 9, 2021, that killed 51-year-old patrol Sgt. Jim Smith in Grundy Center, a city of nearly 3,000 people about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northeast of Des Moines. He faces a mandatory term of life in prison without the possibility of parole when he's sentenced. Smith, a 27-year patrol veteran, was shot as he led a team of officers into Lang’s home in Grundy Center. Lang had barricaded himself inside the home after he assaulted another officer during a traffic stop that day, police said. Lang was also shot by officers but has recovered. During closing arguments, Assistant Iowa Attorney General Douglas Hammerand called Smith's killing premeditated and intentional, noting that Lang had kept police at bay for hours and that the … [Read more...] about Man convicted of murder in killing of Iowa state trooper

Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes
Israel advanced plans for the construction of more than 4,000 settler homes in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, a rights group said, a day after the military demolished homes in an area where hundreds of Palestinians face the threat of expulsion. It was a jolting illustration of Israel's policies in the territory it has occupied for nearly 55 years. Critics, including three major human rights groups, say those policies amount to apartheid, a charge Israel rejects as an attack on its very legitimacy. Hagit Ofran, an expert on the settlements at the anti-settlement watchdog group Peace Now, said a military planning body approved 4,427 housing units at a meeting on Thursday that she attended. Israeli officials did not respond to requests for comment. It's the biggest advancement of settlement projects since the Biden administration took office. The White House opposes settlement construction and views it as an obstacle to any eventual peace agreement with the … [Read more...] about Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes
Putin keeps “Nazism” focus on Ukraine as Russians point to NATO hopeful
Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly said Monday that Ukraine is the only country that encourages "Nazism" at the state level, and some Russians are now accusing NATO hopeful Sweden of having a similar position. "But nowhere at the state level are the Nazis glorified. Nowhere," Putin said during a Moscow summit, according to Russian-state-owned news agency Ria Novosti. "And nowhere in civilized countries are thousands of neo-Nazi torchlight processions with neo-Nazi symbols encouraged by the authorities. This is not done anywhere. Unfortunately, this is happening in Ukraine." Putin has repeatedly declared that one of Russia's goals in invading Ukraine is the "denazification" of its neighbor , but Ukraine, whose president is Jewish, has strongly refuted the allegations that its government is led by Nazis. Meanwhile, as Putin has focused on purported Nazis in Ukraine, posters have reportedly emerged on Moscow's streets accusing some famous Swedish figures of supporting … [Read more...] about Putin keeps “Nazism” focus on Ukraine as Russians point to NATO hopeful
