Starling Marte placed on bereavement list; James McCann has hand surgery
Starling Marte is going through it. He was placed on the bereavement list, retroactive to May 16, after his grandmother died. Marte has returned to his home in Dominican Republic to be with his family during this difficult time, one that is taking an extra emotional toll on the Mets right fielder. “It was heart wrenching talking to him yesterday,” manager Buck Showalter said on Tuesday. “I don’t think people realize, he’s had a tough go.” Marte’s grandmother took care of him after his mother passed away when he was just 10 years old. To further compound an already unimaginable loss, the two-year death anniversary of his wife, who also died suddenly from a heart attack, is on Wednesday. The Mets have told Marte to take all the time he needs. Technically, placement on the bereavement list can last anywhere from three to seven days, depending on the circumstances, and the number of days cannot be set in advance. As of Tuesday, the Mets were unsure how many games Marte would … [Read more...] about Starling Marte placed on bereavement list; James McCann has hand surgery
Incredible footage shows huge basking shark swimming just metres from kayakers in UK bay
Incredible footage shows a huge basking shark swimming just metres away from kayakers in a bay in Britain. Eilidh Beck was kayaking at Newtown Bay in Millport, Isle of Cumbrae, Scotland, on Sunday (May 8) when she spotted the approximately eight metre long animal in the water. Footage shows the shark's fin and tail sticking out above the water as it swims around close to the island on the Ayrshire coast. Eilidh, from Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, can be heard in the clip saying: "This is amazing. We are kayaking with sharks." She added: "We were in the water for ten minutes when we spotted the shark swimming in the bay. "It was about 14ft long and I would say the closest it got to any of our kayaks was about two feet away. "We met our friend John and the three of us sat watching the shark for a good 30 minutes before letting it go about its business. Eilidh Beck was kayaking when she spotted the huge shark "Our waters have been pretty amazing and they are getting … [Read more...] about Incredible footage shows huge basking shark swimming just metres from kayakers in UK bay
US Couple With 53 Years Age Gap Gushes Over an ‘Excellent, Stable’ Marriage

Heartbroken widower pays tribute to murdered PCSO Julia James who ‘couldn’t do enough’
A heartbroken husband has paid tribute to a PCSO who “couldn’t do enough” for others as a “strange, highly sexualised” loner was found guilty of her brutal murder. Speaking outside court, widowed Paul James fought back tears as he spoke of his “amazing” wife Julia who was ambushed in the woods while walking her dog in April 2021. Jurors took just over an hour to convict Callum Wheeler, 22, of bludgeoning the 53-year-old grandmother to death with a 3kg railway jack handle. Mr James described his wife, who worked supporting victims of domestic abuse, as the “funniest person I have ever met”, adding: "She just helped everybody, she just couldn't do enough." Julia with her dog Toby ( Image: PA) Julia James was found beaten to death as she walked her Jack Russell dog Toby in the countryside near her home in Kent ( Image: PA) "She was just amazing, I was so proud of her. In Buffalo, Biden to confront the racism he’s vowed to fight
By CHRIS MEGERIAN WASHINGTON (AP) — When Joe Biden talks about his decision to run against President Donald Trump in 2020, the story always starts with Charlottesville. He says it was the men with torches shouting bigoted slogans that drove him to join what he calls the “battle for the soul of America.” Now Biden is facing the latest deadly manifestation of hatred after a white supremacist targeted Black people with an assault rifle at a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, and left 10 people dead, the most lethal racist attack since he took office. The president and first lady Jill Biden are to visit the city on Tuesday, where their first stop will be a makeshift memorial outside the supermarket. They’re also expected to meet privately with families of the victims, first responders and local officials before the president delivers public remarks. In a speech at a nearby community center, Biden plans to call for stricter gun laws and urge Americans to reject racism and embrace … [Read more...] about In Buffalo, Biden to confront the racism he’s vowed to fight
‘Keir Starmer said he will resign if he gets a Covid fine – but PM refuses to do so’
Did you read that thing about wrestling in County Durham? Story of the week. I apologise that it’s not politics but I love it. I guess if you need some sort of politics in here, the wrestling took place at Seaham Conservative Club, which is a beautiful detail in itself. Anyways, various families headed down there expecting, I dunno, a bit of Big Daddy-style fun. Boo the baddie, cheer the goodie, all that stuff. Used to be that the most exciting wrestling got was Kendo Nagasaki getting his mask pulled off. Instead, they got treated to a rarely-seen-on-these shores “death match” that rapidly spiralled out of control. Children were screaming as blood-soaked wrestlers hit each other with everything that came to hand, including those long fluorescent light tubes. Glass and blood everywhere. One fella got out an electric hedge-trimmer. Posters advertised cheap family tickets so loads of people took their – now presumably scarred for life – kids. Now the council are … [Read more...] about ‘Keir Starmer said he will resign if he gets a Covid fine – but PM refuses to do so’
