One-Third Have Changed Fourth of July Plans Due to High Gas Prices
One-third of Americans have changed their Fourth of July plans due to high gas prices, an Emerson College Poll released Friday found. The survey, taken June 28-29 among 1,271 registered voters, found that 33 percent have actively changed their travel plans this holiday weekend due to consistently high gas prices. “Regarding airfare, 18% have changed plans because of issues with plane travel,” the survey found. The results come as gas prices remain high, standing at an average of $4.842 on Friday after reaching an all-time high of $5.016 on June 14. Even so, gas prices are still well over $2.40 higher than on former President Donald Trump’s last full day in office on January 19, 2021. At the time, the gas price average stood at $2.38. Not only that, but the cost of throwing a Fourth of July weekend cookout has jumped drastically, up 17 percent from last year, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF): Survey results showed the retail price for 2 pounds of … [Read more...] about One-Third Have Changed Fourth of July Plans Due to High Gas Prices
Gleeful Texas AG Closes His Entire State Office to Bask in Death of Roe
Of all the eye-popping responses to the Supreme Court’s bombshell decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s was among the most extreme. The ultra-conservative Paxton said he’d be celebrating the removal of women’s rights by shutting down every attorney general’s office from noon and making June 24 an annual holiday for his staff. Dubbing it “Sanctity of Life” day, he called the holiday a “memorial” to “almost 70 million babies who have been killed in the womb.” Paxton did not, notably, do the same when an 18-year-old killed 19 children and two teachers last month at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Elsewhere, anti-abortion proponents popped champagne bottles in front of the Supreme Court and crowed on Fox News about it being a “wonderful day.” The conservative-majority Supreme Court ruled Friday that the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 was wrong and Americans do not have the constitutional right to an … [Read more...] about Gleeful Texas AG Closes His Entire State Office to Bask in Death of Roe
Forty and sulking
O ne day, five years ago, when I was lost somewhere in my thirties, the writer in me woke up and demanded to be let out. “Unleash your inner child,” she said, and as someone prone to gullibility, I was elated. After all, the children and the husband were all grown up and well-trained (pun intended), and I had some free time in my hand after a decade of maintaining a sane house and mind. Now, after being a full-time writer for a while, I discovered the inner child has grown into a snarky, bratty woman and could be quite a handful. For starters, she would criticise everything I write, including the shopping list, recipes and to-do lists. On days when she was particularly riled up, she would call my stories names such as “pouched egg”, meaning half-baked, and medu vadai, implying the plot hole is as big as the story. “They are better off blinking as an icon on your desktop,” she would say. I believed her, mostly. Showing off There were days when I would override her and submit my … [Read more...] about Forty and sulking
Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo resigns from City Council seat
Embattled Texas Police Chief Pete Arredondo has resigned from his seat in the Uvalde City Council, roughly a month after being sworn in to the position . The Uvalde Leader-News was the first to report on Arredondo’s resignation plans early Saturday afternoon. Uvalde city leaders said they received his official letter of resignation late Saturday afternoon after learning the news from the local paper. "After much consideration, it is in the best interest of the community to step down as a member of the City Council for District 3 to minimize further distractions," Arredondo said in his letter. "The Mayor, the City Council, and the City Staff must continue to move forward to unite our community, once again." The news of his resignation comes after Arredondo became the central figure in a series of tactical mistakes, including the decision to avoid confronting an 18-year-old gunman, in responding to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 children and … [Read more...] about Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo resigns from City Council seat
Newsmax Rages Against Drunken, Crime-Filled, ‘Inner-City’ Juneteenth
Far-right cable channel Newsmax marked the federal holiday that commemorates the national emancipation of enslaved African Americans by railing against Juneteenth as nothing more than an excuse to take a day off so intoxicated city residents can get violent. In a series of primetime segments on Monday night, several white conservative male hosts took a break from fearmongering about drag queens “grooming” children in order to dog-whistle about the outbursts of violence over the weekend in order to paint Juneteenth with a broad brush. For instance, one host insisted the nation should expect Juneteenth to “usher in crime and violence into America’s inner cities” going forward. Leading off his program Rob Schmitt Tonight , anchor Rob Schmitt wondered aloud if Juneteenth is “going to be an annual day of violence” while new Newsmax host Greta Van Susteren handed off her show to him. “Juneteenth is now a federal holiday, thanks to Joe Biden, of course, and a lot of … [Read more...] about Newsmax Rages Against Drunken, Crime-Filled, ‘Inner-City’ Juneteenth

Here are some ideas on how to capture this unusual moment in the country’s history. STORY FORMS Short of polling, it’s generally impossible to take the pulse of a community. Insurance cover for more crops soon
A decision on bringing more agricultural crops under insurance cover will be taken soon, Minister for Agriculture P. Prasad said on Friday. At present, coverage is extended to 27 crops. Speaking after inaugurating the State-level Crop Insurance Day celebrations, Mr. Prasad said the government was taking efforts to extend insurance coverage to all farmers under the State Crop Insurance Scheme and the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana and the Weather-Based Crop Insurance Scheme. Insurance coverage offers solace to farmers who often find themselves at the mercy of natural calamities and climate change events. The government had sanctioned ₹30 crore to farmers under insurance schemes last month, Mr. Prasad said. Protecting agriculture and farmers is important for the welfare of future generations. In that sense, ‘Krishipath’ is more important that Agnipath, he said. Mr. Prasad said the Njangalum Krishiyilekku scheme, under which households are encouraged to take up farming, has … [Read more...] about Insurance cover for more crops soon
