Lacking vaccines, North Korea battles Covid-19 with antibiotics and home remedies

May 16, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

SEOUL, May 16 (Reuters): Standing tall in bright red hazmat suits, five North Korean health workers stride towards an ambulance to do battle with a Covid-19 outbreak that - in the presumed absence of vaccines - the country is using antibiotics and home remedies to treat. The isolated state is one of only two countries yet to begin a vaccination campaign and, until last week, had insisted it was COVID-free. Now it is mobilizing forces including the army and a public information campaign to combat what authorities have acknowledged is an "explosive" outbreak. In an interview on state television on Monday, Vice Minister of Public Health Kim Hyong Hun said the country had switched from a quarantine to a treatment system to handle the hundreds of thousands of suspected "fever" cases reported each day. The broadcaster showed footage of the hazmat team, and masked workers opening windows, cleaning desks and machines and spraying disinfectant. To treat Covid and its symptoms, state … [Read more...] about Lacking vaccines, North Korea battles Covid-19 with antibiotics and home remedies

United States Crosses Grim Milestone of 1 Million Covid-19 Deaths

May 16, 2022 by www.news18.com

The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 hit 1 million on Monday, a once-unimaginable figure that only hints at the multitudes of loved ones and friends staggered by grief and frustration. The confirmed number of dead is equivalent to a 9/11 attack every day for 336 days. It is roughly equal to how many Americans died in the Civil War and World War II combined. It’s as if Boston and Pittsburgh were wiped out. It is hard to imagine a million people plucked from this earth, said Jennifer Nuzzo, who leads a new pandemic center at the Brown University School of Public Health in Providence, Rhode Island. Its still happening and we are letting it happen. Some of those left behind say they cannot return to normal. They replay their loved ones' voicemail messages. Or watch old videos to see them dance. When other people say they are done with the virus, they bristle with anger or ache in silence. 'Normal.' I hate that word, said Julie Wallace, 55, of Elyria, Ohio, who lost her husband to … [Read more...] about United States Crosses Grim Milestone of 1 Million Covid-19 Deaths

Venomous snakes shut down COVID test center

May 4, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A snake-catching company had to be called to a COVID testing facility in Australia after multiple venomous snakes were found on the premises. The testing site in Sydney was temporarily closed while a snake expert arrived to remove the reptiles and later searched the area to make sure they were gone. The reptiles in question were red-bellied black snakes, a familiar species in eastern Australia. Sean Cade, the owner of the Australian Snake Catchers group that helped remove the snakes, told Australian news outlet 9News that staff first saw a "medium-sized snake" on Friday last week followed by a couple of baby snakes on Monday. He said the influx of snakes may have been caused partly by improved weather conditions. A video posted on the Australian Snake Catchers group's Facebook page via Cade showed one of the snakes being coaxed out from beneath a bin before Cade picks it up by the tail and holds a collection bag open for it. Cade told Newsweek the snake that was … [Read more...] about Venomous snakes shut down COVID test center

COVID-19 vaccination for adults: 16 districts in Karnatakaachieve 100% second-dose coverage

May 16, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Sixteen districts in Karnataka have achieved 100% second-dose coverage, while 14 have crossed 95% coverage as of Sunday. Overall, 99% of the adult population in Karnataka is now fully vaccinated. These 16 districts include Bengaluru Rural, Kodagu, Mandya, Hassan, Chickballapur, Kolar, and almost all north Karnataka districts. From 51% on November 16 last year, the second-dose coverage in the State shot up to cross 80% on January 6 this year. It took over a month to cover another 10% and cross 90% by February 10. Subsequently, the second-dose vaccination slowed down and touched 99% only on May 15. The first-dose coverage has stood at 102%, exceeding the target population of 4.89 crore. Officials said this is because the target population is only an estimate of the 2011 census. According to data from CoWIN and the State Health Department, the second-dose coverage in 16 districts is above the State average of 99%. While Kolar and Bidar have achieved 106% coverage, Gadag has … [Read more...] about COVID-19 vaccination for adults: 16 districts in Karnatakaachieve 100% second-dose coverage

Tillis: I made a mistake taking off mask inside White House

October 7, 2020 by www.independent.co.uk

North Carolina Republican Sen. Thom Tillis says he made a mistake by taking off his face mask indoors last month at a White House event. Many attendees — including Tillis and President Donald Trump — later tested positive for COVID-19. The senator, who has been a strong supporter of wearing masks in public, was wearing one outside at the White House Rose Garden on Sept. 26, when Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court. But photos showed him without one at an indoor reception later. “I have to admit that I let my guard down because we’d all been tested about two hours before the event,” Tillis told WRAL-TV in an interview Tuesday. “It’s just another experience that tells me, even when you think you’re in a safe setting, you should always wear a mask.” Tillis, who is running for reelection next month against Democrat Cal Cunningham, announced his positive test last Friday and has been quarantined at his North Carolina home. He had already … [Read more...] about Tillis: I made a mistake taking off mask inside White House

Summer Preview: Daisy Edgar-Jones takes on ‘Crawdads’

May 10, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Good things seem to happen to Daisy Edgar-Jones while she’s busy doing something else. Her breakout role as Marianne in the popular Hulu miniseries “Normal People" came about while she was on another production. She read the book in between takes and filmed her audition on set. Several years later, she was on that same set when she found out that she had a shot at starring in the big screen adaptation of Delia Owens’ “ Where the Crawdads Sing ” (in theaters July 15). “It was so wild to me that they were thinking of me for it,” Edgar-Jones said last week from London . “I think I was surprised to be in consideration considering the popularity of the book and just how important it was.” “Where the Crawdads Sing" is about a girl named Kya who grows up alone in the marshes of North Carolina after her family abandons her. The story follows Kya from her childhood in the 1950s to adulthood as she navigates romances, ostracization from the townspeople — which only … [Read more...] about Summer Preview: Daisy Edgar-Jones takes on ‘Crawdads’

Chicago curfew tightened after killing near ‘Bean’ sculpture

May 16, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 CHICAGO (AP) — A clamp-down on Chicago teens’ access to a popular downtown park and an earlier weekend curfew following the fatal shooting of a teenager in the tourist attraction has revived longstanding accusations that City Hall prioritized the city’s sparkling lakefront and downtown over West and South side neighborhoods where hundreds have been killed or hurt by gun violence. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, though, said the response was part of an effort to keep visitors and Chicagoans safe, including the city’s youth. Lightfoot ordered that minors would not be allowed in Millennium Park unless accompanied by an adult after 6 p.m. from Thursdays through Sundays. On Monday, Lightfoot said she also had moved up the city’s 11 p.m. weekend curfew to 10 p.m. “We need to make sure they are safe and importantly that our young people understand and … [Read more...] about Chicago curfew tightened after killing near ‘Bean’ sculpture
