Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 VATICAN CITY (AP) — A Vatican cardinal testified Wednesday that Pope Francis himself ordered the ouster of the Holy See’s auditor-general, turning the tables on a scandal that had sparked questions about the Vatican’s commitment to financial transparency and accountability. Cardinal Angelo Becciu opened a second day of questioning in the Vatican’s big financial fraud trial by saying Francis had recently authorized him to reveal the details of Libero Milone’s 2017 departure as the Vatican’s first auditor-general. He did so to clarify his previous testimony, during which he declined to respond to questions about Milone “out of love for the Holy Father.” The Vatican announced June 20, 2017 that Milone had resigned two years into his mandate, without providing details. His ouster, as well as the removal of PriceWaterHouseCoopers as Vatican auditors, had long been cited by Cardinal George … [Read more...] about Cardinal: Pope ordered auditor to resign over spying charge

Hardik Patel’s Resignation: Cong Says it is BJP’s Script, Calls Patidar Leader ‘Opportunist’
Soon after Hardik Patel quit the Congress on Wednesday, the opposition party alleged that the BJP has "lured" the Patidar leader by promising to get cases against him withdrawn and has "scripted" his resignation letter. Congress leader and party spokesperson Shaktisinh Gohil also launched a scathing attack on Patel, calling him "dishonest" and an "opportunist", and claimed that youth leaders who have switched to the BJP have been reduced to "zero". Patel, who gained prominence in 2015 after he led the agitation seeking reservation for the Patidar community and was made the Gujarat Congress working president in July 2020, has accused its top leadership of behaving as if they hated Gujarat and Gujaratis. In his resignation letter, he was also critical of the Congress' stance on the Ram temple in Ayodhya, revocation of Article 370 from Jammu and Kashmir and the implementation of GST. "Hardik Patel has not written anything and his resignation letter has clearly been dictated by the … [Read more...] about Hardik Patel’s Resignation: Cong Says it is BJP’s Script, Calls Patidar Leader ‘Opportunist’
Russian state TV finally admits Ukraine war is a failure and country is isolated
Russian state TV has finally admitted the Ukraine war is a failure and the country is globally isolated in a moment of shocking candour. Mikhail Khodaryonok, a retired Soviet colonel, has given a damning assessment on Russian state TV of Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine — indicating the Kremlin leader is failing with the whole world against them. In an astonishing tirade that lasts nearly five minutes, Khodaryonok told Russian state TV to stop taking "information tranquillisers" and rejected the idea that the Ukrainian army is becoming demoralised. BBC reporter Francis Scarr called it a moment of "extremely rare candour" in which the former air defence commander said Russia 's position on the world stage was in "full geopolitical isolation". He said that as much as Russia would hate to admit it, virtually the whole world is against them. Khodaryonok spoke about Russia saying it will not "put up with" Finland and Sweden’s bid to join the western NATO alliance. He said … [Read more...] about Russian state TV finally admits Ukraine war is a failure and country is isolated
‘Conversations With Friends’ cast on what show says about love—”It’s messy”
It's been a few days now since the hotly anticipated screen adaption of Sally Rooney's novel Conversations With Friends has hit screens. No, it isn't a follow-up to Normal People , which stormed screens in 2020 with its realistic depiction of young, intense, beautifully confusing love and from the get-go, it isn't supposed to be. Instead, Conversations With Friends is a slow burn in comparison, taking audiences on a different kind of ride of romance, fueled with awkwardness, where silence says a million words, illicit eye contact can get your heart racing and forbidden kisses and late-night rendezvous leave an indescribable state of ecstasy, lingering on your mind. You know, "the-impulse-to-be-available-to-you-all-of-the-time" kind of feeling (Nick Conway, 2022). The show also explores one of the many existential questions out there that life throws at us. It's one of the ones nobody really wants to confront or admit they are even thinking about. "Is it possible to love … [Read more...] about ‘Conversations With Friends’ cast on what show says about love—”It’s messy”
2020 Democrats Furious Over ‘Send Her Back’ Chants at Trump Rally
2020 Democrat White House hopefuls reacted angrily to chants of “send her back” targeting Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) at President Donald Trump’s Wednesday evening rally in Greenville, North Carolina. “It’s clear that Donald Trump is trying to divide us by race and gender. It’s immoral. Our children are listening,” former Vice President Joe Biden wrote on Twitter. “These members of Congress — children of immigrants, just like so many of us — are an example of exactly what makes America great.” “Four days ago, the President of the United States suggested that four elected members of Congress, all women of color, ought to “go back” to the countries “from which they came.” And every day since he has repeated this ugly, racist refrain,” the 2020 Democrat frontrunner added. We’ve heard it before throughout our history, but it has no place in America in 2019. It’s clear that Donald Trump is trying to divide us by race and gender. It’s immoral. Our children are listening. — Joe … [Read more...] about 2020 Democrats Furious Over ‘Send Her Back’ Chants at Trump Rally
ASEAN-US: On the same page, but not in the same boat on Indo-Pacific
Endy Bayuni (The Jakarta Post) Jakarta ● Thu, May 19, 2022 2022-05-19 02:17 0 02c2f042c5018a82e8094ec75262fb2f 1 Academia ASEAN,Joe-Biden,US,Kamala-Harris,summit,China,Indo-Pacific,outlook,strategy,South-China-Sea,Quad,investment Free The United States and ASEAN may have many things in common when it comes to the future of the Indo-Pacific, even on security issues, but they differ on how to deal with China. While Washington is trying to build alliances in the region to contain the rise of China, ASEAN has accepted China’s growing power and tries to include, rather than exclude, Beijing in the emerging regional architecture. There is one problem, though. China has not fully subscribed to the geographical definition of the Indo-Pacific region, suspecting that this framework is tailored to suit the US agenda. Besides, China does not have direct access to the Indian Ocean. But then, neither does the US for that matter, but this has not stopped it from … [Read more...] about ASEAN-US: On the same page, but not in the same boat on Indo-Pacific
Watch: Aussie PM Scott Morrison Crash-Tackles Kid in Soccer Match
Australia’s Prime Minister Scott Morrison is on the campaign trail ahead of national elections this Saturday, and like all politicians the conservative coalition leader is keen to impress. Russia “finding it difficult” in Ukraine, Chechen warlord admits
The leader of the Russian republic of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has told a Moscow audience that his country's forces are "finding it difficult" and are fighting a war "against NATO " in Ukraine. A fierce loyalist of Vladimir Putin , the leader of the Caucasus republic announced his forces had been deployed to the battlefield in Ukraine soon after the Russian president invaded on February 24. Since then, the purported military exploits of Kadyrov's troops, who are known as "Kadyrovites" have been a feature in the Chechen strongman's social media channels. At a filmed educational forum in Moscow, Kadyrov addressed Russia's faltering invasion of Ukraine, in which his militias have suffered heavy casualties. "We're fighting not against Ukraine, against Banderites—we're fighting against NATO," Kadyrov told the audience at the New Horizons event on Wednesday. He was referring to World War II Ukrainian nationalist leader Stepan Bandera, who has been implicated in collaboration … [Read more...] about Russia “finding it difficult” in Ukraine, Chechen warlord admits
Productive visit
The visit by Sri Lanka's President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, has reaffirmed the country's close ties with India and provided both sides the opportunity to signal a readiness to take the bilateral relationship to a new level. This was reflected in the joint statement by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and President Rajapaksa, and the host of agreements to strengthen and expand bilateral cooperation. It was the first time in a quarter century that New Delhi played host to a Sri Lankan head of state who arrived without the burden of a raging ethnic conflict back home. Mr. Rajapaksa, whose political stock following his presidential and parliamentary election triumphs is unmatched among leaders in the region, did not have to seek support for his government nor assistance in a devastating civil war. For three decades, the Tamil question, and unease with the way successive Sri Lankan governments handled it, dominated ties between the two neighbours. With the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam … [Read more...] about Productive visit
