Police in the Philippines arrested Maria Ressa, the CEO of the major online publication Rappler, and former Rappler reporter Reynaldo Santos, Jr., on Wednesday on charges of “cyber libel” for an article quoting a government intelligence report accusing a wealthy businessman of having ties to drug trafficking. Ressa became a target for the Philippine government under President Rodrigo Duterte early during his presidential tenure, which began in 2016, for Rappler’s critical coverage of his war on drugs and repeated calls for police to kill drug suspects without due process. In 2018, Time magazine named Ressa, along with several other journalists, its Persons of the Year for challenging strongmen governments.Rappler’s own coverage of Ressa’s arrest notes that she was arrested on Wednesday evening by members of federal law enforcement from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), who entered the publication’s offices in plain clothes to … [Read more...] about Philippines Arrests Time Person of the Year on ‘Cyber Libel’ Charges

This U.S. Marine probably isn’t a spy. Here’s why Russia is calling him one.
Americans, by now, are all too aware of the disinformation campaign Russian President Vladimir Putin mounted during the U.S. presidential election in 2016. A key question that remains, however, is to what extent the Trump campaign aided, abetted, or perhaps even conspired with Moscow in this effort. As we await the findings of that ongoing investigation, another Russian disinformation campaign appears to be unfolding before our eyes. First, the facts of the case, few of which are undisputed. What all parties acknowledge is that Russian … [Read more...] about This U.S. Marine probably isn’t a spy. Here’s why Russia is calling him one.
Trump: ‘Our News Media Is Indeed Enemy of the People’
President Donald Trump took to Twitter again Sunday to lament coverage of his administration and its fight against "fake news," calling much of the U.S. news media "indeed the enemy of the people." Looking back on the coverage of his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un, President Trump started a four-part tweetstorm, decrying he is in a non-win situation. There hasn’t been a missile or rocket fired in 9 months in North Korea, there have been no nuclear tests and we got back our hostages. Who knows how it will all turn out in the end, but why isn’t the Fake News talking about these wonderful facts? Because it is FAKE NEWS! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 15, 2018 Pointing toward Monday's meeting in Helsinki, Finland, with Russian President Vladimir Putin, President Trump said it would not matter what is accomplished, because he will ultimately "return to criticism it wasn't good enough." Heading to Helsinki, Finland – looking forward to meeting … [Read more...] about Trump: ‘Our News Media Is Indeed Enemy of the People’

Will 'the Trump Doctrine' work? 1 / 1 Back to Gallery When President Donald Trump announced his plans to back out of the Iran nuclear deal, The Washington Post's State Department reporter John Hudson had an immediate reaction: It was a classic Donald Trump move. "There was a lot of pomp and circumstance and fanfare," Hudson says on the "Can He Do That" podcast, "and at the end, he chose a very dramatic move that was really sort of outside the bounds of what we normally think of as America's role in foreign policy making." On this week's … [Read more...] about The president is backing out of the Iran nuclear deal. Will ‘the Trump Doctrine’ work?
