The four-story building collapsed late Monday night in the Kurla area of Mumbai. Reports in Pakistan’s newspapers, that a Pakistani court has convicted Sajid Majeed Mir , one of the men who planned the Mumbai 26/11 attacks , on terror financing charges, is welcome proof that the search for each of the masterminds must never be given up on. In the case of Mir, Pakistan’s security agencies had gone so far as to falsely declare him “dead”. He was reportedly sentenced to more than 15 years in jail and is serving his term in a Lahore jail. Mir, the LeT’s former deputy chief of “international operations” , has been wanted for his role in recruitment for the 26/11 attacks, being the handler for David Headley, who carried out the reconnaissance for the LeT during several visits to India, and for being in the Karachi “control room” during the Mumbai siege. The Gujarat High Court on Monday dismissed an application seeking anticipatory bail by Mumbai-based filmmaker Avinash Das, who was booked for sharing a photo of Union Home Minister Amit Shah with an arrested Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Jharkhand, and a painting allegedly insulting the national flag, on social media platforms. The court also rejected his submission to offer an “unconditional apology” while calling his social media posts “a mistake” as he did not intend to insult. Since prima facie it appears that the applicant had insulted the national flag, the court would be very circumspect of releasing the applicant at this stage, the High Court said in its order, while observing that the applicant had violated the provisions of the Prevention of Insults to the National Honour Act by circulating a painting showing a person wearing a dress made of the tricolour. Veteran actor Surendra Rajan, who is best known for her role in Munnabhai MBBS, has been stranded in Mumbai ever since the lockdown as he had come to the city to film a web-series. The actor has now received aid from Sonu Sood, who has been helping stranded people in Mumbai to reach their respective homes. Talking to DNA, the veteran actor said, "Sonu Sood’s work is amazing and I am surprised that a man is working like this. One cannot do this unless he has a tremendous will to help people from within. He is doing extraordinary work and people like Sonu Sood are rare." The actor also said that even though he is in touch with Sanjay Dutt, who has been like a son to him, he did not want to ask him for aid. The Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed the plea by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited of Adani challenging disqualification of its bid for upgrade of the container terminal in Navi Mumbai by the Board of Trustees of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M.S. Karnik rejected the plea as non-meritorious and directed the companies to pay ₹5 lakh to JNPA. Since Adani Ports has already submitted Rs 4.25 lakh with the tender to JNPA, it will deposit the remaining ₹75, 000. The Bench also refused Adani Ports’s request to maintain status quo and not open bids till it sought relief before the Supreme Court. As per the plea the said bidding process consisted of two stages, the first stage was a global invitation of ‘Request for Qualification’ (RFQ) seeking application from interested parties. At the China border It is worrisome that China is upgrading its defence equipment on its border with India (Page 1, “China upgraded firepower on LAC”, June 27). That these developments in terms of a military infrastructure build-up have been going on ever since the stand-off between India and China confirms the point that China has been planning meticulously in terms of a permanency. One wonders where the talks that have been held so far on disengagement and de-escalation are heading if China is working to a plan. Though India has expanded its military capabilities and augmented its border defence infrastructure, it should be alert to face any eventualities. D. Mir had been declared “dead” by Pakistani officials as recently as in December 2021, but was then arrested by the police on April 21, 2022, convicted on May 16, 2022, and sent to Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail to serve three consecutive sentences amounting to fifteen and a half years in prison.
