Keep up the pressure: On the conviction of a Mumbai attacks handler in Pakistan

June 27, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Reports in Pakistan’s newspapers, that a Pakistani court has convicted Sajid Majeed Mir , one of the men who planned the Mumbai 26/11 attacks , on terror financing charges, is welcome proof that the search for each of the masterminds must never be given up on. In the case of Mir, Pakistan’s security agencies had gone so far as to falsely declare him “dead”. He was reportedly sentenced to more than 15 years in jail and is serving his term in a Lahore jail. Mir, the LeT’s former deputy chief of “international operations” , has been wanted for his role in recruitment for the 26/11 attacks, being the handler for David Headley, who carried out the reconnaissance for the LeT during several visits to India, and for being in the Karachi “control room” during the Mumbai siege. Headley named Mir in his deposition to a U.S. court, after he was given a “plea bargain” by the U.S. government, as well as in depositions via video link for the 26/11 trial in India. Mir is also wanted for LeT … [Read more...] about Keep up the pressure: On the conviction of a Mumbai attacks handler in Pakistan

Gujarat HC rejects anticipatory bail of Mumbai-based filmmaker

June 27, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Gujarat High Court on Monday dismissed an application seeking anticipatory bail by Mumbai-based filmmaker Avinash Das, who was booked for sharing a photo of Union Home Minister Amit Shah with an arrested Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of Jharkhand, and a painting allegedly insulting the national flag, on social media platforms. The court also rejected his submission to offer an “unconditional apology” while calling his social media posts “a mistake” as he did not intend to insult. Since prima facie it appears that the applicant had insulted the national flag, the court would be very circumspect of releasing the applicant at this stage, the High Court said in its order, while observing that the applicant had violated the provisions of the Prevention of Insults to the National Honour Act by circulating a painting showing a person wearing a dress made of the tricolour. In his application, Mr. Das, through his lawyer, submitted that the old photo of the Home … [Read more...] about Gujarat HC rejects anticipatory bail of Mumbai-based filmmaker

Bombay HC dismisses Adani Ports plea challenging disqualification by JNPA

June 27, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed the plea by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited of Adani challenging disqualification of its bid for upgrade of the container terminal in Navi Mumbai by the Board of Trustees of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M.S. The Bench also refused Adani Ports’s request to maintain status quo and not open bids till it sought relief before the Supreme Court. As per the plea the said bidding process consisted of two stages, the first stage was a global invitation of ‘Request for Qualification’ (RFQ) seeking application from interested parties. Letters to the Editor — June 28, 2022

June 28, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

At the China border It is worrisome that China is upgrading its defence equipment on its border with India (Page 1, “China upgraded firepower on LAC”, June 27). That these developments in terms of a military infrastructure build-up have been going on ever since the stand-off between India and China confirms the point that China has been planning meticulously in terms of a permanency. One wonders where the talks that have been held so far on disengagement and de-escalation are heading if China is working to a plan. Though India has expanded its military capabilities and augmented its border defence infrastructure, it should be alert to face any eventualities. D. Sethuraman, Chennai If the report is true, it reveals the true intentions of Beijing. And if the shared interests of India and China are dominant in other spheres, it is not clear why no major headway has been made to de-escalate the situation on the border. Keeping the border issue alive will only lead to unintended … [Read more...] about Letters to the Editor — June 28, 2022

Among them is the rapidly-rising forward Vikram Partap Singh, who has 27 appearances for the Indian Arrows in the I-League to his name along with five goals, four of which came in the 2019-20 season. June 27, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Lashkar-e-Taiba deputy chief and 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks planner Sajid Mir was sentenced by a Pakistan anti-terrorism court in Lahore on terror-financing charges in May this year, in a speedy trial completed just three weeks after he was arrested, three days before a U.S.-Pakistan ministerial meeting and a month before the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) plenary that gave Pakistan a reprieve. Mir had been declared “dead” by Pakistani officials as recently as in December 2021, but was then arrested by the police on April 21, 2022, convicted on May 16, 2022, and sent to Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail to serve three consecutive sentences amounting to fifteen and a half years in prison. According to a report in Pakistan Geo News , officials said Mir was tried and convicted “quietly”, given the sensitivities around the case. The Ministry of External Affairs in India has not commented on the case, given that the arrest, conviction and sentencing have not been formally announced by … [Read more...] about 26/11 planner Sajid Mir was arrested and convicted within weeks

Ranji Trophy should be the main arena in Indian cricket

June 28, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Tears welled up in Chandrakant Pandit’s eyes. He was a happy man. The team he coaches had just won Indian cricket’s premier championship, the Ranji Trophy (June 22-26, played in Bengaluru). It was a first ever for Madhya Pradesh , one of the country’s biggest States and once upon a time home to the legendary C.K. Nayudu, India’s first Test captain, who played for Holkar, then based in Indore. Not many metres away was a teary-eyed Amol Muzumdar, Pandit’s comrade-in-arms when they had both played for Mumbai many years back. Muzumdar was crestfallen at the defeat of the once invincible Mumbai, the team he coaches and a team which from 1934 onwards has won the Ranji championship 41 times, a record which not many teams can even hope to aim for. Bearers of a fine legacy The streaming tears of joy of the victorious and the anguished cry of the vanquished  are a throwback to the times when the Ranji Trophy was Indian cricketers’ most keen sought prize. It was a gateway to greatness … [Read more...] about Ranji Trophy should be the main arena in Indian cricket

Election 2022: Abortion central in first post-Roe primaries

June 27, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 DENVER (AP) — The midterm primary season enters a new, more volatile phase on Tuesday as voters participate in the first elections since the U.S. Supreme Court's decision revoking a woman's constitutional right to an abortion jolted the nation's politics. In Colorado's Republican U.S. Senate primary, voters are choosing between businessman Joe O'Dea and state Rep. Ron Hanks. O'Dea is the rare Republican who supports most abortion rights while Hanks backs a ban on the procedure in all cases. Meanwhile, in the Republican race for governor in Illinois, Darren Bailey, a farmer endorsed by former President Donald Trump over the weekend, wants to end the state’s right to abortion except for instances in which the mother's life is in danger. He doesn't support exceptions for rape or incest. His opponent, Richard Irvin, the first Black mayor of Aurora, has said he would allow abortions in … [Read more...] about Election 2022: Abortion central in first post-Roe primaries
