Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates

June 25, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters

June 25, 2022 by www.news18.com

Police fired tear gas to disperse anti-abortion demonstrators from outside the Arizona Capitol Friday night, forcing lawmakers to huddle briefly in a basement inside the building as they rushed to complete their 2022 session. Thousands of protesters had gathered earlier on the Capitol grounds in Phoenix, divided into groups both supporting and condemning the US Supreme Courts decision overturning Roe v. Wade. SWAT team members with the Department of Public Safety fired tear gas from second floor of the old Capitol building to disperse protesters in the mall between the current House and Senate buildings. KPHO-TV reported the officers opened fire when several anti-abortion protesters started banging on glass doors of the Senate building. Authorities said there were no injuries or arrests. The incident sent Senate lawmakers into the basement for about 20 minutes, said Democratic Sen. Martin Quezada. Stinging tear gas wafted through the building afterward, forcing the Senate to … [Read more...] about US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters

Libyan government appeals for U.S. backing after ‘confusing’ message from Trump

June 6, 2019 by www.nbcnews.com

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump sent a "confusing" message to Libya when he recently praised a military strongman waging war on the country's internationally recognized government, the Libyan deputy prime minister told NBC News. Ahmed Omar Maiteeg said the president's phone call in April with Khalifa Haftar — a renegade general whose militia forces are pressing an offensive on the capital, Tripoli — and the White House statement that followed it took his government by surprise. "The phone call from Gen. Haftar to President Trump was confusing to us. Because we see the U.S. govt as a our main ally," Maiteeg said in an interview with NBC News. It was the first time Libya had encountered such a "confused message" from a country it counted on as a reliable partner, he said. But Maiteeg said he was hopeful that the United States would stick by the U.N.-recognized government and he came away encouraged from discussions with State Department officials during a U.S. visit … [Read more...] about Libyan government appeals for U.S. backing after ‘confusing’ message from Trump

Maharashtra political turmoil updates | June 25, 2022

June 25, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The national executive meeting of the Shiv Sena on Saturday passed six resolutions giving absolute rights to Maharashtra Chief Minister and party president Uddhav Thackeray to take action against the rebels to bring the revolt within party under control. The meeting was called in the wake of Sena MLA Eknath Shinde’s rebellion, which has not only destabilised the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the State but also poses a risk of the Thackerays losing control of the party. The executive meeting was meant to reaffirm Mr. Thackeray’s control on the party organisation as before. It also passed a resolution barring any other individual or group from using the name of late Balasaheb Thackeray, the founder of the Shiv Sena. The party executive however did not remove Mr. Shinde from the ‘leader’ position within the organisation and all rights have been given to Mr. Thackeray to decide on the same. It has written a letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) informing that the … [Read more...] about Maharashtra political turmoil updates | June 25, 2022

Loewe presents a dystopian future at Paris Fashion Week

June 25, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 15 PARIS (AP) — Loewe thrust Paris Fashion Week into a bleak and dystopian vision of the future on Saturday -- turning its runway into a dead space where nature and animal life only existed to be harnessed and exploited by humankind. A sanitized white wall descended onto a bare deck as models walked by robotically, bathed in misty white light. Here are some highlights of spring-summer 2023 menswear collections: LOEWE'S NATURE MORTE Models wore plates of television screens showing deep water fish in the ocean, and plasma screen visors beamed out growing chrysanthemums. The only place that grass grew in designer Jonathan Anderson’s fashion dystopia was literally out of shoes, where green blades quivered and flapped surreally as the automatons filed by. The British designer used the remarkable set and concept not … [Read more...] about Loewe presents a dystopian future at Paris Fashion Week

Libya players agree cease-fire amid warnings war may become ‘next Syria’

January 20, 2020 by www.nbcnews.com

BERLIN — International powers with conflicting interests in Libya’s civil war have called for a cease-fire and agreed to respect a much-violated arms embargo in an effort to end the country’s long-running conflict. The agreement comes after a warning that the conflict that has spiraled into a proxy war risks becoming the "next Syria." The agreement on Sunday came after about four hours of talks in Berlin where German Chancellor Angela Merkel hosted leaders of 11 countries, with Libya’s two main rival leaders also in the German capital but not at the main conference table. Merkel told reporters that powers had agreed that a tentative truce in Tripoli over the past week should be turned into a permanent ceasefire to allow a political process to take place. A special committee made up of five military officials from each side will monitor the truce, she said. Libya has sunk further into chaos since the 2011 ouster and killing of its longtime dictator, Moammar Gadhafi. … [Read more...] about Libya players agree cease-fire amid warnings war may become ‘next Syria’

Boris Johnson ‘planned to build £150,000 treehouse for son Wilf’ at Chequers

June 25, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

Boris Johnson planned to build a £150,000 treehouse for his son Wilf at Chequers, it has been reported. The prime minister and his wife Carrie wanted to build the treehouse during autumn 2020 but had to pull the plug after it raised security concerns. The treehouse's design included bulletproof glass but could be seen by the roadside, prompting police to warn the PM about the risks involved. There were discussions about having Lord Brownlow, a Tory donor ranked the 521st richest person in the UK last year, fund the project, with plans for the treehouse drawn up for the country retreat, it has been reported. Some No10 aides warned Mr Johnson against the project due to the cost and the matter of it being more expensive than some homes in many parts of the UK. Prime Minister Boris Johnson with Carrie, their son Wilfred and dog Dilyn “He was told it would look terrible,” a government source told The Times . The newspaper reports that it is unclear whether the Chequers … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson ‘planned to build £150,000 treehouse for son Wilf’ at Chequers

French lawmakers to propose bill inscribing abortion rights in constitution

June 25, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

PARIS — A group of lawmakers belonging to French President Emmanuel Macron’s party will propose a bill to inscribe abortion rights into the country’s constitution, according to the statement by two members of parliament on Saturday. The move comes after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a 50-year-old ruling and stripped women’s constitutional protections for abortion. The right to abortion in France is already inscribed in a 1975 law relating to the voluntary termination of pregnancy within the legal framework that decriminalized abortion. A constitutional law will cement abortion rights for future generations, said Marie-Pierre Rixain, a member of parliament and of Macron’s The Republic on the Move party. “What happened elsewhere must not happen in France,” Rixain said. The bill will include a provision that would make it “impossible to deprive a person of the right to voluntarily terminate a pregnancy,” according to the statement, released by two members of the … [Read more...] about French lawmakers to propose bill inscribing abortion rights in constitution
