Wheat prices surged to a new record high in European trading on Monday after India decided to ban exports of the commodity as a heatwave hit production. The price jumped to 435 euros (Rs 35,260) per tonne as the Euronext market opened, up from the previous record of 422 euros (Rs 34,180) reached on Friday. On the Chicago Board of Trade, just before trading opened the price of the SRW wheat futures contract hit $12.35 (Rs 961) a bushel, an increase of 4.9 per cent. Global wheat prices have soared 40 per cent on supply fears since Russia’s February invasion of agricultural powerhouse Ukraine, which previously accounted for 12 per cent of global exports. The spike, exacerbated by fertiliser shortages and poor harvests, has fuelled inflation globally and raised fears of famine and social unrest in poorer countries. India, the world’s second-largest wheat producer, said on Saturday that it was banning exports after its hottest March on record, with traders needing express government … [Read more...] about Wheat Prices Hit Record High in European Trading After India Bans Export Due to Scorching Heatwave

Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
The YouTube video starts with a popular British children's cartoon character, Peppa Pig , introducing herself and her family, but there are signs of trouble almost immediately. During the ninth second, Peppa's mother opens her mouth and shouts, "Smoke weed!" The video - a doctored version of a real Peppa episode - deteriorates from there. Over five minutes, there are explosions and racial and homophobic slurs, culminating with Peppa and her parents in dark sunglasses smoking marijuana as rapper Snoop Dogg dances nearby. Since it was uploaded in 2015, the altered video, which has no age restrictions, has been viewed more than 1.5 million times. After years of vowing to police inappropriate content, YouTube continues to deliver violent imagery, drug references, sexually-suggestive sequences and foul, racially-charged language in clips that reach children at a troubling pace, say researchers, parents and consumer groups. YouTube's recommendation algorithm, they say, … [Read more...] about Young children can easily see disturbing content on YouTube despite age restrictions
Oklahoma abortions set to be felonies after Governor Kevin Stitt signs bill
Performing an abortion will be a felony in Oklahoma once a bill signed into law Tuesday by Governor Kevin Stitt takes effect in August after it passed through the state House last week. The new law would put medical professionals who perform abortions at risk of being charged with a felony and possibly facing up to 10 years in prison and up to $100,000 in fines. The only exception provided in the bill is for abortions performed because the pregnancy threatens the life of the mother. Dozens of states have introduced or passed bills placing restrictions on abortion ahead of a highly anticipated Supreme Court ruling in a suit fighting a Mississippi abortion ban that some have warned could significantly alter or overturn the legal precedent set by Roe v. Wade in 1973. The new Oklahoma law has been condemned by reproductive rights groups and Democratic lawmakers, with White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki saying in a statement that the "unconstitutional attack on women's … [Read more...] about Oklahoma abortions set to be felonies after Governor Kevin Stitt signs bill
Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes
Israel advanced plans for the construction of more than 4,000 settler homes in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, a rights group said, a day after the military demolished homes in an area where hundreds of Palestinians face the threat of expulsion. It was a jolting illustration of Israel's policies in the territory it has occupied for nearly 55 years. Critics, including three major human rights groups, say those policies amount to apartheid, a charge Israel rejects as an attack on its very legitimacy. Hagit Ofran, an expert on the settlements at the anti-settlement watchdog group Peace Now, said a military planning body approved 4,427 housing units at a meeting on Thursday that she attended. Israeli officials did not respond to requests for comment. It's the biggest advancement of settlement projects since the Biden administration took office. The White House opposes settlement construction and views it as an obstacle to any eventual peace agreement with the … [Read more...] about Rights group: Israel approves over 4,000 new settler homes
Revenge porn victims could be granted anonymity in review of online abuse laws
Revenge porn victims could be granted anonymity as part of a review of the laws around online abuse. MPs and campaigners have been calling for victims to be protected from further harassment after the sharing of private or sexual images or videos of a person without their consent was made a criminal offence in 2015. Survivor Lena Chen previously told The Independent how she had to leave the US and change her name when she was harassed for years after her ex-boyfriend’s posted of intimate photos online. The Law Commission is to consider the case for granting revenge porn victims automatic anonymity, which is currently standard for sexual offences, as part of a wide-ranging review. The independent body will also look at whether current laws are sufficient to tackle the emerging offence of “cyberflashing ”, where victims are sent unsolicited sexual photos and “deepfake” pornography that sees victims’ faces added to explicit videos. Starbucks breaks silence on abortion issues, will pay employee travel costs
Starbucks on Monday became the latest major U.S. company to offer coverage for travel costs for employees seeking abortions out of state. The Seattle-based coffee giant follows the likes of Amazon , CitiGroup, Tesla , and Yelp, which have made similar pledges as numerous states work to roll back abortion rights or ban the practice outright. The coverage Starbucks plans to offer will be part of its benefits package for employees, and will therefore also be extended to dependents, according to U.S. News. "Regardless of what the Supreme Court ends up deciding, we will always ensure our partners have access to quality health care," Sara Kelly, Starbucks acting executive vice president of partner resources, said in a letter announcing the new coverage. In the letter, Kelly referred to the leaked Supreme Court opinion draft, written by Justice Samuel Alito , indicating that the court will soon overturn the landmark 1973 decision, Roe v. Wade , which guaranteed access to … [Read more...] about Starbucks breaks silence on abortion issues, will pay employee travel costs
Russian sneak attack on Sumy area fails, Putin forces lose Ukrainian ground
An attempt by Russian forces to conduct a sneak attack and cross into Ukraine's Sumy region on Monday failed, according to the head of the Sumy Regional State Administration. Dmytro Zhyvytskyi said Monday in a Telegram post that the attempt took place at about 7 a.m. local time. "The enemy opened fire on the border area of Shostka district with mortars, grenade launchers, machine guns and submachine guns," the translated post read. "Enemy sabotage and reconnaissance groups tried to enter the region under cover of fire. Border guards gave battle to the Russians, the same retreat beyond the state border." The reported failure to cross into Sumy is the latest indication of Russian losses and Ukrainian successes in the ongoing war, although they have not been addressed by Russian officials. Several reports issued last week by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a U.S. think tank that provides frequent updates on the war, said Russian President Vladimir Putin 's troops … [Read more...] about Russian sneak attack on Sumy area fails, Putin forces lose Ukrainian ground

Gab complains about “anti-white hate” after being called out for Pittsburgh shooting suspect’s anti-Semitic posts
Social media platform Gab lashed out Saturday after being called out for a raft of anti-Semitic messages that were posted by the alleged suspect behind a deadly shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh. Gab has long been criticized for allowing hate speech to fester on its site as white nationalists have increasingly been banned from other social media platforms. "Unlike Twitter, we take action against terrorists," the official Gab Twitter account tweeted in response to a question from a Buzzed News reporter about the social media platform's response to the Tree of Life Synagogue shooting suspect being named as Robert Bowers. The post continued: "Secondly, we are working with the FBI directly and they have our full cooperation to see to it that justice is served. Now tell us what you think about the anti-white hate tweeted by Buzzfeed employees constantly." The account then went on to tweet posts from Buzzed News reports it claimed represented "anti-white hate."
