Afghanistan can’t catch a break | Opinion

June 24, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Afghanistan is a land of beautiful mountains and ravines, humble people, and rich history. But it's also a land of hunger, war, and misery. The Afghan population, already suffering immensely from a hunger crisis, ineffectual Taliban governance and a lack of monetary resources after Western donors cut the country off after the U.S. troop withdrawal 10 months earlier, is now forced to contend with a freakish act of nature. This week, a magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck the eastern Afghan provinces of Khost and Paktika, destroying entire villages and killing entire families. The tremors could be felt as far away as India. At least 1,000 Afghans have died and tens of thousands will be rendered homeless in what has been described as the country's most powerful earthquake in 20 years . The Taliban government, more concerned with restricting the rights of women and stamping out dissent than providing services, is now confronting the biggest crisis since it swept back into power in … [Read more...] about Afghanistan can’t catch a break | Opinion

Tory says voters should back them as ‘people still trust GPs despite Harold Shipman’

June 16, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

The would-be Tory MP for Wakefield has urged people to vote Conservative because "we still trust GPs" after Harold Shipman killed 250 people. Nadeem Ahmed is bidding to replace Imran Ahmad Khan, the former Conservative MP who triggered a by-election in West Yorkshire after he was jailed for sexually assaulting a 15-year-old boy. The Tory candidate left people shocked, however, after he said the ex-MP was "one bad apple" before launching into a bizarre speech about Shipman. "It was the right thing to happen to him," Mr Ahmed told the Telegraph. "He's in prison, which is the right place. As a teacher, a father, and as a human being, what he did was wrong. "He's been convicted of that offence, and I cannot stand here and say that was right. It was absolutely disgusting. And the people of Wakefield know that he was one bad apple." Former Tory MP Imran Ahmad Khan outside Southwark Crown Court ( Image: Phil Harris) He added: "Harold Shipman committed suicide in … [Read more...] about Tory says voters should back them as ‘people still trust GPs despite Harold Shipman’

It Feels Like 1979 Again

June 25, 2022 by www.theatlantic.com

Everything seems to be falling apart. The Russians are occupying a neighboring state. A foreign crisis is causing spikes in the price of oil. Inflation is the worst it’s been in some 40 years. A Democratic president is facing the lowest approval ratings of his term and has openly admitted that he knows the public is in a foul mood. A virus is on the loose and making a lot of people sick. Even the music charts are a mess, a horrid stew of disco and wimp-rock hits. Wait. Disco? was at 30 percent approval , and, yes, an influenza epidemic broke out. Whether music is better now than at the end of the 1970s, I will leave to you. (I was not a fan of the charts in those days, but I will still take the Bee Gees over Harry Styles.) The parallels with 1979 and 1980 are conspicuous as we head into the homestretch before midterms and the election sprint to 2024. President Joe Biden’s supporters worry that he is no longer up to the job , and that his admission of the country’s mood … [Read more...] about It Feels Like 1979 Again
