Pfizer says tweaked COVID-19 shots boost omicron protection
Pfizer announced Saturday that tweaking its COVID-19 vaccine to better target the omicron variant is safe and works — just days before regulators debate whether to offer Americans updated booster shots this fall. The vaccines currently used in the U.S. still offer strong protection against severe COVID-19 disease and death -- especially if people have gotten a booster dose. But those vaccines target the original coronavirus strain and their effectiveness against any infection dropped markedly when the super-contagious omicron mutant emerged. Now with omicron’s even more transmissible relatives spreading widely, the Food and Drug Administration is considering ordering a recipe change for the vaccines made by both Pfizer and rival Moderna in hopes that modified boosters could better protect against another COVID-19 surge expected this fall and winter. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech studied two different ways of updating their shots -- targeting just omicron, or a … [Read more...] about Pfizer says tweaked COVID-19 shots boost omicron protection

Click here to read the full article. News of a forthcoming Marcus Mumford solo album began to leak out this past week, which countless radio stations and websites around the world immediately leaped to assume meant that old gang of his was breaking up. Mumford made it official on two counts — yes, his solo record is coming up, and no, Mumford and Sons are not splitting — and offered a first taste of the new project as he sat in with Brandi Carlile Friday at L.A.’s Greek Theater. During the encore portion of the first of Carlile’s two sold-out gigs at the Greek, the two sang a powerful, collaborative new ballad (the title of which was not announced) that Mumford said would be the closing track of his solo album, publicly confirming a heretofore secret project that has become widely speculated upon over the last week. ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic
Click here to read the full article. Does the phrase “That’s All Right, Mama” apply to the new “ Elvis ” movie… as in, “that’s all correct, ma’am”? No one is probably expecting that ; any practiced watcher of biopics knows virtually any example will take deep liberties with the facts for dramatic purposes. And maybe it’s a given that a director who puts hip-hop and hard rock on his period-film soundtracks, as Baz Luhrmann does, might favor effect over total verisimilitude. Still, “Elvis” is right on enough counts — literally or spiritually — that it’s worth trying to separate fact from fiction in the movie’s narrative of Elvis Presley (played by Austin Butler) and his nearly career-long manager, Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). There may be no one better to go to who can provide the truth on both Presley and “the Colonel,” in tandem, than the latter’s biographer, Alanna Nash. Nash, a veteran music journalist, published “The Colonel: The Extraordinary Story of Colonel … [Read more...] about ‘Elvis’ Fact or Fiction: Colonel Tom Parker Biographer on What’s Real and Not in Baz Luhrmann Biopic

Protests and celebrations as Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade: Live updates
Protests continued in cities across the country Saturday after the Supreme Court's decision to overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling that had guaranteed the right to abortion in the United States. As states began to enact abortion bans and clinics stopped offering the procedure, large crowds gathered in cities such as New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta, some jubilant, others dismayed at the decision that stripped away women’s constitutional right to abortion. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue. Key highlights: President Joe Biden called it a “sad day” for the U.S. and said it would be up to voters in November to select candidates who would protect a host of rights — not just abortion but also marriage equality and the right to contraception. Centrist Sens. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, suggested they were misled by Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch, two key votes in the decision to overturn Roe. ‘Train strikes remind me of great trips I once took – now travel is a constant trauma’
News of the train strikes made me think back to all the great trips I had by train. But that’s a long time ago. These days travel is difficult not just because of my mobility, but because so much is organised online. Friends tell me train tickets are to be bought or cancelled on their phones. I wouldn’t have a clue where to start. Buses are no better. Remember the days when we memorised the paper timetable, turned up at the bus stop, kept checking our watches and hoped for the best? Now passengers can track exactly where the bus is on their phone. But I can’t do that. I can check the weather, news and make FaceTime calls to my grandchildren on my iPad, but that’s it. Once again, old people like me who haven’t kept up to date with technology are left behind. My Happy Valleys! Wales is wonderful - they don't need to change a thing, Val says ( Image: Getty Images/EyeEm) Wales needs a rebrand says business leaders because it’s overlooked by tourists in favour of … [Read more...] about ‘Train strikes remind me of great trips I once took – now travel is a constant trauma’
Cancer Cells Spread More at Night, Says Study
Cancer cells are more likely to attack the healthy areas of the body during the night when the affected individual is asleep, a new study has suggested. Cancer cells go through a process called metastasis where they break away from the primary tumour and mingle in the bloodstream to affect other parts of the body. The study, published in Nature, was a collaborative effort of researchers at ETH Zurich, University of Basel, and the University Hospital Basel. It suggests that these cancer cells have a high activity in the blood stream when the affected person is asleep during the night. Conducted on breast cancer patients, the team of researchers found that the circulating tumour cells (CTCs) are significantly higher in number in the bloodstream during the night as compared to the day. “When the affected person is asleep, the tumour awakens,” summarised Nicola Aceto, professor at ETH Zurich, in a statement. The researchers included 30 female cancer patients and studied the activity of … [Read more...] about Cancer Cells Spread More at Night, Says Study
