Does Henry Kissinger have a point on Ukraine? | Opinion
Henry Kissinger is one of the most controversial public figures in the modern era. The former U.S. national security adviser and secretary of State evokes a range of strong emotions. Depending on who you ask, Kissinger is either the quintessential realist who orchestrated the split between Communist China and the Soviet Union or a war criminal who approved over 3,800 bombing raids in Cambodia. Kissinger, who turns 99 years old on May 27, has generated even more controversy for himself. Speaking at the Davos World Economic Forum this week, the former statesman had a piece of advice for the Ukrainian government: it's time to think about a diplomatic settlement to end the war, and that settlement will have to include territorial concessions to Russia. "Ideally, the dividing line should be a return to the status quo ante," Kissinger surmised , referring to the pre-war lines in which Russia controlled the Crimean Peninsula and approximately a third of territory in the Donbas. … [Read more...] about Does Henry Kissinger have a point on Ukraine? | Opinion
What Donald Trump has said about gun control as he heads to NRA convention

Tears over special needs puppy’s first steps in new backyard after adoption
A rescue dog with special needs named Bevo has gone viral for his emotional reaction to seeing his new backyard for the first time, after a couple adopted him from an animal shelter. In a video shared last Friday on Facebook by Stray Rescue of St. Louis, the animal shelter where Bevo was staying, he can be seen shedding tears of happiness as he tries to contain his happiness over his new home. Bevo, who according to a few comments further down the post suffers from cerebellar hypoplasia , a neurological condition which doesn't cause dogs any pain, but does cause them to be wobbly, has moved from the St. Louis shelter to his loving home in Atlanta with his new parents. According to data shared by Petpedia, there are 3,500 animal shelters in the US, and altogether there are about 14,000 shelters and rescue groups in the country. Same data shows that over six million animals every year enter shelters across the country, but the good news is that about 710,000 of them … [Read more...] about Tears over special needs puppy’s first steps in new backyard after adoption
UK weather forecast: Exact date temperature set to plummet – but 20C sunshine is on way
With the long Jubilee Weekend around the corner many are hoping for good weather but the Met Office have put a dampener on it by warning of uncertainty. Thursday June 2 and Friday June 4 have been designated official bank holidays meaning we'll get a glorious four consecutive days off. Although some forecasters are predicting the warmest weekend of the year so far, the Met Office are less optimistic. Although the Jubilee week will start off unsettled with temperatures plunging to around 14C on Sunday May 29 and showers across the country, a plume of warm air is expected to make its way up from the continent by Thursday. The Met Office hasn't ruled out rain over the Jubilee weekend ( Image: PA) The plume will bring warmer weather with it but also an increased chance of rain. By the weekend itself the best of any sunshine will be in the south and the west of the England. The Met Office emphasised the difficulty in making predictions this far ahead and have … [Read more...] about UK weather forecast: Exact date temperature set to plummet – but 20C sunshine is on way
Marysville-Pilchuck Gunman’s Father Sentenced to Prison
Updated | The father of Jaylen Fryberg, who killed four friends and himself at Marysville-Pilchuck High School in Washington state in October 2014, was sentenced Monday to 24 months in federal prison and three years of probation, according to local news outlets. A jury in federal court had found Ray Fryberg Jr. guilty on six counts of illegally owning guns, including the one Jaylen used in the school shooting. The sentence is less than the 33 months in prison and three years of supervised release that federal prosecutors had recommended. Each count carried a maximum sentence of fines and 10 years in prison. Families of Jaylen's victims attended the sentencing and prosecutors read statements some of them had written. Lincoln Beauregard, a lawyer for the victims' families, tells Newsweek , "They appreciate the work of the Department of Justice, they appreciate the process. Some of them said that yeah, more time would have been good, but the bigger concern was that Raymond Fryberg … [Read more...] about Marysville-Pilchuck Gunman’s Father Sentenced to Prison
The Playacting Over Masks Really Needed to End
Sign up for Tom’s newsletter, Peacefield, here. The U.S.-government mandate requiring mask wearing on transportation is now dead, and it was killed in the worst way possible. A judge deemed “not qualified” by the American Bar Association wrote a muddled decision that invalidated a regulation hated by the president who picked her, while overriding the authority of the executive branch and its expert advisers to make policy. And yet, Federal District Judge Kathryn Mizelle just did President Joe Biden a favor. She got him out from under a policy that served little purpose. His administration will challenge the Trump-appointed jurist’s ruling—and it should, not to reimpose the mandate, but to preserve the power of the executive branch to issue national health regulations when needed. But Biden should be glad, as the airlines clearly are, that the masking theater is over. Mask mandates were a stopgap, an emergency safety measure imposed by governments with few other options to … [Read more...] about The Playacting Over Masks Really Needed to End
