(AP) — Reproductive health providers on Monday asked a Florida judge to block a new 15 week abortion ban from taking effect this week, arguing that the state constitution guarantees access to the procedure. Planned Parenthood and other health centers are seeking a temporary emergency injunction to stop the law approved this year by Florida’s GOP-controlled legislature and Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis. It is set to go into effect Friday. Leon Circuit Judge John C. Cooper began hearing arguments in the case days after the U.S. Supreme Court ended federal protections for abortion by overturning the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision. Florida’s law would prohibit abortions after 15 weeks, with exceptions if the procedure is necessary to save a mother’s life, prevent serious injury or if the fetus has a fatal … [Read more...] about Florida judge hears arguments on state’s new abortion law

Unhealthy trend in emergency medicine
Illegitimate master’s courses in emergency medicine (MEM), run mostly by major corporate hospitals and doctors with unrecognised qualifications practising as Emergency Medicine (EM) specialists, have emerged as a major concern in the State. The Emergency Medicine Association (EMA), the organisation of specialists holding recognised degrees, has sought the intervention of the Indian Medical Association and the Travancore Cochin Medical Council (TCMC) to put an end to this trend. The EMA has provided the TCMC with a list of hospitals running the unrecognised MEM course as well as the names of 50-odd doctors holding unrecognised qualifications, yet practising as EM specialists, for action. There are only two EM courses in the country recognised by the Medical Council of India (MCI) – the MD Emergency Medicine (since 2009) and the DNB Emergency Medicine (since 2014) of the National Board of Examination (NBE). . The MCI, through public notices, has been warning since 2016 that none … [Read more...] about Unhealthy trend in emergency medicine
Post-Roe, exceptions to state abortion bans won’t be easy to acquire
With Roe v. Wade overturned , exceptions to abortion bans — such as in the case of rape or incest, or for a pregnant person’s safety — are expected to be the only avenue to getting abortions in many states. But meeting the qualifications for those asterisks to the bans can be complex and traumatizing, experts say. For starters, exceptions for rape and incest are uncommon. The Guttmacher Institute , a research organization that supports reproductive rights, anticipates 26 states certain or likely to ban abortion now that there are no federal protections. Among those 26 states, there are about 41 abortion bans total, with some states having more than one ban, it said. Just 10 of the 41 bans have exceptions for rape and incest. In the states that do have rape and incest exceptions, requirements vary. Many, such as Utah, require victims of sexual assault to file a police report. Given that more than 2 out of 3 sexual assaults go unreported, according to the Rape, Abuse … [Read more...] about Post-Roe, exceptions to state abortion bans won’t be easy to acquire
The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Just six weeks before the 2020 presidential election — game day for vote-counting bureaucrats — Tina Peters was so proud of her operation at the Mesa County clerk’s office that she invited a film crew in to show it off. There’s no chance of mishap here, she boasted. “The Russians can’t hack into and start casting votes for someone,” she said, as a few in the office chuckled. By May 2021, it was Ms. Peters, not the Russians, who had helped engineer an audacious breach of voting machines, according to an indictment charging her with seven felonies. Ms. Peters arranged to copy sensitive election software from county voting machines in an attempt to prove the 2020 presidential election was rigged, according to court records. Prosecutors said she committed identity theft and criminal impersonation, and violated the duties of her office in the process. Ms. Peters has pleaded not guilty. The strange tale of Tina Peters — a once-ordinary public servant … [Read more...] about The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
Simranjit Singh Mann’s win may boost ‘Akali politics’, hardliners
The victory of Simranjit Singh Mann , a known hardline Sikh leader and chief of the Shiromani Akali Dal-Amritsar (SAD-Amritsar), from Punjab’s Sangrur parliamentary constituency, may have far-reaching implications. Mr. Mann, who has time and again raised the bogey of ‘Khalistan’, the sovereign state for Sikhs, could by his unexpected win embolden radical elements and lead to a resurgence of the “Akali politics” in Punjab. Observers of the State’s politics and law and order fear this dangerous trend will be a tough challenge for the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which would have to take concrete steps to deal firmly with the emerging situation. Punjab went through a traumatic phase of militancy from the mid-1980s to early-1990s over the demand for Khalistan. The Khalistan movement has lost popular support but sporadic incidents that have taken place recently in Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh have re-ignited the debate over the movement’s revival. In May this year, Mr. … [Read more...] about Simranjit Singh Mann’s win may boost ‘Akali politics’, hardliners
North Korea works to prevent flood damages amid COVID crisis
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Koreans were working to protect crops and equipment from potential damage after days of heavy rainfall, state media said, as outside observers worry any flooding could aggravate the country’s economic hardships amid its COVID-19 outbreak. Summer floods in North Korea, one of the poorest countries in Asia, often cause serious damage to its agricultural and other sectors because of its troubled drainage and deforestation. Typhoons and torrential rains in 2020 were among the difficulties leader Kim Jong Un said had created “multiple crises” at home, along with strict pandemic-related restrictions and U.N. sanctions over his nuclear weapons program. North Korea’s weather authorities predicted this year’s rainy season would start in late June and issued alerts for torrential downpours in most of its regions from Monday through Wednesday. G-7 leaders confer with Zelensky, prepare new aid for Ukraine
Leading economic powers conferred by video link with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday as they underscored their commitment to Ukraine for the long haul with plans to pursue a price cap on Russian oil, raise tariffs on Russian goods and impose other new sanctions. In addition, the U.S. was preparing to announce the purchase of an advanced surface-to-air missile system for Kyiv to help Ukraine fight back against Vladimir Putin’s aggression. The new aid and efforts to exact punishment on Moscow from the Group of Seven leaders come as Zelenskyy has openly worried that the West has become fatigued by the cost of a war that is contributing to soaring energy costs and price hikes on essential goods around the globe. Leaders were finalizing the deal to seek a price cap during their three-day G-7 summit in the German Alps. The details of how a price cap would work, as well as its impact on the Russian economy, were to be resolved by the G-7 finance ministers in the coming … [Read more...] about G-7 leaders confer with Zelensky, prepare new aid for Ukraine
From higher to hire education
Higher education policy planners and regulators are busy giving shape to the digital university, which was announced in the 2022-23 Union Budget. Though still on the drawing board, the digital university is expected to offer any number, kind, and type of course without limits on intake, in a hybrid or ‘physical plus digital’ mode. It proclaims to provide equitable access to quality higher education and employability-enhancing skill development programmes to all. Recent developments In the interim, the University Grants Commission has relaxed the norms and standards for setting up open universities. In particular, land requirement has been reduced from 40 acres to just five acres. This is likely to open the floodgates for private open universities. Simultaneously, more universities are being enabled to offer courses in the distance, open and online mode, mostly in collaboration with EdTech startups and unicorns. Some have already outsourced the delivery of their courses to such … [Read more...] about From higher to hire education
Anti-abortion centers to grow, wield more influence post-Roe

But despite promising abortion information and free pregnancy testing, the facility in Charleston, West Virginia, is designed to steer women facing an unwanted pregnancy away from choosing an abortion. That will become much easier now that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that states like West Virginia can make abortion illegal. It's one of hundreds of so-called crisis pregnancy centers nationwide whose aim is to discourage women from seeking abortions. The facilities, which have been accused repeatedly of deceiving women about their true purpose, are expected to wield even more influence in states where the dwindling number of clinics are now canceling abortion appointments. Often religiously affiliated, the anti-abortion centers are not licensed medical facilities and do not … [Read more...] about Anti-abortion centers to grow, wield more influence post-Roe
