On July 28th, 2017, he was appointed to replace Reince Priebus as White House Chief of Staff, taking office on July 31st, 2017, shortly after Mr. Priebus had officially left his post. As Chief of Staff, Mr. Kelly is considered to be one of the most hardline conservative members of the administration on the issue of immigration, along with Senior Advisor Stephen Miller. “I spend more time with the President than anyone else and we have an incredibly candid and strong relationship,” Mr. Kelly said in a statement. Mr Kelly’s insult, confirmed to the Associated Press by the former official, came as his clashes with Mr Trump over policy and personnel grew louder and more frequent. The chief of staff, who has cast himself as safeguarding the public from the president, has also threatened to quit the White House on several occasions. Mr Kelly’s disparaging remark was first reported on Monday by NBC News. White House Chief of Staff John Kelly on Monday denied that he said President Donald Trump is an "idiot," calling an NBC News story "total BS."Kelly's statement came about 45 minutes after NBC News published a report that described a number of fights between Trump and his embattled chief of staff. The outlet reported that Kelly often tells senior aides that they have to save the president from himself and his impulses — and that Trump does not understand policy."He doesn't even understand what DACA is.
