Boris Johnson’s Rwanda showdown with Charles – as by-election danger mounts back home
Boris Johnson faces showdown talks with Prince Charles after his plan to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda sparked outrage. The pair are due to meet at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in the capital Kigali - where the Prime Minister’s jet touches down tomorrow to kick off an eight-day diplomatic whirlwind. The summit is a few miles from the hostel where asylum seekers were due to be forced from Britain under a £120m deal. Yet the shamed Prime Minister has no plan to visit the site, after the first removal flight was grounded by the European Court of Human Rights. It will be the first time the pair have met since explosive reports the Prince of Wales branded the policy “appalling”. Clarence House has not confirmed or denied the private comments, which also include that the heir was “more than disappointed”. Government sources expect the pair to have a one-on-one "side conversation" at the margins of the summit, their first since June 3. "They are due to … [Read more...] about Boris Johnson’s Rwanda showdown with Charles – as by-election danger mounts back home
The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — Just six weeks before the 2020 presidential election — game day for vote-counting bureaucrats — Tina Peters was so proud of her operation at the Mesa County clerk’s office that she invited a film crew in to show it off. There’s no chance of mishap here, she boasted. “The Russians can’t hack into and start casting votes for someone,” she said, as a few in the office chuckled. By May 2021, it was Ms. Peters, not the Russians, who had helped engineer an audacious breach of voting machines, according to an indictment charging her with seven felonies. Ms. Peters arranged to copy sensitive election software from county voting machines in an attempt to prove the 2020 presidential election was rigged, according to court records. Prosecutors said she committed identity theft and criminal impersonation, and violated the duties of her office in the process. Ms. Peters has pleaded not guilty. The strange tale of Tina Peters — a once-ordinary public servant … [Read more...] about The Strange Tale of Tina Peters
‘I just couldn’t be silent’: How American women decided the 2020 presidential race
ARCHBALD, Pa (Reuters) - Marygrace Vadala's 82-year-old mother had been a fan of President Donald Trump since his days hosting the reality TV show "The Apprentice." She enthusiastically voted for him in 2016. But in the first weeks of the coronavirus pandemic, as the two watched daily White House briefings, Vadala's mom - Grace Webber - voiced her first doubts. "Why isn't he listening to the medical experts?" Vadala, a 48-year-old home care nurse, recalled Webber asking. Weeks later, Webber landed in the hospital with a gastrointestinal bleed. She soon contracted the coronavirus, spending nearly a month on a ventilator. In May, Vadala, a devout Catholic, said goodbye to Webber over FaceTime, clutching her mother's rosary beads. Vadala, who lives in a suburb of Scranton, Pennsylvania, had been a Republican all her life. But she concluded Trump lacked the "integrity and trustworthiness and responsibility" she was raised to value, and she wanted him out. She became a prominent … [Read more...] about ‘I just couldn’t be silent’: How American women decided the 2020 presidential race
