1 million Americans have died of COVID-19. Data shows California’s role in the staggering toll

May 17, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

COVID-19 has officially claimed 1 million lives in the U.S., according to data from Johns Hopkins University. The disease has killed more than 30 out of every 10,000 people in the country since the pandemic began. Since March 2020, an average of nearly 1,250 people have officially died of COVID-19 in the U.S. every day. That count, which peaked in January 2021 with up to 4,400 deaths a day, has slowed down recently, with an average of 350 to 600 daily deaths in April and May, according to Johns Hopkins. While this death toll is staggering, it’s almost certainly a serious undercount. Many COVID-related deaths are not officially counted as COVID, so the actual number of deaths from the disease could be several hundred thousand higher, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. California, which has more people than any other state, has also had the most deaths: More than 90,000 Californians have died of COVID-19 as of early May, an average of about 113 … [Read more...] about 1 million Americans have died of COVID-19. One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion

May 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The U.S. has now reached the once unthinkable toll of 1 million deaths from COVID-19 . How could this happen in the wealthiest country in the world? In a word, because of poverty—and the policy choices that perpetuate it. Our task now is to make different choices. Americans across the country have suffered during this pandemic. But new research by the Poor People's Campaign strongly suggests the poor and low-income have suffered the most. Even controlling for vaccination rates, they found that COVID-19 death rates in poorer U.S. counties were nearly double those in wealthier counties. During the deadliest phases of the pandemic, it rose to five times as many. White Americans still make up the largest share of America's poor and those who've died from COVID-19. But Black, Hispanic and Indigenous Americans are significantly overrepresented in America's poorest counties, and COVID-19 casualty rates run significantly higher for many communities of color. Poor Americans are … [Read more...] about One million COVID-19 deaths is a searing indictment of inequality in America | Opinion

Woman pleads guilty in $1.2M COVID-19 fraud scheme

May 18, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A woman pleaded guilty Tuesday in federal court in Virginia to a $1.2 million scheme that defrauded COVID-19 pandemic relief programs using victims’ personal information that she obtained through her state government employment, a prosecutor said. U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber said court documents show that in one scheme, from May 2020 to August 2021, Sadie Mitchell, 30, of Midlothian, with help from a co-conspirator, defrauded the Virginia Employment Commission by filing at least 20 fraudulent unemployment applications using inmates' personal information. As an employee of the Virginia Motor Vehicle Dealer Board, Mitchell had access to a government database, officials said. The conspirators filed at least 30 fake applications in the names of other people whose personal information was obtained, in part, through Mitchell's database queries, officials said. Through this scheme, the conspirators collected approximately $1 million in Pandemic Unemployment Assistance … [Read more...] about Woman pleads guilty in $1.2M COVID-19 fraud scheme

COVID in California: Latest news as Bay Area cases climb

May 18, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

The rise in the number of new coronavirus infections and hospitalizations in the Bay Area continues unabated, driven by fast-moving subvariants. Those new cases are once again wreaking havoc on the Bay Area’s restaurants , as the surge collides with an industry staffing shortage. The U.S. officially marked 1 million COVID-related deaths , a figure that is almost certainly an undercount. Latest updates: COVID shut down some of S.F.’s coolest hidden public spaces. It’s time to open them back up, says John King Even before the pandemic, some of the coolest public spaces in downtown San Francisco were easy to miss — perched on tall buildings or tucked inside towers, off the map unless you were in the know. Then came COVID-19. Now, even though workers are returning to the city’s downtown core, some of the best public spaces remain off-limits. We’re still living in harrowing times, no question. But at some point before too long, the city will need to give an official prod to … [Read more...] about COVID in California: Latest news as Bay Area cases climb

Burberry sees outlook weighed on by China Covid lockdowns

May 18, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Burberry has reported a jump in annual earnings as sales rebounded, but said its outlook for the year ahead depends on lockdowns and a recovery in spending across China. The luxury fashion firm reported underlying operating profits of £523 million for the year to April 2, up from £396 million the previous year as like-for-like sales jumped 18%. On a reported basis, pre-tax profits lifted 4% to £511 million. But the group said comparable store sales growth slowed to 7% in its fourth quarter as Covid lockdowns in China, its biggest market, hit March trading. The group said: “Our outlook is dependent on the impact of Covid-19 and rate of recovery in consumer spending in mainland China. Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony Composer Apologises over School Bullying

July 17, 2021 by www.news18.com

A composer for the Tokyo Olympic opening ceremony has apologised after an outcry over old interviews in which he discussed bullying disabled schoolmates, the latest scandal for organisers. The outcry, just six days before the Games open, comes after the resignations of several key Tokyo 2020 officials in the run-up to the Olympics, including former chief Yoshiro Mori who stepped down over sexist comments. The latest furore involves the musician Keigo Oyamada, known as Cornelius, who is among the composers for the music for the opening ceremony. After his involvement in the music for the opening ceremony began to circulate online earlier this week, interviews from the mid-1990s reemerged in which he discussed, without apparent remorse, his bullying of schoolmates with handicaps. The bullying and his remarks sparked outrage online, and prompted Oyamada to issue a statement expressing “deep regret” about both his behaviour and his comments. “I apologise from the bottom of my … [Read more...] about Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony Composer Apologises over School Bullying
