India Inc’s Budget Wish List Takes a Lesson From Covid-19 With Rare Health Spending Demand

January 4, 2021 by www.news18.com

India has a dismal ratio of doctors and hospital beds, and the fragility of our healthcare infrastructure was amplified in 2020, when a global pandemic threatened to overwhelm our hospitals and medical centres. Covid-19, the gravest health threat in recent memory, has now pushed the country’s apex business chambers to also emphasise the need for hiking government health spend in the upcoming Union Budget for 2021-22. Typically, business chambers and India Inc send a wish list to the government for Budget each year, which includes some sectoral demands, suggestions on lowering the incidence of taxation on companies and individuals and for boosting infrastructure spending. Healthcare rarely finds a mention in such a wish list. But this year, things are different. The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (Ficci) and the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) have both sought a significant increase in the Centre’s budgetary allocation for healthcare, among other … [Read more...] about India Inc’s Budget Wish List Takes a Lesson From Covid-19 With Rare Health Spending Demand

United States Crosses Grim Milestone of 1 Million Covid-19 Deaths

May 16, 2022 by www.news18.com

The U.S. death toll from COVID-19 hit 1 million on Monday, a once-unimaginable figure that only hints at the multitudes of loved ones and friends staggered by grief and frustration. The confirmed number of dead is equivalent to a 9/11 attack every day for 336 days. It is roughly equal to how many Americans died in the Civil War and World War II combined. It’s as if Boston and Pittsburgh were wiped out. It is hard to imagine a million people plucked from this earth, said Jennifer Nuzzo, who leads a new pandemic center at the Brown University School of Public Health in Providence, Rhode Island. Its still happening and we are letting it happen. Some of those left behind say they cannot return to normal. They replay their loved ones' voicemail messages. Or watch old videos to see them dance. When other people say they are done with the virus, they bristle with anger or ache in silence. 'Normal.' I hate that word, said Julie Wallace, 55, of Elyria, Ohio, who lost her husband to … [Read more...] about United States Crosses Grim Milestone of 1 Million Covid-19 Deaths

May 16, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Sixteen districts in Karnataka have achieved 100% second-dose coverage, while 14 have crossed 95% coverage as of Sunday. Overall, 99% of the adult population in Karnataka is now fully vaccinated. These 16 districts include Bengaluru Rural, Kodagu, Mandya, Hassan, Chickballapur, Kolar, and almost all north Karnataka districts. From 51% on November 16 last year, the second-dose coverage in the State shot up to cross 80% on January 6 this year. It took over a month to cover another 10% and cross 90% by February 10. Subsequently, the second-dose vaccination slowed down and touched 99% only on May 15. The first-dose coverage has stood at 102%, exceeding the target population of 4.89 crore. Officials said this is because the target population is only an estimate of the 2011 census. According to data from CoWIN and the State Health Department, the second-dose coverage in 16 districts is above the State average of 99%. While Kolar and Bidar have achieved 106% coverage, Gadag has … [Read more...] about COVID-19 vaccination for adults: 16 districts in Karnatakaachieve 100% second-dose coverage

Her breakout role as Marianne in the popular Hulu miniseries “Normal People" came about while she was on another production. She read the book in between takes and filmed her audition on set. Several years later, she was on that same set when she found out that she had a shot at starring in the big screen adaptation of Delia Owens’ “ Where the Crawdads Sing ” (in theaters July 15). “It was so wild to me that they were thinking of me for it,” Edgar-Jones said last week from London . “I think I was surprised to be in consideration considering the popularity of the book and just how important it was.” “Where the Crawdads Sing" is about a girl named Kya who grows up alone in the marshes of North Carolina after her family abandons her. Mom switching baby formula escalates baby’s health issues

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Speaking about the strain put on them by the continuing baby formula shortage, one family said that switching to a new type of formula has caused their daughter health problems. Zaskiia Colon of El Cajon, California, spoke to CBS 8 about the problems she has faced trying to feed her 6-week-old daughter amid the formula shortage. She said that she, like many parents, has been driving around for hours, scouring the greater San Diego area for formula and often finding bare shelves. She also explained that she will not be able to switch her daughter, whose name she withheld for privacy reasons, to baby food until she is at least 4 months old. "I was just getting formula right now [prior to the interview]," Colon told CBS 8. "What am I supposed to do, I'm not producing enough milk." The situation got so severe for Colon that she attempted to give her daughter a different variety of baby formula than she was used to, swapping in Enfamil Gentlease Infant Formula Powder. This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 9 CHICAGO (AP) — A clamp-down on Chicago teens’ access to a popular downtown park and an earlier weekend curfew following the fatal shooting of a teenager in the tourist attraction has revived longstanding accusations that City Hall prioritized the city’s sparkling lakefront and downtown over West and South side neighborhoods where hundreds have been killed or hurt by gun violence. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, though, said the response was part of an effort to keep visitors and Chicagoans safe, including the city’s youth. Lightfoot ordered that minors would not be allowed in Millennium Park unless accompanied by an adult after 6 p.m. from Thursdays through Sundays. On Monday, Lightfoot said she also had moved up the city’s 11 p.m. weekend curfew to 10 p.m. “We need to make sure they are safe and importantly that our young people understand and … [Read more...] about Chicago curfew tightened after killing near ‘Bean’ sculpture
