GHANAIAN diplomat and former UN chief, Kofi Annan, has passed away aged 80. Here, we take a look at the incredible life of the Nobel Peace Prize winner. Who was Kofi Annan? Kofi Annan was born in Kumasi, Ghana, on April 8, 1938. He served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations from January 1997-December 2005, and was succeeded by Ban Ki-moon. In his earlier life, Annan read economics at Macalester College in Minnesota, before going on to study international relations at the Graduate Institute Geneva. Annan joined the UN in 1962, where he worked for the World Health Organisation in their Geneva office. In addition to his work for the United Nations, Annan was chairman of The Elders, an international organisation founded by Nelson Mandela.
