An anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has awarded over 15 years jail term in a terror-financing case to a main handler of deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks . “An anti-terrorism court in Lahore early this month had handed down over 15 years jail term to Sajid Majeed Mir, an activist of banned Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), on a terror-financing case,” a senior lawyer associated with terror financing cases of LeT and Jamaat-ud-Dawa leaders told PTI on Friday. The Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) of the Punjab Police, which often issues conviction of the suspects in such cases to the media, did not notify Mir’s conviction in a terror financing case. Besides, since it was an in-camera proceeding at jail, the media was not allowed. The lawyer further said convict Mir, who is in mid-40s, has been in the Kot Lakhpat jail since his arrest in this April. He said the court also imposed a fine of over Rs. 400,000 to the convict. Who is Khalifa Haftar, whose forces are attacking Tripoli, Libya?
Libya's latest upheaval comes at the hands of a mustachioed military strongman who lived in the U.S. for 20 years, has past links with the CIA, and recently spoke on the phone with President Donald Trump about their "shared vision" for the country. The North African nation has been divided, lawless and verging on becoming a failed state ever since NATO intervention, including American airstrikes, helped topple dictator Moammar Gadhafi in 2011. Two rival governments continue to claim power in a country destabilized by warring militias and Islamist fighters. Amid this chaos, experienced warlord Khalifa Haftar earlier this month launched an offensive on the capital, Tripoli, where the internationally recognized government is based. Rival factions battle house-to-house for control of Libya's capital April 29, 2019 00:55 It is the latest development in a bewilderingly complex crisis, where several groups are vying for control but with … [Read more...] about Who is Khalifa Haftar, whose forces are attacking Tripoli, Libya?

UN: Haiti police need immediate help amid surge in violence
A U.N. special envoy warned Thursday that Haiti’s police force needs immediate help to fight crime and violence, noting that gangs have grown so powerful they recently seized control of a local courthouse. Helen La Lime, the top U.N. official in Haiti, said insecurity is rapidly deteriorating in the country of more than 11 million people, with an average of almost seven kidnappings reported every day. In May alone, she said more than 200 killings and 198 abductions were reported. Those kidnappings included two busloads of children and three U.N. personnel and their dependents, with one local staff member killed in a crossfire between gangs, according to a U.N. Security Council report. “The pervasive and deepening sense of insecurity, exacerbated by the (Haitian National Police’s) seeming inability to address the situation and the manifest impunity with which criminal acts are being committed, is dangerously fraying the rule of law,” said La Lime, who spoke at a U.N. … [Read more...] about UN: Haiti police need immediate help amid surge in violence
Libyan government appeals for U.S. backing after ‘confusing’ message from Trump
WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump sent a "confusing" message to Libya when he recently praised a military strongman waging war on the country's internationally recognized government, the Libyan deputy prime minister told NBC News. Ahmed Omar Maiteeg said the president's phone call in April with Khalifa Haftar — a renegade general whose militia forces are pressing an offensive on the capital, Tripoli — and the White House statement that followed it took his government by surprise. "The phone call from Gen. Haftar to President Trump was confusing to us. Because we see the U.S. govt as a our main ally," Maiteeg said in an interview with NBC News. It was the first time Libya had encountered such a "confused message" from a country it counted on as a reliable partner, he said. But Maiteeg said he was hopeful that the United States would stick by the U.N.-recognized government and he came away encouraged from discussions with State Department officials during a U.S. visit … [Read more...] about Libyan government appeals for U.S. backing after ‘confusing’ message from Trump
ICC prosecutor seeks to resume Philippines probe on deadly drug war
The Hague, June 25, 2022 (AFP): The International Criminal Court's prosecutor Friday said he intends to resume his probe into the Philippine's deadly drug war, saying a request by Manila to defer the probe was unjustified. Karim Khan, the prosecutor at the Hague-based court, had suspended the ICC investigation in November 2021 after the Philippines said it would look into the allegations itself. The announcement comes days before outgoing President Rodrigo Duterte steps down after six years in power, characterised by his shoot-to-kill policy to rid the country of drugs. "I have concluded that the deferral requested by the Philippines is not warranted, and that the investigation should resume as quickly as possible," Khan said in a statement from The Hague. Khan said he had asked judges at the court for authorisation to restart the probe. "In short, the deferral of the ICC investigation requested by the Philippines is not justified," he added. The ICC authorised a full-blown … [Read more...] about ICC prosecutor seeks to resume Philippines probe on deadly drug war
