Sen. Dean Heller: GOP Made ‘Big Mistake’ By Taking Aim at Obamacare First

· August 7, 2018 ·

Republican legislators made a "big mistake" in targeting the Affordable Care Act for repeal as their first goal under the Donald Trump administration, said Rep. Dean Heller, R-Nev. "I don’t think we should have done it first. I think we should have done the economy first. We needed to get some wins. We should have done transportation and the economy first, and then done healthcare after. I think you would have seen a very different result on healthcare," Heller said, the Washington Examiner reported. "We jumped in with two feet and we were not ready. We weren’t ready, and the results were obvious. We did eliminate the (individual) mandate. We did get some of the taxes. I did push back and postpone the Cadillac tax and some of those issues, but we made the big mistake of trying to do that first and it was too heavy of a lift," Heller said. "It was a missed opportunity, without a doubt," the senator added. While Heller initially spoke out against two … [Read more...] about Sen. Backing Kavanaugh Could Hurt Nevada’s Sen. Dean Heller

· July 25, 2018 ·

Sen. Dean Heller's support of Brett Kavanaugh for Supreme Court could cost him reelection in Nevada this fall, Politico reports. That's because Heller is the only the GOP senator defending a seat in a state that Hillary Clinton won in the 2016 presidential election, and Democrats are working hard to push him out. "After failing to mobilize voters effectively around the GOP blockade of Merrick Garland two years ago, Democrats are determined to take advantage of their one chance to make a Republican pay for the party’s Supreme Court machinations," Politico's James Arkin and Burgess Everett write. Ilyse Hogue, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America who supports Heller's opponent, first-term Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen, told Politico the Supreme Court battle is helping to "supercharge" Rosen’s campaign. Democrats also tell Politico that Heller’s quick endorsement of Kavanaugh helps them portray him as a Trump yes-man. … [Read more...] about Backing Kavanaugh Could Hurt Nevada’s Sen. Dean Heller

Sen. Heller Faces Political Fight With GOPOver Nuclear Waste Repository

· May 2, 2018 ·

Sen. Dean Heller, R-Nev., is in a political fight with Republicans over a nuclear waste repository, which could provide Heller with an opportunity to show his independence to voters, The Hill reported. Heller is the only Republican senator running for reelection in the 2018 midterms in a state that 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton won, the report noted. The senator aims to show that he would stand up for his home state against reopening the nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, 90 miles outside Las Vegas. "Heller needs to show he’s been an effective senator," said political commentator John Ralston, The Hill reported. "The Yucca Mountain proposal poses significant health and safety risks and potentially catastrophic financial risks that must be addressed before — and not after — the proposal moves forward, should it move forward at all," Heller wrote in a letter to Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., and Sen. Dianne Feinstein, … [Read more...] about Sen. Heller Faces Political Fight With GOPOver Nuclear Waste Repository
