U.S. midterms bring few changes from social media companies
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Social media companies are offering few specifics as they share their plans for safeguarding the U.S. midterm elections. Platforms like Facebook and Twitter are generally staying the course from the 2020 voting season, which was marred by conspiracies and culminated in the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Video app TikTok, which has soared in popularity since the last election cycle while also cementing its place as a problem spot for misinformation, announced Wednesday it is launching an election center that will help people find voting locations and candidate information. The center will show up on videos about U.S. elections and in the feeds of users who search election-related hashtags. TikTok is also partnering with voting advocacy groups to provide specialized voting information for college students, people who are deaf, military members living overseas and those with past criminal convictions. TikTok, like other platforms, would not … [Read more...] about U.S. midterms bring few changes from social media companies
Musk tweet joking about buying Manchester United causes stir
LONDON (AP) — Elon Musk caused a stir by tweeting that he was buying the English soccer team Manchester United — whose current owners are opposed by many fans — then saying several hours later that it was a joke. It comes as the billionaire Tesla CEO faces a legal battle in the U.S. after backing out of a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion. He is a prolific user of the platform, often musing about social issues or joking with his 103 million followers and occasionally getting into trouble with U.S. regulators. Early Wednesday, Musk sent a tweet about his political affiliations and then added in a second tweet: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.” That came as shocking news in the Manchester United world — albeit welcome to many — after nearly a decade of sub-par performances. Asked by a follower whether he was serious, Musk later tweeted, “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams.” It wasn't Musk's first joke about buying a … [Read more...] about Musk tweet joking about buying Manchester United causes stir
Companies Should Lean Into the Great Rethink
The Great Rethink is a term being used to convey an alternate viewpoint to the Great Resignation. This alternative places an emphasis on the fact that many employees are taking a new look at their relationship with work. People are reexamining how their current job impacts both their career and their personal lives. This fresh assessment is guiding them to either stay where they are or look for a new job that better aligns with their priorities. With job openings at a record high, employers must also reevaluate their own relationships with workers if they want to attract and retain the talent they need. Three lessons we learned during the shift to remote work can help companies better navigate the Great Rethink. 1. Flexibility is key. During the shutdowns, the shift to remote work forced managers to change how they lead their teams and how work is done. It may have been rough at the beginning, but management styles adapted and technology stepped up to fill the gaps across the … [Read more...] about Companies Should Lean Into the Great Rethink

Everyone Knows Who the ‘Real CM’ Is: Aaditya Thackeray’s Dig at Shinde
In a searing attack on the Eknath Shinde-led government in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray on Wednesday said everyone knows who is the “real chief minister”, apparently alluding to the clout of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP in the new dispensation. Taking a dig at the cabinet expansion, Aaditya Thackeray said the ministerial team has neither heard Mumbai’s voice nor the voice of women or Independent MLAs. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde last week expanded his Cabinet, inducting nine MLAs each of the rebel Shiv Sena camp and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is supporting his government. No woman legislator or Independent was inducted in the Cabinet whose strength is now 20. The first 14 to 15 MLAs who aligned with Shinde when he revolted against the Shiv Sena leadership in June have not found a place in the Cabinet. So there is no place for loyalty, Aaditya Thackeray, a former minister, mocked while talking to reporters outside the state … [Read more...] about Everyone Knows Who the ‘Real CM’ Is: Aaditya Thackeray’s Dig at Shinde

Taiwan Shows Off Most Advanced Fighter Jet After China Drills
Taiwan displayed on Wednesday its most advanced fighter jet, the missile-equipped F-16V, in a rare nighttime demonstration in the wake of China’s unprecedented military drills around the island. Beijing staged days of air and sea drills in the Taiwan Strait this month after visits by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a congressional delegation to the self-ruled island territory. Taipei has carried out its own drills to simulate defence against invasion by China and on Wednesday air force personnel loaded an F-16V fighter with a US-made anti-ship missile in a “combat readiness” exercise at an airbase in eastern Hualien county. Six F-16Vs later took off for night reconnaissance and training missions, including two armed with missiles, according to Taiwan’s air force. “In the face of the threat from Chinese communist forces’ recent military exercises, we have stayed vigilant while establishing the concept of ‘battlefields everywhere and training anytime’… to ensure national … [Read more...] about Taiwan Shows Off Most Advanced Fighter Jet After China Drills
