Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday announced a 10% “super tax” on large-scale industries like cement, steel and automobiles, a move he said was aimed at tackling spiralling inflation and saving the cash-strapped country from going "bankrupt." High net worth individuals will also be subject to a "poverty alleviation tax," Mr. Sharif announced after chairing a meeting of his economic team on the federal budget for the next fiscal year 2022-23. “Our first motive is to provide relief to the masses and to reduce the burden of inflation on the people and facilitate them,” Mr. Sharif said in a video message to the nation. “Our second motive is to protect the country from going bankrupt," he said, adding that it has been devastated due to the "incompetency and corruption" of the previous Imran Khan-led government. The sectors on which this “super tax” will be levied include cement, steel, sugar, oil and gas, fertilisers, LNG terminals, textile, banking, automobile, … [Read more...] about Pakistan PM Sharif announces 10% ‘super tax’ on large-scale industries

Carried out by researchers at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health and Vanderbilt University Medical Centre, the new study looked at 3,070 healthy participants aged 18 to 30 who had their food and beverage intakes measured three times over a 20-year period to assess their intake of sugar-sweetened beverages (such as soft drinks, fruit drinks, energy drinks) and sugar added to foods (for example when cooking or in processed foods). After a 25-year follow-up, the participants also underwent CT scans to measure fat volumes in their abdomen and around the heart. The findings, published … [Read more...] about Eating too much sugar could lead to more fat being stored around the organs

For the study, nearly 2800 French people over the age of 65 were followed over a 12-year period, in order to identify factors likely to increase their risk of dementia. While genetic predisposition plays an important role in the onset of Alzheimer’s, environmental factors such as diet may also have an impact. The authors of the study published in Alzheimer’s and Dementia set out to explore how daily sugar consumption could affect the development of the disease. Previous studies in animals have … [Read more...] about Eating too much sugar could increase the risk of Alzheimer’s

Carried out by researchers at Lund University in Sweden, the new study looked at data gathered from two different study groups. One group had 1,797 participants aged 18 to 80years, who had their dietary intake assessed through a four-day food diary. Another had 12,238 participants aged 45 to 68years, who had their diet assessed using a combination of a seven-day food diary, a food frequency questionnaire and an interview. From this data, the researchers were able to look at the participants' intake of added sugar – sugar added to food and drinks during processing, not the sugar that exists naturally in fruit, vegetables or milk – and the average daily intake of nine micronutrients: … [Read more...] about Eating more sugar means eating less vitamins
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 29 HONOLULU (AP) — Megan Kau takes occasional weeklong hunting trips to the Hawaiian island of Lanai, where she enjoys watching the sunrise and hearing the distant rustle of deer and mouflon sheep in the tropical wilderness, a rifle ready at her side. As a gun owner, she also goes to shooting ranges several times a year. Those outings are the only times the attorney and Oahu native sees others with guns in this tourist mecca where strict laws make it harder to purchase firearms and restrict carrying loaded guns in public. Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning New York's concealed weapon law will likely change things in Hawaii, too, where it's now highly unusual to see people carrying loaded weapons in public. On the way into work early this morning I checked the headlines and felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. Millions of women will today be feeling the same. The ricochet of the overturning of Roe v Wade can be felt globally. For, on the surface of things, while this “only” appears to affect America, in truth it affects us all. The gradual dominance of conservative ideals in the US in recent years mirrors, in many ways, what can be already seen in so-called “modern” Britain: we are living through a time which is more focused on the crackdown on civil liberties than on protecting human rights ; where we can see, clear as day, the “othering” of disenfranchised communities through odious legislation such as the Nationality and Borders Bill . We have plans from our own government to send vulnerable refugees over to Rwanda , a failure to ban trans conversion therap y , the deliberate stoking of “culture wars” and straw man arguments used to perpetuate a … [Read more...] about What does the Roe v Wade Supreme Court ruling mean for British women?
The free food grain for poor scheme PM-GKAY should not be extended beyond September as it could strain government finances, the Expenditure Department has said. The Department also said the high food security cover has already "created a serious fiscal situation" and is not needed in non-pandemic times. In March, the government extended the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PM-GKAY) scheme for another six months i.e., till September 2022. The government has spent approximately ₹2.60 lakh crore till March and another ₹80,000 crore will be spent till September 2022, taking the total expenditure under PM-GKAY to nearly ₹3.40 lakh crore. The scheme covers nearly 80 crore beneficiaries. In its monthly report, the Department cited the adverse financial position of the Centre and said that recent decisions on continuation of PMGKAY, a huge increase in fertiliser subsidy burden (both urea and non-urea), re-introduction of subsidy on cooking gas, reduction of excise duty on … [Read more...] about Extending free food grain for poor scheme beyond September not advisable on fiscal ground: Expenditure Department
Inspired by fireflies, researchers from MIT have created insect-scale robots that can emit light while flying and enable motion tracking and communication. These robots weigh barely more than a paper clip, and they can be tracked using the light they emit and three smartphone cameras. Fireflies use their luminescence for communication — to attract a mate, ward off predators, or lure prey. Researchers have used the same concept to build these robots which are said to communicate with each other through the … [Read more...] about MIT researchers create firefly-like light emitting robots
The story so far: The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) said on Tuesday, May 17, that a sculpture of a lion , which possibly dates back to the Ganga dynasty, was found during excavation for the controversial heritage corridor project around the 12th century Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. This is the third such lion sculpture found during the excavation work. The East Ganga dynasty had ruled Kalinga, as Odisha was called in ancient times, from the early fifth century to the early 15th century. The Odisha government’s ambitious temple corridor project in Puri has become a subject of political controversy between Chief Minister Naveen Pattanaik’s Biju Janata Dal government and the opposition BJP and Congress. Three court proceedings are currently underway in the matter. On May 9, the ASI noted in a report submitted to the Orissa High Court that there was every possibility of archaeological remains at the heritage site being destroyed due to the excavation work for the … [Read more...] about Explained | What is the controversy around Odisha’s Jagannath temple Heritage Corridor Project?
