Why many Silicon Valley parents are raising their kids tech-free

· May 30, 2018 ·

In Silicon Valley, devices are an essential part of daily life. But many of the tech titans creating these products choose to power down when they leave the office, following industry giants like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs who restricted their own kids' access to technology at home. "Truth About Tech" campaign takes on tech addiction Pierre Laurent, who has worked for companies including Microsoft and Intel, said he and his family typically leave their phones at a table to charge when at home. He says the tech industry designs products to hook users, reports CBS News' Jamie Yuccas.  "I don't think the parents are aware of that. They don't see the consequences because nobody's told them, you know, there's no warning on the product," Laurent said. Pierre and his wife Monica became concerned that their three children would miss out on real-life experiences while on their devices so they decided to limit their screen time. Researchers are still learning more about how … [Read more...] about Why many Silicon Valley parents are raising their kids tech-free

The Days of the Vultures (Silicon Valley – Season 2 Finale)

· June 22, 2015 ·

This season’s finale of Silicon Valley provided Richard with only the briefest moment of victory before he once again faces losing Pied Piper.  First, the arbitrator rules that because Richard used a Hooli computer while developing Pied Piper, under the invention assignment provision of Richard’s employment agreement with Hooli, Hooli would have the right to Pied Piper’s technology.  However, because the employment agreement also contained unlawful non-compete provisions, the arbitrator held that the entire employment agreement was unenforceable, including the invention assignment portion.  Therefore, Hooli had no right to Pied Piper’s technology, and Richard won!  In the meantime, the Pied Piper team triumphs by successfully livestreaming the condor cam video to 200,000 viewers—including Laurie, the head of Raviga Capital.  Laurie is so impressed with the technology that once Hooli loses the arbitration, Raviga buys out … [Read more...] about The Days of the Vultures (Silicon Valley – Season 2 Finale)

Other Peoples’ (Adult) Content (Episode 15) of Silicon Valley

· June 1, 2015 ·

There are so many legal issues in Episode 15 of HBO's Silicon Valley that it’s hard to know where to begin, so I’m going to start at the end: porn.  Pied Piper is competing against nemesis Endframe for a $15 million contract from the online porn company Intersite.  If Pied Piper wins the contract it will allow Pied Piper to stay afloat and avoid being absorbed and obliterated by Endframe.Episode 15 was not explicit about the terms of the deal.  Does Pied Piper plan to license its technology for deployment on Intersite’s current platform, or is Pied Piper offering to host/store and serve Intersite’s content?  Based on Pied Piper’s website I assume that Pied Piper plans to compress, host and serve content provided by its regular users and its business customers—starting with Intersite’s pornographic content.  Are there any legal issues Pied Piper should consider before launching this business model and jumping into bed … [Read more...] about Other Peoples’ (Adult) Content (Episode 15) of Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley lawyer creates another social network for lawyers

· April 30, 2014 ·

Move over Avvo, JD Oasis, Legal OnRamp and WireLawyer, there’s a new kid in town: Foxwordy. This spring, Palo Alto, Calif.-based lawyer and entrepreneur Monica Zent debuted Foxwordy, her entry into the array of legal social networks.Zent acknowledges she’s entered a crowded field—and one that has not exactly yielded a track record of success—but believes the features of her legal social network will differentiate it from the rest. “It’s the first private social network,” Zent says. “Privacy is key.”Users must apply to the network and meet certain membership criteria before being accepted. Zent says the vetting process ensures that members are part of the legal community and not advertisers or vendors. The network combines offerings that are prevalent on other social networks, including discussion boards, private messaging, profiles, connections, document libraries and ratings. Members can use some of these features privately or … [Read more...] about Silicon Valley lawyer creates another social network for lawyers
