From kidnapping cats to demanding bridesmaids lose weight for the big day, it's shocking how far some couples will go for their dream wedding. One woman has caused outrage online after asking her sister with dwarfism to be the flower girl at her wedding. To make matters worse, she also asked her sister's partner, who also has the condition, to be the ring bearer. The story was shared by the women's other sister, Reddit user u/throwaway-account216, in a post to the r/TrueOffMyChest forum on June 22. The user explained that her "stupid and ignorant sister" saw no problem with the request, causing a rift in her family. "I wish I was kidding," she wrote. "We're all over 30, not kids. "Neither of them have developmental delays (my sister is a medical coder at a hospital and her boyfriend is an insurance underwriter). They are regular adults who happen to be under 4 feet tall." The sister and her partner were blind-sided by the request, as they believed they were being … [Read more...] about Bride asking sister with dwarfism to be flower girl slammed as “insulting”

India Signs Pact with UNWFP for Distribution of Aid in Afghanistan
India has signed a pact with the UN World Food Programme (UNWFP) for the distribution of the next batch of 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat in Afghanistan, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Thursday. India has already sent 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat to Afghanistan through Pakistani land routes. The aid was distributed by the UNWFP under the provision of an agreement that India had signed with the world body. The government of India and the UNWFP signed the second agreement for the donation of the next batch of 10,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the people of Afghanistan, the MEA said. The first agreement was signed in Rome in February. “In view of the deteriorating humanitarian situation and in response to the appeals made by the United Nations for humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, the government of India decided to gift 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat to the people of Afghanistan,” the MEA said in a statement. “As of now, the first tranche of 10,000 MTs of wheat has … [Read more...] about India Signs Pact with UNWFP for Distribution of Aid in Afghanistan

Running on empty: An eating disorder in disguise
"Being around food is intensely stressful for me. I think I hide it from my daughter pretty well, but I get anxious when she rejects food, or won't finish everything on her plate." At the UK's leading private rehab and addiction centre a group of women ranging in age from 34 to 76 are gathered to talk about the effect their eating disorders are having on their children. All are university-educated, with successful careers. Sophy, aged 42, is bringing up her three-year-old daughter alone. "I've had anorexia since the age of 20, and I'm terribly worried that she'll develop an eating disorder," she says. "I try to give her a balanced diet but I'm not the most imaginative when it comes to putting meals together. Also, I worry about her eating alone: most nights I just have some cottage cheese and a glass of red wine after she's gone to bed, but I don't really sit at the table as such. The problem is it's just the two of us ... it would be good if we could eat together, I know. At least … [Read more...] about Running on empty: An eating disorder in disguise
Food is Russia’s ‘silent weapon’ | Opinion
Four months into the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin has a say in what's for dinner in American homes. The United States doesn't get much food directly from Ukraine, but if your groceries cost 12 percent more this year than last , you can blame Russia's invasion for part of the increase. Why? In less than four months, Russia has inflicted damage to all aspects of Ukraine's agricultural infrastructure, including farms, roads, railroads, bridges, warehouses, silos, and ports. Ukraine has some of the most fertile land in Europe, was once called the breadbasket of the Soviet Union, and since the USSR's collapse, has been a top global exporter of wheat, maize, and sunflower oil. Russia has not only diminished Ukraine's export capacity, it has even blocked shipments from crossing the Black Sea entirely, which is likely to have dire consequences . Sanctions on Russia and Belarus, its ally, interrupt exports of food and fertilizer from these countries as well. The high cost of energy, … [Read more...] about Food is Russia’s ‘silent weapon’ | Opinion
Vladimir Putin’s war machine will see world become ‘hell on earth’ if not stopped
"Frightening" food shortages caused by Russia's blockade of Ukraine's port city of Odesa could lead to the break down of law and order in dozens of countries unless Vladimir Putin is stopped. David Beasley, who heads the UN World Food Programme, told a conference in Addis Ababa Thursday that "frightening" food shortages are looming. The official fears countries feeding their citizens on wheat exports from Ukraine and Russia will be hardest hit. Some of these nations are the world's poorest, including Somalia, Benin, Laos, Egypt and Sudan. Mr Beasley said: "Even before the Ukraine crisis , we were facing an unprecedented global food crisis because of Covid and fuel price increases. Vladimir Putin delivers a speech during a session of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum on Friday ( Image: REUTERS) “Then, we thought it couldn’t get any worse, but this war has been devastating.” He said now the current climate is a "very, very frightening … [Read more...] about Vladimir Putin’s war machine will see world become ‘hell on earth’ if not stopped
AP PHOTOS: A week of ruins and ruined lives in Ukraine
There is life amid the ruins in Ukraine , but there are so many ruins, and life is so fraught. In the course of the last week, Associated Press photographers captured images of a man peering upward through the hole in a roof of a hospital damaged during shelling in Donetsk; of another, his arms opened wide as he looks up at the wreckage of his Bakhmut home, damaged in Russian night shelling.; of boys playing in the shadow of a wrecked apartment building in Irpan. But there also are lives in ruins. An elderly woman, evacuated from the Lysychansk area, cries out just before departing by train for western Ukraine. Even as smiling young women wrap themselves in the Ukrainian flag or brandish bundles of cotton candy, even as Kyivans seek relief in comedy clubs, their country's soldiers deploy anti-tank mines to ward off Russian advances. And Russian soldiers sweep through Mariupol , the city in eastern Ukraine they conquered after reducing it to ruble. A war that … [Read more...] about AP PHOTOS: A week of ruins and ruined lives in Ukraine
Fake meat “less nutritious” than real thing, according to new research
Fake meat is less nutritious than the real thing, according to new research. Experiments found human cells take in fewer proteins from the vegan versions — because they are harder to absorb. The discovery could lead to the development of healthier products, ranging from faux fish fingers and faux ground meat or meatballs to "cheats" chicken. Corresponding author Professor Osvaldo Campanella, of The Ohio State University, said: "The ever growing population on Earth has increased the challenge of providing sufficient proteins from meat without compromising the ecosystem. "Additionally, concerns about food security and the awareness of a healthy diet have shifted the focus from traditional meat products toward plant protein-based meat analogues (MAs). "The latter contain abundant proteins and negligible saturated fat and cholesterol, contributing to a reduced occurrence of obesity and cardiovascular diseases. "Nevertheless, proteins from plants commonly display inferior … [Read more...] about Fake meat “less nutritious” than real thing, according to new research

Romania Route for Ukrainian Grain Struggles With Sheer Volume Moving
CONSTANTA, Romania (AP) – With Ukraine’s seaports blockaded or captured by Russian forces, neighboring Romania’s Black Sea port of Constanta has emerged as a main conduit for the war-torn country´s grain exports amid a growing world food crisis. It’s Romania’s biggest port, home to Europe’s fastest-loading grain terminal, and has processed nearly a million tons of grain from Ukraine – one of the world´s biggest exporters of wheat and corn – since the Feb. 24 invasion. But port operators say that maintaining, let alone increasing, the volume they handle could soon be impossible without concerted European Union support and investment. “If we want to keep helping Ukrainian farmers, we need help to increase our handling capacities,” said Dan Dolghin, director of cereal operations at the Black Sea port’s main Comvex operator. “No single operator can invest in infrastructure that will become redundant once the war ends,” he added.
