What to expect in the Supreme Court confirmation battle
WASHINGTON — The coming battle over a Supreme Court nominee promises to be a bruising one. Republicans are eager for conservatives to gain a firm majority on the court. Democrats are voicing alarm about what the new justice could mean for charged issues such as abortion rights and gay rights. The stakes are enormous, and advocacy groups that don't have to unveil their donors are spending heavily to shape the fight. President Donald Trump's top contenders for the vacancy appear to be federal appeals judges Amy Coney Barrett, Thomas Hardiman, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge. Trump planned to announce his pick Monday night. Regardless of his choice, it's likely that the closely divided Senate will be holding a momentous confirmation vote just weeks before the midterm election. SUBSCRIBE As President Donald Trump prepares for a high-stakes summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Tuesday, Americans are uncertain what to expect from the president’s attempts to make a deal, and less than a third of voters believe the ultimate outcome will be a positive one for the United States. According to the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll, about a quarter of voters — 26 percent — think that Trump will demand too much in the negotiations and thus scuttle an agreement. An additional 10 percent say Trump will give up too much. A combined 31 percent of voters are more optimistic, saying either that the ultimate agreement will be fair to both sides (17 percent) or that Trump will secure a deal that is better for the United States than for the North Korean regime (14 percent). The hearing, to discuss the agency’s budget for the coming year, will be the first opportunity for senators to ask Mr. Pruitt about his first-class travel, foreign trips organized by lobbyists, renting a $50-a-night condo from a lobbyist with business before the agency and other issues that have become the subject of 12 different federal investigations.
