Lauderdale, Florida, from complications following a stroke he suffered Monday. Reuters/Brendan McDermid The day Justice Antonin Scalia died, the deputy U.S. marshals charged with protecting him weren’t nearby, and they didn’t know his health was poor, according to the U.S. Supreme Court watchdog group Fix the Court. Thanks to a two-year-old Freedom of Information Act request, Fix the Court—which advocates for transparency at the high court—published 380 documents March 14 about the security measures in place for the justices. Those include a document outlining the U.S. Marshals Service policy for protecting the justices; information about the day of Scalia’s death; and information about July 2015 travel by several justices. Trial lawyer Hugo L. Black Jr., son of famous US Supreme Court justice, is dead at 91

Hugo L. Black Jr., a longtime trial lawyer and the son of a famous U.S. Supreme Court justice, died Monday at his Florida home. He was 91 years old.Still a practicing lawyer in Coral Gables, Fla., until shortly before his death, Black is survived by two daughters. He was predeceased by his wife and a namesake son who was also a lawyer, according to the Miami Herald.Known for his rapport with a jury and representing the underdog, Black was also a devoted family man, his law partner told the ABA Journal.“Juries loved Hugo,” said Bonnie J. Losak-Jimenez, who had practiced with him for over 20 years. Neil Gorsuch swears in youngest person to ever serve on Nebraska Supreme Court

LINCOLN — Jonathan Papik shared a story during his swearing-in ceremony Monday that shows how remaining grounded shouldn't pose a problem for the youngest person ever appointed to the Nebraska Supreme Court.The 36-year-old legal wunderkind from Omaha described how his young son, Bob, sounded a little anxious upon hearing U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil Gorsuch might come to the ceremony. It seems Bob was unsure whether he was ready to meet a judge.Papik informed the boy that his father was now a judge. Mitch McConnell doesn’t rule out confirming Supreme Court nominee in election year

In Sunday show appearances on CBS News' "Face the Nation" and Fox News' "Fox News Sunday," Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offered this explanation of his decision to keep Merrick Garland's Supreme Court nomination from being considered by the Senate:  "We simply followed the tradition in America, which is if you have a party of a different -- a different Senate of a different party than the president, you don't fill a vacancy created in the presidential year," he told "Fox News Sunday's" Chris Wallace. "That went all the way back to 1888." After Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died in February 2016, McConnell said: "The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, this vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president."
