How did the US successfully shoot down China’s ‘spy balloon’ with a single missile – and what was on it?

February 5, 2023 by news.sky.com

A US military operation to shoot down a Chinese "spy balloon" that had been hovering in American airspace came at a tense time for the two superpowers, whose relationship has been on rocky ground for years. But how did the US successfully down it with a single missile - and what intelligence are they now hoping to find in the wreckage? A vast underwater search is now taking place to find the remains of the balloon, which the United States is confident will show the Chinese were lying about its purpose above American airspace. China has previously said it was used for meteorological research and veered off course due to high winds, and with limited "self-steering capabilities" it was unable to right itself. Yet the Pentagon says the balloon, which was carrying sensors and surveillance equipment, was manoeuvrable and showed it could change course when it loitered over sensitive areas of Montana where nuclear warheads are siloed. The balloon was then seen … [Read more...] about How did the US successfully shoot down China’s ‘spy balloon’ with a single missile – and what was on it?

Delhi Mayor Polls: Who Are ‘Aldermen’ & Why Did Their Appointment Lead to AAP-BJP Clash? Explained

January 6, 2023 by www.news18.com

AAP and BJP councillors clashed on Friday over a dispute regarding BJP councillor and presiding officer Satya Sharma’s decision to administer the oath of 10 aldermen at the first meeting of the newly elected Municipal Corporation of Delhi House. The MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) House meeting was initially adjourned for an hour after four aldermen had taken their oaths. However, chaos ensued during the meeting soon after Sharma was administered the oath as presiding officer for the elections to the posts of MCD mayor and deputy mayor. After Sharma invited alderman Manoj Kumar to take oath, AAP MLAs and councillors began to protest against administering oaths to the alderman, and not the elected representatives, first. The BJP accused AAP councillors of throwing mics and chairs. According to PTI reports, AAP councillors raised slogans and stood on the tables, including those of the presiding officer. The MCD (Municipal Corporation of Delhi) House meeting was later announced … [Read more...] about Delhi Mayor Polls: Who Are ‘Aldermen’ & Why Did Their Appointment Lead to AAP-BJP Clash? Explained

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 Two weeks into the double murder trial of South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh, prosecutors haven't presented any direct evidence that he killed his wife and son at their home in June 2021. There is no confession, no surveillance camera footage, no recording of the victims' final moments. If found guilty of murdering his wife, Maggie, 52, and their son, Paul, 22, Murdaugh faces 30 years to life in prison without parole. The disgraced lawyer, who also faces about 100 other charges ranging from stealing money from clients to insurance fraud, has adamantly denied fatally shooting his wife and son. Murdaugh's lawyers said he was visiting his ailing mother on the night of the murders and police wrongly focused on him from the start, ignoring the possibility that anyone else killed them. Few Americans are excited about a Biden-Trump rematch, Post-ABC poll finds

February 5, 2023 by www.sfgate.com

WASHINGTON - President Biden and former president Donald Trump may have each drawn a record number of votes in 2020, but at this early stage in the 2024 election cycle, Americans show little enthusiasm for a rematch between the two well-known yet unpopular leaders, according to a Washington Post-ABC News poll. Neither Biden nor Trump generate broad excitement within their own party, and most Americans overall say they would feel dissatisfied or angry if either wins the general election. Biden, who has said he intends to seek reelection, has no current opposition for the Democratic nomination. Trump is likely to face at least several challengers in his bid to lead his party for a third consecutive election. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, the Post-ABC poll finds 58 percent say they would prefer someone other than Biden as their nominee in 2024 - almost double the 31 percent who support Biden. That is statistically unchanged since last September. Among … [Read more...] about Few Americans are excited about a Biden-Trump rematch, Post-ABC poll finds

However, she said that if she were to have another baby, she would “swallow my pride” and go on a longer maternity leave . Speaking to The Mirror , Madeley, 35, said: “James obviously makes a great income and he’s my partner and that’s fantastic, but we don’t have a joint account. “We’ve always had separate accounts and I think that’s a bit of a pride thing with me. Mayer – who, let’s not forget, is expecting twins – has announced she is going to take only two weeks’ maternity leave. The message from the trim and coiffed is that spending time with your newborn baby is for wimps – even if there are two to cope with. Real moms get their feet back under the desk almost before they stop all that unpleasant postpartum bleeding. Before Serena and her sister Venus became the superstars of the game in the late 90s, tennis was dominated by the white and the wealthy, typified by long-lasting rallies. However, with the arrival and reign of the Williams sisters, they morphed the sport into a more athletic, power driven game and showed the world that working class black girls could also be tennis champions. 20 years later, when you think of women’s tennis, Serena is the poster girl of the sport. Her magnificence on the court has earned her 23 Grand Slam championships – giving her the title of the most Grand Slam tournaments won in the Open era of women’s tennis. Last year January, shortly after winning her 23rd Grand Slam at the Australian Open, the 36-year-old put … [Read more...] about Serena Williams’ return to Wimbledon is no different from any other woman going back to work after maternity leave

Trump indictment will lead to “violent attack,” Kirschner predicts

February 5, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

Former President Donald Trump could launch a second "violent attack" if he's indicted in Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis' probe into his actions surrounding the 2020 presidential election, former federal prosecutor Glenn Kirschner warned Saturday. Willis is investigating whether or not Trump's call to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger , in which he allegedly asked him to "find" enough votes to tilt the election in his favor amid his efforts to try to overturn President Joe Biden 's win, violated state election interference laws. A special grand jury wrapped up its investigation last month. Willis is now tasked with reviewing the report and deciding whether to call a traditional grand jury, which would have the authority to issue an indictment against the former president. Kirschner said during an appearance on the The Dean Obeidallah Show on Saturday that indictments are "imminent in Georgia." However, he also warned that Trump may urge his … [Read more...] about Trump indictment will lead to “violent attack,” Kirschner predicts

Plea Seeking Review of Verdict on Demonetisation Filed in Supreme Court

February 5, 2023 by www.news18.com

A plea seeking a review of the judgement that upheld the Centre’s 2016 decision to demonetise Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 currency notes was filed in the Supreme Court on Sunday. A five-judge Constitution bench, in a 4:1 majority verdict, on January 2 had given its stamp of approval, saying the decision-making process was neither flawed nor hasty. The review plea was filed by lawyer ML Sharma, one of the 58 petitioners who had moved the top court challenging the demonetisation exercise announced on November 8, 2016. Sharma, in his review plea, contended that the bench did not consider his “written arguments” in its verdict on the batch of pleas which led to “serious injustice and miscarriage of justice”. “It is, therefore, most respectfully prayed that … may be pleased to: (i) Review the Judgment…,” it said. Observing that the scope of judicial review in matters of economic policy is ”narrower”, a five-judge Constitution bench headed by Justice S A Nazeer, since retired, had said … [Read more...] about Plea Seeking Review of Verdict on Demonetisation Filed in Supreme Court
