Furious Brits working 3 jobs blast out-of-touch minister as they share harrowing reality
Tory minister Rachel Maclean yesterday sparked fury in a car crash interview where she suggested Brits struggling for money should work more hours or get better paid jobs. As the cost of living continues to increase, putting more pressure on everyday people to pay for the bills, the “tone deaf” sentiments were slammed by Brits and the opposition party. Talking to Sky News, she said: “I think what we need to focus on now is over the long-term. “We do have these short-term pressures on us that we're all aware of. But over the long-term we need to have a plan to grow the economy and make sure that people are able to protect themselves better, whether that is by taking on more hours or moving to a better-paid job.” Rachel Maclean sparked fury in the Sky News interview on Monday ( Image: Sky) The Prime Minister's official spokesman waded into the row, adding the Home Office Minister was clear “people’s circumstances may vary”. We should be talking to our girls about periods earlier
Period. Time of the month. Menses. Whatever you call it, it’s a fact of life and, for many of us, unavoidable. Why does it carry such shame and embarrassment? Why are we encouraged to conceal it? Even now, despite being adults and amid so much talk of female empowerment, discussing periods is still embarrassing for a lot of people . Brands have even come up with whole campaigns to make tampons look like sweets, rather than the blood-soaking mechanism they actually are, in order to spare us and the unassuming male across the train aisle the humiliation when it falls out of our bag. Is this shame linked to the time and way in which we learn about periods ? If so, the time has come to change things. I was eight years old when I got my menarche (first period). I’d grown a lot that summer and started wearing glasses so, with two decades worth of retrospect, it now seems obvious this may have been coming – but no one told me what to expect. Instead, I was shocked by … [Read more...] about We should be talking to our girls about periods earlier
How to choose an investment product
Investors should follow a 3-step process before making the pick Should I invest in this this covered bond? Should I go for the small cap AIF that my relationship manager suggested? How about this secured bond sold on a new platform that delivers 11%? When confronted with these questions on newer products that float in the market, our question to our investors is — how many investment products do you really need? If you’re expecting that I put a number to this, saying 3, 5 or 10 products, that’s not what I am suggesting. It is simply knowing whether you need a particular product for your specific situation and your time frame of investing. This can be done in three steps. The three steps The first is to decide whether you need regular income from your investment or you need your money to grow, or if you simply want to preserve your capital. Second, if you fix some time frame for each of your requirements, it will further help filter products. For example, you could decide … [Read more...] about How to choose an investment product
RNC Chair McDaniel: Trump Is ‘Going to Be Critical’ to Help GOP Win in the Midterms
Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel said on this week’s broadcast of “Fox News Sunday” that former President Donald Trump was “critical” to the Republicans winning in the 2022 midterms. Partial transcript as follows: MCDANIEL: Oh, I’m not surprised that he got involved. Listen, the RNC stays neutral for a reason. We legally have to stay neutral, but it is helpful because we didn’t put our thumb on the scale and we get to bring everybody together after the fact and have a kumbaya moment. But President Trump is always going to get involved in primaries, as is other — as other candidates across the country. That’s just the nature of politics. MACCALLUM: All right. I just want to put this on the screen. Madison Cawthorn, obviously, has gotten a lot of attention in this race. He lost his bid to retain his House seat. The president kind of supported him, the former president, last minute in that race. But here’s what he just said, Madison Cawthorn: The time … [Read more...] about RNC Chair McDaniel: Trump Is ‘Going to Be Critical’ to Help GOP Win in the Midterms
California’s schools chief could cruise to a second term, despite criticism
SACRAMENTO — Prolonged classroom shutdowns. Pandemic policies that at times frustrated parents and teachers alike. Allegations of a toxic workplace. Questionable hiring practices. Despite it all, state Supt. of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond could end up coasting into reelection. “People are still angry, and they need to be heard. And I’m listening,” Thurmond said in an interview with The Times. “We’ve got a lot of big problems ahead of us, but I feel uniquely qualified to move our students forward, and I’m hopeful that the California voters will give me that opportunity to continue.” Six candidates have filed to run against Thurmond for a four-year term as the leader of California schools in the June 7 primary. But none have the political advantages — the name recognition, funding or endorsements — of the incumbent. Unlike other state offices, a candidate for superintendent can win the job in the primary, without an election in November, by getting a majority of the vote. … [Read more...] about California’s schools chief could cruise to a second term, despite criticism

A young boy who can't feel any pain due to an ultra-rare condition is now asking for help to save his legs. Kids’ Learning Losses Are Worse Than Educators Are Acknowledging
Starting in the spring of 2020, school boards and superintendents across the country faced a dreadful choice: Keep classrooms open and risk more COVID-19 deaths, or close schools and sacrifice children’s learning. In the name of safety, many districts shut down for long periods. But researchers are now learning that the closures came at a stiff price—a large decline in children’s achievement overall and a historic widening in achievement gaps by race and economic status. The achievement loss is far greater than most educators and parents seem to realize. The only question now is whether state and local governments will recognize the magnitude of the educational damage and make students whole. Adults are free to disagree about whether school closures were justified or a mistake. But either way, children should not be stuck with the bill for a public-health measure taken on everyone’s behalf. I am part of a team from the American Institutes for Research, Dartmouth College, Harvard, … [Read more...] about Kids’ Learning Losses Are Worse Than Educators Are Acknowledging
