Retired Lakeland officer raising money for Lake Morton Plaza’s displaced senior citizens
LAKELAND, Fla. — Lakeland senior citizens are out of a home and now out of food.It’s been nearly a week since a fire forced more than 100 seniors out a Lakeland assisted living facility.Still, residents haven’t been able to return to Lake Morton Plaza.Now, a retired Lakeland Police Officer is doing the best he can to help them.Alex Gomez, who recently retired, is now collecting gift cards to help replenish their groceries.“They explained to me they had to shut the power off, so a bunch of the residents lost their food,” Gomez said.A fire started on the roof of Lake Morton Plaza last week, and while flames never threatened residents, smoke did fill the entire building. Residents are being housed at sister assisted living facilities and/or their family’s homes. Two of the group members, who are programming the small robots to trace shapes and then recreate them on electronic tablets, are rising fifth-graders at Red Bank Elementary. Blackshear is an elderly resident of the Red Bank Life Care Center. Taylor and Calen have been visiting the center a few times a month during the school year, interacting with and learning alongside the rehabilitation and long-term care facility's residents. Hundreds of future citizens will be at polls in SoCal Election Day to help out non-English voters

She can’t vote, but the legal permanent resident can – and will – be a poll worker. Nguyen is among hundreds of legal non-citizen immigrants across Southern California gearing to volunteer on Election Day, June 5, thanks to a relatively new California law that allows those who hold so-called “green cards” to be poll workers. “I’m so excited and I’m curious to see what happens. I would like to see how voting works here in the States,” said Nguyen, a 46-year-old Westminster resident who’s first name is identical to her last. The 2013 law signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, Assembly Bill 817, was aimed at bringing more bilingual poll workers to assist voters who are not yet proficient in English.
