Who doesn’t get a sweet tooth, at least once in awhile, for a sweet onion? That thick slice of Rockies-purple red onion on a burger at Coors Field? Sweets cooked slowly and forever into a jam-like confit, sweeter than any that regular onions could make? It’s well-nigh impossible to think of a cuisine anywhere that doesn’t use onions, but sweet onions are special. (They also are a wee percentage of the world crop.) Many sweets sell in Colorado, such as Washington’s Walla Walla, Hawaii’s Maui, that Rockies-purple Red Bermuda or even our own state’s Colorado Sweet, available here most years August through October. But close to half of all the sweet onions that cooks buy in the United States come from Vidalia, Ga., and carry that name. Discovered accidentally (and felicitously) in the 1930s during the Great Depression, a Vidalia sports a whopping 12 percent sugar content versus a normal onion’s 5 percent. Too, the low sulfur content of the soil around the town of Vidalia contributes … [Read more...] about From cucumber salad to confit, three recipes to make the most of sweet onions

Piece of paper and metal foil is all you need to eavesdrop 6G transmissions
The new high-tech 6G wireless technology could be hacked in five minutes using a piece of office paper, an inkjet printer, a metallic foil transfer, and a laminator. The security flaw which would allow hackers to eavesdrop on 6G wireless signals was discovered by engineering researchers from Rice University and Brown University, who will present their findings and demonstrate the attack this week in San Antonio at ACM WiSec 2022, the Association for Computing Machinery's annual conference on security and privacy in wireless and mobile networks. Study co-author Edward Knightly, Rice's Sheafor-Lindsay professor of electrical and computer engineering, said: "Awareness of a future threat is the first step to counter that threat." "The frequencies that are vulnerable to this attack aren't in use yet, but they are coming and we need to be prepared." In the study, Knightly, Brown University engineering professor Daniel Mittleman and colleagues showed an attacker could easily make a … [Read more...] about Piece of paper and metal foil is all you need to eavesdrop 6G transmissions
Prince Andrew accuser says Jeffrey Epstein’s modelling agent pal raped her 50 times
Prince Andrew’s former sex accuser Virginia Giuffre told a court that a French model agency boss she was introduced to by Jeffrey Epstein raped her at least 50 times. Her claim has emerged as an investigation into the death in February this year of Jean-Luc Brunel in a Paris jail tries to disprove conspiracy theories that he was murdered. Ms Giuffre, 38, told French magistrates in November 2020 that Brunel had committed “no less than 50 non-consensual sex acts”, according to evidence outlined in the French newspaper Le Parisien yesterday. She told of one alleged attack in St Tropez in May 2001 after model Naomi Campbell’s 31st birthday party. Virginia Giuffre gave evidence ( Image: REUTERS) Recalling how Brunel would often rape her at the time, when she was aged 17, Ms Giuffre told the hearing: “The attacks did not stop on the pretext that we were on vacation. After the party, I think I had had a few glasses of champagne and it got sexual.” However, visa details … [Read more...] about Prince Andrew accuser says Jeffrey Epstein’s modelling agent pal raped her 50 times
Woman imprisoned for lying on resume, using photo of Kate Upton as LinkedIn profile to land job
An Australian woman was handed down a 25-month prison sentence Tuesday after authorities said she offered fake credentials on her resume, including using actress Kate Upton's photo instead of her own on a job site profile. Veronica Hilda Theriault is not eligible for parole for 12 months. According to ABC news, Theriault was convicted on charges of deception, dishonesty, and abuse of public office. She was employed by the Australian Department of Premier and Cabinet, a department within the Australian government, which assists the Prime Minister and Cabinet with policy coordination. Theriault's position came with a $270,000 yearly salary (About $180,000 USD). She was charged in September 2017. The Australian Broadcast Company also reported that Judge Michael Boylan said Theriault's CV, which included false information about her education and work experience, was showing that she could not be trusted with documents. Authorities said Theriault also lied about references to secure … [Read more...] about Woman imprisoned for lying on resume, using photo of Kate Upton as LinkedIn profile to land job
FDA clears COVID booster shot for healthy kids ages 5 to 11
U.S. regulators on Tuesday authorized a COVID-19 booster shot for healthy 5- to 11-year-olds, hoping an extra vaccine dose will enhance their protection as infections once again creep upward. Everyone 12 and older already was supposed to get one booster dose for the best protection against the newest coronavirus variants -- and some people, including those 50 and older, can choose a second booster. The Food and Drug Administration’s authorization now opens a third shot of Pfizer's vaccine to elementary-age kids, too — at least five months after their last dose. There is one more hurdle: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must decide whether to formally recommend the booster for this age group. The CDC’s scientific advisers are scheduled to meet on Thursday. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech make the only COVID-19 vaccine available for children of any age i n the U.S. Those ages 5 to 11 receive one-third of the dose given to everyone 12 and older. Whether … [Read more...] about FDA clears COVID booster shot for healthy kids ages 5 to 11
Jamie Oliver tells PM: ‘You’ve got 36 hours or we’re coming with Eton mess’
Jamie Oliver has threatened to stage an "Eton Mess" protest over the government's U-turn on its anti-obesity strategy. The celebrity chef has told the Prime Minister that he has "36 hours" to correct his mistake and called on the public to gather outside Downing Street on Friday at 12.30pm with bowls of dessert "invented in that very privileged place" where Boris Johnson went to school. The government has decided to delay a ban on two-for-one deals on unhealthy food , a move that has come under fire from campaigners including Oliver, who has called it a "wasted opportunity" that erodes the UK's efforts to tackle obesity. He added that a ban on junk food adverts on TV before the watershed was key to protecting children. The ban has been put on hold for a year. Advertisement "I would love to give you the opportunity if possible to realise that it's OK to make a mistake," he said in a video posted on Instagram. "What I'd like to say to you is … [Read more...] about Jamie Oliver tells PM: ‘You’ve got 36 hours or we’re coming with Eton mess’
A lesson from COVID-19: Growth is part of the problem | Opinion
This is a good week to ponder the dynamics of human population growth, and how it relates to the coronavirus pandemic, which is surging in the U.S. and globally, driven in part by population density. World Population Day, which highlights the importance of issues like family planning for sustainable development, is this Saturday. Meanwhile, this week the U.S. Supreme Court decided that the Trump administration could let employers opt out of mandated contraceptive coverage in the Affordable Care Act. Does the pandemic demand a rethink of our attitudes toward growth, both demographic and economic? Is perpetual growth really a guarantor of human well-being? Can we create by fiat an endless future of unlimited human numbers and activity? At what point should hubris make some concessions to humility? "We are as gods," Stewart Brand wrote in 1968 at the opening of his Whole Earth Catalogue , "and might as well get good at it." Half a century later, we are no better at it. The more … [Read more...] about A lesson from COVID-19: Growth is part of the problem | Opinion
Buffalo shooting: Seven of 10 killed in horrific mall massacre identified
Seven of the 10 people slaughtered by a white supremacist gunman at a US mall have been identified. Twisted teenager Payton Gendron yesterday scrawled the n-word on his rifle before carrying out a massacre at Tops Friendly store in Buffalo, New York. The vicious spree was uploaded on live-streaming platform Twitch where a horrific video showed Gendron mowing down his tragic victims. And in the hours after the attack, a vile 180-page manifesto detailing his absurd motive behind the shooting - in which 11 of the 13 shot were black - was released online. Buffalo Police officers hauled the 18-year-old racist conspiracy theorist into custody yesterday as the identities of his tragic victims began to emerge. Among them was 32-year-old Roberta Drury, who had rushed out to the nearby supermarket to fetch some groceries for her dinner. Dan Crenshaw got the last word on ‘SNL’: Pete Davidson roasted by Republican congressman
Republican Congressman Dan Crenshaw appeared on Saturday Night Live ( SNL ) Saturday to deliver live disses to comedian Pete Davidson after Davidson's comments on the Veteran's war injury. Crenshaw appeared on the SNL Weekend Update alongside Davidson, who invited the Congressman to make fun of a photo of Davidson, given the last week, Davidson had criticized a photo of Crenshaw. On the November 3 episode, Davidson commented Crenshaw's eyepatch makes him look like the "hitman in a porno movie." "You may be surprised to hear he's a congressional candidate from Texas and not a hitman in a porno movie," Davidson said. "I'm sorry, I know he lost his eye in war, or whatever." Davidson apologized to Crenshaw on the Saturday show and noted he went too far by mocking his eyepatch. "On behalf of the show, and myself, I apologize," Davidson said. "I mean this from the bottom of my heart. It was a poor choice of words. The man is a war hero and he deserves all the respect in the … [Read more...] about Dan Crenshaw got the last word on ‘SNL’: Pete Davidson roasted by Republican congressman
Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access
One day after the draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe vs. Wade leaked, Pennsylvania Democrat Josh Shapiro declared that his bid to become governor was the only thing preventing Republicans from restricting abortion access in the state. “The next governor is going to have a bill on their desk that will restrict or outlaw abortion rights, and they will have a decision as to whether to sign it or veto it,” he told reporters this month. “I will, of course, veto it. My opponents would sign it.” If the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision guaranteeing protection of abortion rights is overturned, abortion policy will be set by states, where Republicans hold the majority of legislatures and governorships. But in a handful of states, particularly Pennsylvania and Kansas, the winner of the November gubernatorial races could have a significant impact, vetoing or signing into law abortion legislation that would affect millions of people of reproductive age both in their … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access
