HAMZA AL-AJWEH/AFP/Getty World Syria Fake News It almost sounds like the beginning of a joke.A British priest, an American student and a Scottish baroness, among others, were stuck at a border crossing. But the border in question is no joking matter; it’s the one that divides Lebanon from Syria. Skeptical of what they’d seen and heard in the Western media, these men and women had arrived here to learn the “truth” about the then-six-year-old Syrian Civil War.This was last year, and the group was one of hundreds of tourist delegations that have tried to come to Syria, many with permission from the regime. Its organizer? Andrew Ashdown, an Anglican vicar from Winchester, a small town in southern England. Social Democrat MPs (L-R) Mathias Tesfaye, Nick Hækkerup, Nicolai Wammen, Henrik Sass Larsen and (C) leader Mette Frederiksen present the party's immigration plan. Photo: Mads Claus Rasmussen/Scanpix Denmark's Social Democrats, part of the left-wing opposition and the country's largest party, on Monday proposed slashing the number of "non-Western" foreigners allowed into the EU member state. "We want to introduce a cap on the number of non-Western foreigners who can come to Denmark," Social Democrats leader Mette Frederiksen said in a 44-page document which focused in particular on asylum seekers from Africa. "We want to reform our asylum system, among other things, by setting up reception centres outside Europe, and in the future it will not be possible for refugees to obtain asylum in Denmark outside quotas set by the United Nations," she added. The proposed reform would have asylum seekers who come "spontaneously" to Denmark sent to a reception centre in a country … [Read more...] about Denmark’s Social Democrats want to cap ‘non-Western’ asylum seekers
Russian president Vladimir Putin. Photo: Alexander Zemlianichenko/Pool/AFP Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday that the Catalan crisis was Spain's internal affair but slammed what he called Western double standards over separatist movements. "Russia's position is known here. All that is happening is Spain's internal business and must be resolved within Spanish law and on the basis of democratic traditions," Putin said at a meeting with international relations experts in the Black Sea city of Sochi. "What we see is that in our partners' view there are worthy fighters for independence and there are separatists who cannot defend their rights." "Such double standards -- this is a very striking example of double standards -- are fraught with serious danger … [Read more...] about Putin slams Western ‘double standards’ over Catalonia

Photo: Liselotte Sabroe/Scanpix In the span for just four years, the societal costs of non-Western immigration have increased by over two billion kroner, according to a new analysis. Since 2010, the social support costs of non-Western immigrants and their descendants have increased by over two billion kroner, while the same costs for ethnic Danes have decreased by eight million kroner, the think-tank and magazine Mandag Morgen has reported. The magazine also found that since 2008, the number of non-Western immigrants and their descendants receiving financial support from the state has risen by 35 percent. Government coalition partners the Social Liberals (Radikale), a traditionally pro-immigration party, said the numbers indicate that Denmark needs to start requiring more from immigrants. “We need to admit that there are too … [Read more...] about Cost of non-Western immigration on the rise
